In an attempt to keep the thread count down and hopefully preventing more mass deletions, well, we are gonna have to do more group threads.

So here goes, this thread is for any animation news, television, movies and anything else.

Seth MacFarlane Rebooting THE FLINTSTONES (http://collider.com/seth-macfarlane-flinstones-reboot/91167/)

FLINTSTONES! MEET ?THE FLINTSTONES? ON FOX

Modern Stone-Age Family Returns to Television in

New Animated Series from Seth MacFarlane,

20th Century Fox Television and Warner Bros. Television

Yabba dabba doo! FOX has picked up THE FLINTSTONES, a 21st century version of the classic animated comedy from executive producer Seth MacFarlane. In a cross-studio collaboration, THE FLINTSTONES will be produced jointly by 20th Century Fox Television and Warner Bros. Television. Warner Bros. is home to THE FLINTSTONES via its ownership of the Hanna-Barbera collection of animated titles. Dan Palladino (?Gilmore Girls?) and Kara Vallow (FAMILY GUY) will also serve as executive producers. THE FLINTSTONES will begin production in fall 2011 and will be set in stone on the FOX schedule in 2013.

?The very first cartoon character I drew at age two was Fred Flintstone,? said MacFarlane. ?So it?s appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who?s too good for him.?

?The Flintstones are among the funniest and most beloved characters in television history, and we can?t wait to introduce them to a whole new generation on FOX,? said Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. ?FOX has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air.?

The (pre)historic return of THE FLINTSTONES will feature MacFarlane?s modern-day take on the lives of the Flintstones and the Rubbles, two hard-working middle-class families living with contemporary conveniences in the dinosaur-era town of Bedrock. The series centers on hard-headed patriarch FRED FLINTSTONE and best friend and sidekick BARNEY RUBBLE. Fred?s Stone-Age clan includes wife WILMA, daughter PEBBLES and pet dinosaur DINO, while Barney?s brood consists of wife BETTY and son BAMM-BAMM.

MacFarlane?s lineup of animated series continues to dominate Sunday nights. Everyone?s favorite families from Quahog, Langley Falls and Stoolbend will be back for more laughs as FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD and THE CLEVELAND SHOW were recently renewed for a 10th, seventh and fourth seasons, respectively.

THE FLINTSTONES will be co-produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Warner Bros. Television. MacFarlane and Palladino serve as executive producers of the series and co-writers on the pilot. Vallow will serve as executive producer on the series. Voice actors for the series will be announced. THE FLINTSTONES and all related characters and elements are trademarks of ? Hanna-Barbera.

It isn't specified in the press release(that I could tell) but it extends to a possible film as well as a tv show. I don't know that the Flintstones needs to be touched, but it's in the best hands it could be in. McFarlane was an animator of Saturday morning cartoons before Family guy etc. and although his humor tends towards the blue I would imagine he has enough reverence for the original show that he will not turn it on it's head. We shall see.

Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their roles as Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan. In the original they were an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. When these two mismatched monsters met at school they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

In Kung Fu Panda 2, Po must now defeat a seething white peacock, Lord Shen (voiced with silvery menace by Gary Oldman), who owns a gigantic cannon he plans to use to put the Furious Five ? and, indeed, all of kung fu ? out of business. More than that, Po must come to grips with his own repressed memories of the moment that left him an abandoned infant. At times, Kung Fu Panda 2 suggests Bambi redone as an episode of Oprah. Yet it's a more-than-worthy sequel. You'll taste, and savor, the victory through an irresistible gush of ''healing'' tears. B+

KUNG FU PANDA 2 Review (http://collider.com/kung-fu-panda-2-review/93011/)

Kung Fu Panda 2 stands as a shining example of DreamWorks finally getting the sequel formula right. Building off of the success of the original 2008 hit, Panda 2 delivers more laughs, larger scale, finer animation, and arguably more heart. Jack Black returns as the incompetently powerful Po the panda to battle the next stage in warfare that threatens to make hand-to-hand combat extinct. Joined by the Furious Five, the group wages war amidst the beautiful landscape of China in thrilling sequences of 3D combat that highlight the evolution of the fighting in the first film. With newcomer Jennifer Yuh at the helm, backed by the returning talents of writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger along with the full voice cast, Kung Fu Panda 2 is the latest animated film to blur the lines between the admiration from adults and kids alike, and brings bang for your buck in 3D

"Kung Fu Panda 2" is exactly as you'd expect, and more. The animation is elegant, the story is much more involving than in the original, and there's boundless energy. I enjoyed it as fully as I possibly could, given the horror of its 3-D. The original film, in 2-D wide-screen, was just fine.

I may actually go see this before Hangover II...

Illumination Entertainment Acquires Film Rights to Uglydoll Franchise (http://collider.com/uglydoll-chris-meledandri-illumination-entertainment/93118/)

Chris Meledandri and his Illumination Entertainment banner have acquired the film rights for the cult plush doll line Uglydoll. The label responsible for films like Despicable Me and Hop will team up with Universal Pictures in bringing the line to the big screen. When discussing the acquisition with Deadline, Meledandri said of the Uglydoll franchise (created by the husband and wife team of David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim):

?I remember the immediate appeal and connection that the characters had for me. They are simple in design, expressive in personality, and once I got to know David and Sun-Min, I learned there was a mythology and a world behind this,? he said. ?The personality and level of wit reminded me of the illustrated work I saw from Matt Groening before he did The Simpsons.?

EMMYS: ‘Family Guy’ Pleads For Emmy Love – Deadline.com (http://www.deadline.com/2011/05/emmys-family-guy-makes-desperate-plea-for-emmy-love/)

For years, Family Guy producers had been asking for, sometimes even demanding, Academy votes in the show's Emmy mailers. They've now switched to begging. Following Stewie's turn as President Obama under the Vote For Change! slogan in the 2009 mailer and Peter Griffin's cover boy stint last year as the girl from Precious with the motto Vote For Us Or You're Racist, it's Stewie in the spotlight again. But gone is the cockiness, as the sad-looking prodigy is staring at the spider web-filled Family Guy trophy case.

Now in its ninth season, Family Guy has yet to win a best series Emmy. It was nominated four times for best animated series and once, in 2009, for best comedy series. That year, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane famously pulled the show from the animation field to go against its live-action brethren in the top comedy series category. It worked, as Family Guy in 2009 became the first animated series in 48 years to nab a best comedy series nomination. The previous series to accomplish that was none other than The Flintstones, the Hanna-Barbera classic that MacFarlane is rebooting for a 2013 launch.

After landing the landmark best comedy series nomination in 2009, Family Guy stirred controversy with the second phase of its Emmy campaign, which included staff writer Patrick Meighan breaking protocol by sending an email to TV Academy members begging them to vote for his show and the show producing six videos attacking its fellow best comedy series nominees. After coming up short last year with no best series nomination, the Family Guy team is trying a more subtle approach this year ... sort of. While going for the sympathy vote on the cover, the show is back to its trademark over-the-top self-deprecating sense of entitlement inside: "We paid for a Golden Globe and didn't get it, so we're owed an award."

Oh Hell anyone who denies Family Guy/Seth McFarlane'S influence on the TVlandscape is fooling themselves, sure, the Simpsons paved the way...but that way has been BLOWN UP by Family Guy and all that have followed. A minor ANIMATED show that Fox tossed all over the place, not unlike FUTURAMA...good tv finds an audience.

I will grudgingly admit the recent Yogi Bear did not look completely without merit

Warner Bros. Hires Writers for YOGI BEAR Sequel (http://collider.com/yogi-bear-2-movie-sequel/93267/)

Last December, Yogi Bear opened to just $16.7 million, a disappointing total for a family film during the holiday season. However, the CGI/live-action hybrid showed surprising legs, ending up with $100 million domestic and $200 million worldwide. According to Variety, Warner Bros. is encouraged enough to move forward on development for the sequel. The studio hired writing team Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia to script the project. Sternin and Ventimilia are two of the three screenwriters credited on the screenplay of the first movie (sorry, Brad Copeland) ? the duo recently wrote for the more critic-friendly Rio and are currently working on Peabody and Sherman for DreamWorks Animation.

Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voiced Yogi and Boo-Boo, respectively. Anna Faris, Tom Cavanaugh, Andrew Daly, and T.J. Miller starred in the live-action roles ? the report does not specify if there are any plans to bring them back for Yogi Bear 2.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Plot Details. (http://collider.com/how-to-train-your-dragon-2-details/94495/)

The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon has over three years to plan for its June 20, 2014 release. To match the heartwarming excellence of the original, DreamWorks Animation is going to enter into production right about? now. Writer/director Dean DeBlois spoke a the dedication of USC?s new Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Center for Animation recently, and informed the audience that several drafts of the script have been completed and the filmmakers have just begun the storyboarding process.

Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, and Gerard Butler are all set to reprise their roles from the first movie. Hit the jump for more on How to Train Your Dragon 2, including plot details and its place in a planned trilogy.

Heat Vision provides the synopsis:

?The story will move beyond the small, North Sea island that was the setting of the original film as it traces the further adventures of Hiccup as he grows toward becoming the leader of his Viking clan.?

DeBlois elaborated on his plans for the series as a whole:

?There are certain characters and situations that come into play in the second film that will becomes much more crucial to the story by the third. Other threads from the first will begin to pay themselves off in the second. It?s my way of guaranteeing that it is not another adventure that we throw the same five or six characters into, that it feels like part of a larger story.?

This sentiment echoes DeBlois? comments from February:

?We are treating How To Train Your Dragon as the first act in a much larger story. As we head into this one, the world expands. Everything is much bigger with still the heartfelt qualities that made the first one resonate so much with audiences. There are no longer restrictions to this tiny island in the North Sea. They have the entire Northern hemisphere within their grasp? The only way of tracing the story is to draw on elements that were in the first movie and set up elements for a third movie, so it doesn?t feel like a random adventure with the same five or six characters. This truly is a second chapter in a larger story.?

Haven't seen the first one yet...but I want to.

Mel Blanc to Voice New 3D LOONEY TUNES Shorts (http://collider.com/looney-tunes-shorts-mel-blanc/95550/)

THE LOONEY TUNES ? AND THE LEGENDARY MEL BLANC ? RETURN TO THE SILVER SCREEN, STARTING IN 2011

Warner Bros. Animation Announces Three New 3D Theatrical Cartoon Shorts

Two of the Original Films Feature Voice Recordings Made by Mel Blanc

ANNECY, France and BURBANK, Calif. (8 June 2011) ? ?Thufferin thuccotash!? Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Bird, Daffy Duck, Elmer

Fudd, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner will all return to theaters in three original Looney Tunes 3D theatrical cartoon shorts produced by Warner Bros. Animation and directed by Matthew O?Callaghan (Coyote Falls). Two of the new shorts ? Daffy?s Rhapsody and I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat ? will feature the voice of the late, great Mel Blanc. The legendary actor/comedian known as The Man of a Thousand Voices brought to life some of the most revered characters in animation history during a celebrated career spanning six decades. Blanc will appear in the shorts ? which are created using state-of-the-art CG animation and rendered in stereoscopic 3D ? via original songs he recorded in character in the 1950s.

The announcement was made today by Peter Roth, President, Warner Bros. Television, who oversees television animation for the Studio, and Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation (WBA). Register unveiled news of the three original shorts ? which also include an as-yet-untitled adventure featuring the Coyote and Road Runner ? during a presentation at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

?Everyone at Warner Bros. Animation grew up loving the Looney Tunes characters, and it has been both a great honor and an enormous challenge to continue the legacy of these animation icons and introduce them to a new generation of fans,? said Register. ?And to have the incomparable Mel Blanc voicing these characters once more is nothing short of a dream come true for all of us.?

Register added, ?This will probably be the last time that Looney Tunes fans will have an opportunity to see an original Mel Blanc short featuring these characters. We are honored to bring Mr. Blanc and his legacy to Looney Tunes fans once again.?
?Daffy?s Rhapsody: In the first of the new shorts, a persistent Elmer Fudd chases Daffy Duck (Blanc) on stage during a musical performance. The short features Blanc performing the song ?Daffy Duck?s Rhapsody.? Daffy?s Rhapsody is scheduled to debut in theaters on November 18, 2011, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Pictures? release of Happy Feet 2.
?I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat: A classic game of cat and bird transpires in Granny?s apartment as Tweety Bird goes to great lengths to avoid the clutches of his arch-nemesis Sylvester the Cat. The short also features the hit song of the same name, which was performed by Blanc, and sold over three million copies worldwide.
?Untitled Coyote & Road Runner: Wile E. Coyote?s epic quest to capture the Road Runner continues in this all-new short. Will the Coyote finally get his paws on his elusive prize?
?The three new shorts are all directed by Matthew O?Callaghan and executive produced by WBA?s Sam Register (The Looney Tunes Show, Teen Titans, Ben 10). The producers are Spike Brandt (The Looney Tunes Show, Duck Dodgers) and Tony Cervone (The Looney Tunes Show, Duck Dodgers).

The new theatrical shorts follow closely after the launch of The Looney Tunes Show, an all-new modern comedy series from Warner Bros. Animation which debuted in May and airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Cartoon Network. The animated sitcom finds Bugs and Daffy living together as unlikely roommates: Bugs is as brazen, sarcastic and ahead-of-the-game as ever, while Daffy ? despite his narcissistic, sociopathic and paranoid tendencies ? is Bugs? best friend and seemingly permanent houseguest.

MGM Animation Returns With ‘Punk Farm’ | /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/mgm-animation-returns-punk-farm/)

MGM: re-animate! There was a point where MGM was noted as an animation house that employed talents like Friz Freling and introduced William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. But the old MGM Cartoon Studio is long since shuttered, and the last theatrical feature to come out of MGM Animation was All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, in 1996.

Now MGM is going back to animation, and the first feature to be developed is one of the few non-remake projects at the studio: an adaptation of the children?s book Punk Farm.

Variety says that The Simpsons Movie director David Silverman will rewrite Jim Hecht?s script and then direct the project. The story, based on Jarrett Krosoczka?s book, is about ?five barnyard animals (Sheep, Pig, Chicken, Goat and Cow) who form an underground rock band.? The book got no small amount of acclaim, and a sequel (Punk Farm on Tour, in 2007). DreamWorks was once developing a film, but the rights passed to MGM at some point.

Joel Silver Developing a Live-Action BEN 10 Movie (http://collider.com/ben-10-movie-joel-silver/96261/)

Silver is not so quick to accept such high praise:

?I tried to do (something similar) with Speed Racer and failed miserably. You always learn more from the ones that don?t work than the ones that do work.?

I am a defender of that film, and continue to believe Speed Racer was a creative success. But yes, at the box office: total failure. That doesn?t mean they?re going out of their way to mitigate risk. Said Richards:

?We really see this as a large, big-budgeted tentpole movie.?

If the movie is based on the first series, it?ll look something like this:

When ten year old Ben Tennyson, his cousin Gwen, and their grandfather Max are on their summer camping trip, Ben finds an alien pod on the ground. When he examines it he finds a mysterious watch-like device called the Omnitrix. The device permanently attaches itself to his wrist giving him the ability to transform into a variety of alien life-forms each with its own unique powers. Ben soon realizes that he has a responsibility to use his abilities to help others. Along with Gwen and Grandpa Max, Ben embarks on a summer-long adventure to fight evil both extraterrestrial and terrestrial. [Wikipedia]

Personally, I LOVE Speed Racer, and wish I had seen it in IMAX. That movie is visual orgasm material.

‘Alois Nebel’ Trailer Rotoscopes Itself a Dark Thriller | Film School Rejects (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/alois-nebel-trailer-rotoscopes-itself-a-dark-thriller.php)

“The end of the eighties in the twentieth century. Alois Nebel works as a dis*patcher at the small railway station in B?l? Potok, a remote village on the Czech-Polish border. He’s a loner, who prefers old timetables to people, and he finds the loneliness of the station tranquil – except when the fog rolls in. Then he hallucinates, sees trains from the last hundred years pass through the station. They bring ghosts and shadows from the dark past of Central Eu*rope. Alois can’t get rid of these nightmares and eventually ends up in sanatorium.

In the sanatorium, he gets to know The Mute, a man carrying an old photograph who was arrested by the police after crossing the border. No one knows why he came to B?l? Potok or who he’s looking for, but it is his past that propels Alois on his journey…”

That’s the synopsis for the Czech film Alois Nebel (which you might need since the teaser isn’t in English). It promises a great story based off of the Jaroslav Rudiš and Jarom?r 99 graphic novels, but it’s the look and feel of the teaser trailer that sells it.

Why was “Cars 2” made? Well, for the money, of course. While the first film is one of Pixar’s underperformers when it comes to box office, it has made billions (with a capital bee) annually on merchandise and licensing and has become the centerpiece of a billion dollar (again, with a capital bee) expansion of Disney’s California Adventure theme park. In the years since the original film’s release, it’s become one of Disney’s most recognizable brands, with the sequel serving as an incredibly expensive commercial for bed sheets, Crocs, and matchbox toys. At one point, Mater actually sings the State Farm insurance jingle (yes, they’re one of the movie’s multitude of promotional partners) and that’s when the ungainly muddle of a movie really, truly became clear. Patton Oswalt 'Futurama' | Inside TV | EW.com (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/06/21/patton-oswalt-futurama-video/)

Patton Oswalt is no longer just a comedy giant in the figurative sense. The comedian is voicing an unsightly 50-foot-tall human-like alien ? call him ?Unattractive Giant Monster? ? that will wreak havoc all over ?Benderama,? an episode of Futurama that airs Thursday night on Comedy Central. (?Benderama? airs at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, after ?Neutopia? kicks off the animated comedy?s seventh season at 10 p.m.) The 35-word summary: The hot-headed UGM attacks the Futurama crew after Bender insults him. When he returns to apologize, he loses his cool, which ultimately leads to an epic showdown with a supersized Bender.

If you can?t wait until Thursday to see Oswalt in action, check out this clip in which UGM is insulted by Zap Brannigan before having one of his ?temper-control incidents.?

Herman And Katnip Coming To DVD For A Bit Of The Old Ultraviolence Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/21/herman-and-katnip-coming-to-dvd-for-a-bit-of-the-old-ultraviolence/)

Reputedly the inspiration for Itchy and Scratchy, the Tom & Jerry knock off Herman and Katnip is infamous for going rather too far with its comedy violence.

Indeed, I don?t think I?ve ever seen these toons at full throttle, because they were censored sometime after their premiere and have spent decades on TV in snipped-down form.

I assume that some cuts were also made to reign in the apparent racial stereotyping of Buzzy the crow.

Note: Arnold Stang, famously the voice of Top Cat, was previously on the other side of the eternal divide, essaying the role of Herman the mouse; Katnip?s voice was provided by Sid Raymond, who was also the man who quaked on behalf of Baby Huey, the diapered up duck of Harvey Comics.

Classic Media have today announced that they?ll be releasing a Herman and Katnip collection this September. So far, there?s no indication if the toons will be uncut or restored, but I wouldn?t hold my breath for too much ? the current Amazon price tag is short of $8.

With a run time of 60 minutes we can be sure that this won?t be a comprehensive collection either. Nonetheless, I have some hope that we?ll get at least a taste of the barbarism, surreal excess and blood thirsty lunacy to have inspired the cartoon charnel house that is Itchy and Scratchy.

REVIEW: Cars 2 Is All Chassis and No Soul | Movieline (http://www.movieline.com/2011/06/review-cars-2-is-all-chassis-and-no-soul.php)

The plot of Cars 2 is both overly convoluted and thin, and it folds in so much unvarnished toddler-instruction that it almost feels like an educational film. Little tykes will toddle home from Cars 2 with a solid grasp of the looming crisis we face if we don’t decrease our reliance on fossil fuel, and they’ll also know that it’s not nice to make fun of non-book-learnin’ types who talk funny.

Philip K. Dick‘s original story is about a Colorado gas station attendant who lets in some elves from the rain, ends up becoming their new king and, as a result, leads them in a war with Trolls.

Curiously, the new writer brought on to try and get the project working is Michael Markowitz, an experienced sitcom scribe who co-wrote Horrible Bosses. Way back when, however, Markowitz cut his toon teeth on the rather splendid Duckman.

$10/free for members

Never before in the history of animation have these two titans of cartoon comedy faced off ? just for laughs! Making his way into the ring: our resident animation historian Jerry Beck, who has collected a complete program of the rare 35mm and 16mm film prints that pit the two masters of cartoon mayhem against each other, with results that are hilarious. Tex Avery, the champion from Texas who created Droopy Dog and Red Hot Riding Hood, was the ?king of cartoons? with his series of MGM theatrical shorts of the ?40s and ?50s. These animated masterpieces practically invented the language of cartoons, and are rife with exploding bombs, eye-popping doubletakes and girl-hungry Hollywood wolves. Tonight?s challenger is Jay Ward, the prize-winning Bay Area producer who revolutionized TV toons in the ?60s with witty dialogue, funny artwork and zany characters like Rocky & Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right and Super Chicken. Who was funnier: Avery or Ward? Does it matter?! This big-screen contest will screen the best of the best ? and the audience will be victor!

To a true fan of animation there simply cannot be anything a whole lot better than this.

There will be those that will write off “Winnie the Pooh” because of its slight running time and lack of thematic expansiveness. But that’s really missing the point. “Winnie the Pooh,” in its own special way, captures the creative magic of being a child, when a rainy afternoon and 66 minutes alone with your stuffed animal friends (the tiger with the spring-loaded tail, the pair of cuddly kangaroos) was all that you needed to spin a truly captivating yarn. The characters, with their purposely sketchy look that brings to mind earlier animation incarnations as well as the books’ original drawings, are just the kind of friends that you’d want on such an adventure, and their relationship with Christopher Robin gives the movie an unaccountably deep emotional payoff. “Winnie the Pooh” is unquestionably the summer’s best animated feature – charming, funny, warm, and beautiful; it’s a reminder that simplicity isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and that you shouldn’t have to wear 3D glasses to truly appreciate animation. Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain ? a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It?s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

BD Horror News - TV: 'El Superbeasto' Gets His Own Series? (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/25343)

Rob Zombie is quite the busy guy. In addition to being knee deep in pre-production on The Lords Of Salem, directing a Woolite commercial (which you can see here), touring with the likes of Slayer and Iron Maiden and preparing to enter the studio for a fifth album, it looks like he's also been thinking a lot about El Superbeasto, his short-lived comic book character that eventually got his own animated feature.

Variety reports that he's working on a proposed TV adaptation of the flick, which follows the exploits of a washed-up Mexican wrestler in the mythic world of Monsterland. I imagine Starz would be the first channel choice if this ever got off the ground, seeing as they released the feature. But wherever it ends up, it's probably going to be a pay channel since the source material isn't network television friendly at all.

The best movie of the week isn't about wizards and wands. Capone views the delightful WINNIE THE POOH!!!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50396)

I hate to begin a positive review so negatively, but screw all CG animation. If a one-hour feature (plus a five-minute short) can make me laugh and feel as much as this classically rendered WINNIE THE POOH did, then I'm in favor of banning it forever. What I wasn't prepared for was how instantaneously my childhood came rushing back to me.

I'm not sure if it was just seeing these wonderful characters back on the big screen (for the first time in 35 years) or hearing their voices again or seeing this collection of talking stuffed animals under the guidance of Christopher Robin, but my God, this one had me captivated. And as much as this film is clearly aimed at young children, there are going to be more than a few weepy and/or giddy adults by their side.

WINNIE THE POOH avoids all the trappings of today's animated features. There's no 3D, no elaborately rendered backdrops, no zany voice actors. There's a grace and dignity to these creatures and to this simply told stories. I'm not sure how else to put it, but revisiting Pooh and his friends put me in a place where being a kid was fun and treasuring the small things was a fine art. This is a beautiful, elegant work that no child should miss.

BD Horror News - TV: Beavis And Butthead Do 'Human Centipede'? (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/25678)

I think it's safe to assume that most of us grew up watching Beavis And Butthead, whether we had to sneak out after our parents were asleep to watch it or not (maybe that last part was just me...). Mike Judge has done a lot of great, noteworthy things since the show ended - Office Space and Idiocracy are brilliant - but the two slackers inspire quite a bit of nostalgia and randomly show up on MTV every now and then. There's been talk of Beavis And Butthead making a comeback for quite a while and at this past Comic-Con, Judge showed off a preview of some new bits which you can check out after the break.

The guys used to spend their time ridiculing music videos but they've kind of expanded their horizons - hopefully not THAT much - and are going to be reviewing flicks in an 'At The Movies' sort of setting, starting with The Human Centipede.

"That?s the only one I?ve done so far and one of the things I have them do after they show a clip of the movie is I have them talking about how there?s going to be a Sex and the City 3, why don?t they combine it with a Human Centipede sequel and just have those girls all get lost in the forest, the doctor strings them all together and you get two sequels in one," said Judge. "Since I?ve done that, now there is a sequel to Human Centipede. It?ll still play hopefully. That?s part of the reason we?re waiting is we want to do a movie that?s just coming out. We have this animated set of them on a Siskel and Ebert like set."

Brawndo is sponsoring the show, right?

Why does no one blame the parents. It's not like 8 year olds are taking themselves to the movies. When I was a kid we had a say in what we wanted to see but ultimately the choice was made by my parents. Because of that I was exposed to stuff that my young mind may not have been drawn to. Simply indulging your child every time they point at the tv and shout 'shiny' is one of the reasons that kids entertainment sucks so bad.

I'm not going to give the parents full pass, but... when the kids see Smurfs **** on TV, they want to see it. All their friends want to see it. Then the weekend rolls around and you can either take your kid to see what they want to see or what you want them to see.

As crap as it is, I'm not going to blame them for taking the kid to see what the kid wants to see and what all the kids friends are seeing.

Yeah, but to be honest the Smurfs and Chipmunks sucked. I preferred the old school violence and quality animation of Tom and Jerry and the Looney Tunes.

Plus as an adult you can't be walking around with Smurfs and Chipmunks gear, but Wile E. Coyote is timeless:

It's not really remake mania...it's the wholesale strip mining of our childhoods. I really believe that the studios think that they are more likely to draw in the adults, who are taking the children to the movies, with this desperate ploy. If only they realized that if they made the cartoons multilayered, like the cartoons of our youth, they could accomplish that. It's common sense, when you were a child you loved Looney Tunes, Rocky & Bulwinkle etc. with a child's eyes, yet as an adult those cartoons had whole new meaning. Are writers not smart enough anymore to acheive that balance? No, studios dumb down these things because putting a familiar face on a pile of **** is easier than taking a chance at making something special. And, if you are a parent, and you give them money...you are rewarding them. I know it's hard to say no to your kids...but try it sometime, they just might thank you for it later.

To be fair, there is plenty of entertainment aimed at kids that is actually well done and liked by adults, too. Stuff like How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and Pixar (although that seems to be skewing more and more towards adults).

It's the same as it is with every other genre, though. Once something is made and works really well, the studios throw out half-assed attempts at what they think is similar, but without the same level of love or care. And that horse**** continues to make money.

People say 'It's all about the story,'" Hendrickson said. "When you're making tentpole films, bull****." Hendrickson showed a chart of the top 12 all-time domestic grossers, and noted every one is a spectacle film. Of his own studio's "Alice in Wonderland," which is on the list, he said: "The story isn't very good, but visual spectacle brought people in droves. And Johnny Depp didn't hurt."

Many of us have seen, or at least have heard of, the 1989 animated film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (seen above). Based on the groundbreaking comic strip by Winsor McCay, it centers on a young boy and the wild adventures he has in his dreams. Long before its release, the film went through years of development hell and, at one point, was actually being developed by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Ultimately, Miyazaki and his team left the project and it became something very different, but a clip has now surfaced that gives us an idea of what Little Nemo in Dreamland, the Ghibli version of the film, might have been.

Disney/Pixar have announced that they’re going into the vault and dusting off “Beauty And The Beast,” “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.” and “The Little Mermaid” all for 3D releases over the next few years. You get what you ask for people.

First up will be “Beauty And The Beast” arriving on January 13, 2012. Unlike, “The Lion King” this was just reissued in a brand new spiffy edition last year, but it’s all about release dates. January is completely dry of any other new family films, so Disney will likely still make a mint on this one from parents who need to park their kids somewhere out of the house for a couple of hours. Smart play. Replicating “The Lion King” date almost exactly, “Finding Nemo” will swim into theaters on September 14, 2012 and again (at least so far), it’s the lone family movie in sight and again, even though it’s on DVD, it’s something to give the kids to do.

Continuing the January/September format, “Monsters Inc.” will hit no January 18, 2013 and will serve as a good refresher before the prequel “Monsters University” lands on June 21, 2013. Finally, “The Little Mermaid” will come ashore on September 13, 2013.

Fox May Shut Down THE SIMPSONS If Harry Shearer Doesn’t Take Less Than $400,000 Per Episode!!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/51487)

Fox appears willing to shut down “The Simpsons” after more than two decades if its six core cast members don’t take a reduction of their $400,000-per-episode salary.

Here’s the thing. While “Simpsons” still does well for Fox, Fox has other shows that do well also. Plus Fox can always ask Seth McFarlane to make another one of his ****ty shows to replace "The Simpsons." How “The Simpsons” ranks against other Fox fare:

FOX SHOWS 18-49
4.5 (4.8) (---) (---) New Girl
4.1 (4.4) (---) (---) The X Factor (We)
3.9 (---) (---) (---) House
3.9 (4.3) (---) (---) The X Factor (Th)
3.7 (4.0) (1.0) (---) Glee
3.5 (4.1) (---) (1.9) Family Guy
3.1 (3.1) (---) (---) Terra Nova
3.0 (3.9) (---) (2.4) The Simpsons
2.9 (3.1) (0.8) (---) Raising Hope
2.7 (3.0) (---) (---) American Dad
2.6 (3.1) (---) (---) Cleveland Show
1.7 (1.6) (1.0) (0.9) Kitchen Nightmares
1.2 (1.5) (0.6) (0.6) Fringe
--- (1.0) (1.1) (1.0) Cops

Fox can also potentially just hire a bunch of impressionists to play Bart, Apu and Mr. Burns. This could keep up the demand for “Simpsons” lunch boxes, video games and so on.

It would probably be easy enough for the voice actors to walk away. Roughly 66 “Simpsons” episodes were produced over the series’ last three full seasons; $400,000 x 66 = $26.4 million per voice actor. That’s just the last three years; the 23rd season is airing now.

Will not happen. A second movie hangs in the balance and there is just too much money to be made here.

'Simpsons' actor breaks silence, says Fox should share profits | Inside TV | EW.com (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/10/07/simpsons-harry-shearer/?iid=blogM-1H-MC-'Simpsons'%20actor%20breaks%20silence,%20says%20Fo x%20should%20share%20profits)

The cast and producers of The Simpsons have been silent since news of their latest contract war with studio 20th Century Fox TV broke out. Until now. Cast member Harry Shearer — who provides the voice for Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Kent Brockman, and other characters — issued a lengthy statement explaining his position on why the actors are holding out for a better deal to keep the show on the air (it’s a bit awkward when you’re publicly demanding a large salary in the middle of a recession, a fact Shearer seems very aware of here). See what you think, below. Does Shearer come across like humble Ned Flanders? Or Mr. Burns?

For many years now, the cast of “The Simpsons” has been trying to get Fox to agree that, like so many other people who’ve contributed significantly to the show’s success, we be allowed a tiny share of the billions of dollars in profits the show has earned. Fox has consistently refused to even consider the matter. Instead, it’s paid us salaries that, while ridiculous by any normal standard, pale in comparison to what the show’s profit participants have been taking home.

Now, as the show enters its twenty-third season, we are engaged in what will probably be our last contract negotiation with Fox. As you may have heard, the network has taken the position that “The Simpsons” no longer makes enough money and that unless we in the cast accept a 45% pay cut, they are not going to bring the show back for a twenty-fourth season.

Obviously, there are a lot more important things going on in the world right now, in the streets of New York and elsewhere. But given how many people seem to care about what happens to our show – and how much misinformation has been flying around – I thought it might make sense for at least one member of the cast to speak out directly. I should note that I am speaking only for myself, and not for any of the other actors on the show.

Fox wants to cut our salaries in half because it says it can’t afford to continue making the show under what it calls the existing business model. Fox hasn’t explained what kind of new business model it has formulated to keep the show on the air, but clearly the less money they have to pay us in salary, the more they’re able to afford to continue broadcasting the show. And to this I say, fine – if pay cuts are what it will take to keep the show on the air, then cut my pay. In fact, to make it as easy as possible for Fox to keep new episodes of “The Simpsons” coming, I’m willing to let them cut my salary not just 45% but more than 70% – down to half of what they said they would be willing to pay us. All I would ask in return is that I be allowed a small share of the eventual profits.

My representatives broached this idea to Fox yesterday, asking the network how low a salary number I would have to accept to make a profit participation feasible. My representatives were told there was no such number. There were, the Fox people said, simply no circumstances under which the network would consider allowing me or any of the actors to share in the show’s success.

As a member of the “Simpsons” cast for 23 years, I think it’s fair to say that we’ve had a great run and no one should feel sorry for any of us. But given how much joy the show has given so many people over the years – and given how many billions of dollars in profits News Corp. has earned and will earn from it – I find it hard to believe that this is Fox’s final word on the subject. At least I certainly hope it isn’t, because the alternative is to cancel the show or fire me for having the gall to try to save the show by helping Fox with its new business model. Neither would be a fair result – either to those of us who have committed so many years to the show or to its loyal fans who make our effort worthwhile.

Almost inevitable considering Shearer is a known 'troublemaker'. He's absolutely right though, consider the merchandising on the Simpsons alone. This show makes waaaaay too much money for the powers that be to cry poverty. Shame on you Fox. Just come out and say you want to keep more of the money, at least that would be honest.

MTV Opens Online Archive of ‘Liquid Television’ Shorts | /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/mtv-opens-online-archive-liquid-television-shorts/)

This is TERRIFIC news. Most of you don't remember, but at one point Mtv was a vital, edgy thing.

I’m not sure how long this has been online, but judging by the reaction I see it getting on Twitter today, either it hasn’t been long or no one realized what MTV had done. But for those who spent late nights with MTV in the early ’90s, when the channel celebrated the unusual corners of pop culture as well as the fat, chewy center, this is going to be one hell of a trip. And for younger animation fans that haven’t had a chance to experience some of these shorts, it’s a goldmine.

Liquid Television was a ground-breaking animation anthology that featured some very early computer animation and very strange and funny shorts by noted animators and designers such as Charles Burns, Richard Sala, David Daniels, and Bill Plympton. It ran from 1991 to 1994; some of the included shorts were new, and others, like Mike Judge‘s Frog Baseball (the introduction of Beavis and Butthead) were sourced from traveling animation festivals like Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation. Liquid Television was also the home for the original Aeon Flux series.

The series has been collected in a couple of VHS and DVD releases over the years, but those are all long out of print. Now a great deal of the show is archived online, and presented in great quality. Check out a few clips below.

MTV has a big Liquid Television portal up, and I encourage everyone to check out the oddities within. Not all of it is gold, but there are some really wonderful things to be found.

I can't remember, I can't recall.

The Maxx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maxx)

The comic book series was adapted into an animated series as part of the MTV program Oddities. It covered Darker Image #1, The Maxx #1/2, and issues #1-11 of the regular series, depicting the introduction of Julie, the original Maxx, Mr. Gone, and later, Sarah. The series included few of the revelations of the characters' origins, however, and did not describe the interconnections between them.

The animation frequently changes styles. In one scene, characters may be rendered in detail but in the next, they may be simplified and cartoonish. Often this is done to show a change in perspective. CGI and even live-action are sometimes integrated in with the hand-drawn animation. Critics such as Richard Matthes have noted how much of the animation is based directly on panels from the comic.[2]

The show was released once on VHS, though strangely missing an episode,[citation needed] then later in 2009 it became available to stream on MTV.com[3] though only to American audiences. On December 17th, 2009, The Maxx became available on DVD exclusively through Amazon.com's CreateSpace "Manufacture-on-Demand" program[4] which contains every episode of the television show and also includes audio commentary on each episode plus interviews with Creator Sam Kieth & Director Gregg Vanzo.[5]

Seth MacFarlane Talks Ending FAMILY GUY, Rebooting STAR TREK, and More (http://collider.com/seth-macfarlane-family-guy-star-trek/120208/)

For those who think that maybe the return of the once canceled animated comedy series Family Guy has run its course since being brought back from the dead, you may have one pivotal team member on your side: series creator Seth MacFarlane. In a recent cover story from THR, the man who has been dominating Fox’s Animation Domination with series like Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad, says he thinks the show may need to call it quits on TV. MacFarlane says, “Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended. I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series. I talk to the fans and in a way I’m kind of secretly hoping for them to say we’re done with it. There are plenty of people who say the show is kind of over the hill. But still the vast majority go pale in the face when I mention the possibility.” However, even if the series were to end, that wouldn’t be the end of the Griffins. MacFarlane said he would love to be able to make a movie every couple years, “Creatively, that would be the way to do it for me. Do a really fantastic final episode while the show is still strong.” Fans would be disappointed, but in a way it’s good to hear that MacFarlane himself knows that he might need to quit before the show overstays its welcome.

Mastodon Team Up With ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ (http://loudwire.com/mastodon-aqua-teen-hunger-force/)

The recent love affair between cartoons and metal has been a passionate one. The seemingly separate worlds most notably collided in 2006 in the animated series ‘Metalocalypse,’ which went on to become a worldwide phenomenon and a staple show for Cartoon Network. It seems like the metal gods are far from finished with the cartoon world, as Mastodon bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders recently revealed that the progressive metal band and ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ have decided to team up for what is sure to be a brutally funny collaboration.

Sanders discussed Mastodon’s involvement with ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ in a recent interview with myYearbook. “Yes, we’re actually going to be involved in an upcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode. That’s always fun to do, it’s always a unique opportunity to go in and do music and voice-overs. It’s such a fun way to do something that is Mastodon-ish but also unexpected,” stated Sanders. “We’re very fortunate that the Adult Swim family has embraced Mastodon and has tried to include us on many things. We hope to have more opportunities like that because it’s such a great experience.””

This won’t be the first time Mastodon and ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ have teamed up. In 2007, Mastodon helped create a heavy metal parody of the classic ‘Let’s All Go to the Lobby’ movie theater jingle for ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters.’

There is no word yet on whether Mastodon will appear in the episode as themselves, but it’s a definite possibility, with rock legends such as Glenn Danzig and Zakk Wylde having both played themselves on past ‘Aqua Teen’ episodes.

The new Mastodon cd firmly cements them as the Queensryche of the new metal scene. Very prog. And a very difficult listen. You need to be in the mood, but damn it pays off.

For as much of a hassle the marketing for this one has turned out to be, it better be good. Actually, word has it it's pretty enjoyable. But jesu christo, man. We've been working on it, no joke, since the beginning of the year. Or so it seems. But like I said, the animated movie I'm looking forward to at year's end is TinTin. My dad was a huge TinTin fan as a kid, even he's excited about this one, and he doesn't go to movies.

The SDCC panel with Spielberg/Jackson was magic. Edgar Wright/Joe Cornish worked on the script and the boys(Frost/Pegg) were a part of it. The footage looked great. Little concerning that they picked/pecked from the TinTin canon, but I cannot see it NOT being cool as ****. Whether that translates to Box Office success, who knows.

DreamWorks Animation Wins Bidding War For 'Captain Underpants' (http://www.slashfilm.com/dreamworks-animation-wins-bidding-war-captain-underpants/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+slashfilm+%28%2FFilm%29&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Another popular series of children’s books has just been purchased for adaptation and this one features an old man walking around in his underwear. On Wednesday, DreamWorks Animation won a bidding war for the rights to the Scholastic book series Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. The eight book series is about two fourth graders who hypnotize their evil principal into becoming a superhero named Captain Underpants however, being as he has no superpowers, the boys have to stealthy follow him around to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble. The series is critically acclaimed, a best-seller, and has been on Hollywood wishlists for over a decade but Pilkey didn’t want to sell the rights until now. There’s more after the break.

Deadline broke the news that DreamWorks won the bidding war against several other companies, but didn’t say which others were interested. DreamWorks Animation CCO Bill Damaschke did say the following about why he’s wanted the property since it first hit shelves in 1997.

There’s a great anarchic combination of kid and adult humor, and George and Harold are these terrific mischievous characters. And we felt that hypnotizing the principal is one of those great ideas. We’re all big fans of the book.

1st look at Robot Chicken's slightly NSFW DC superheroes special | Blastr (http://blastr.com/2011/10/1st-look-at-robot-chicken.php)

The guys at Robot Chicken love spoofing sci-fi. They make stop-motion fun of everyone from Optimus Prime to Boba Fett, and now they're devoting an entire special to the heroes and villains of DC Comics. Catch a sneak peek of the hilarity in this slightly NSFW duel between Green Lantern and Sinestro.

The special—entitled "RC/DC" and set to premiere sometime next summer on Adult Swim—was announced at New York Comic Con earlier this month by Robot Chicken co-creator Seth Green and DC Comics chief creative officer (and writer of Justice League, Green Lantern and Aquaman) Geoff Johns.

The preview clip was posted on Adult Swim's site yesterday and tweeted to the world by Johns:

"A taste of the Robot Chicken: DC Comics Special Summer '12 on Adult Swim! (Not for kids!)"
The clip features a supervillain battle that goes horribly wrong for Green Lantern, forcing him to find a new way to use his signature power ring. Dirty joke fun ensues

PUSS IN BOOTS Review (http://collider.com/puss-in-boots-review/122848/)

Puss in Boots is an adventure movie, but the advertising and the film’s first act would like you to believe otherwise. The filmmakers can’t be held responsible for DreamWorks Animation’s marketing campaign, but they can take the blame for setting up their movie as an action-comedy before choosing to drop the jokes and shifting into a rote adventure film that takes no chances, makes dated references, and short-changes its title character. Ironically, the technical aspects of the movie are full of passion, but the story is as soulless and calculated as they come.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

A misunderstood boy who can speak with the dead, takes on ghosts, zombies and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, in order to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

The first trailer for the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman has been released. The film comes from LAIKA, the animation studio that brought us Coraline, and centers on a boy whose ability to talk to the dead comes in handy when his town is ravaged by zombies, ghosts, witches, moronic grown-ups, and a centuries-old curse. We don’t get any dialogue from this teaser, as it’s just a montage of scenes with Donovan’s appropriately titled “Season of the Witch” playing over the scenes. The images here are pretty spectacular, as expected, and I like the design of the characters. The tag of the trailer really got me as well. I’m excited to see more from this peculiar little fella.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film features the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In), Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, and Alex Borstein. ParaNorman opens August 17th, 2012.

Review: ‘Puss In Boots’ A Fun Adventure & Worthwhile Spinoff From The Lagging ‘Shrek’ Franchise > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/review_puss_in_boots_a_fun_adventure_worthwhile_sp inoff_from_the_lagging_sh/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Suffice it to say that you’ll probably enjoy the film even more if you’re a cat lover, given its shrewd observations of their behavior; there’s nothing quite as amusing as an anthropomorphized character succumbing to his animal nature, and Miller and co. do a great job of making those moments count. But “Puss in Boots” is a great, and great-looking, little adventure, which requires no prior knowledge of the title character from previous films, and conjures such an intriguing world that neither the filmmakers will ever have to go back to “Shrek” to find more material, nor will the audience have to revisit them to understand it. At the risk of endorsing corporate ambition, DreamWorks has made a film worthy of its own franchise, and one which reflects the company’s evolving maturity as tellers of stories with more substantial shelf lives. Overall, “Puss in Boots” is a fun, beautiful and brilliantly-executed 3D opus, because unlike the last two “Shrek” films, its execution exemplifies the first half of the company’s name, without evoking the crass, machinelike execution of the second. (B+)

BoobyTrap and I saw this this weekend and I pretty much agree with the summary above. It was a lot of fun and I think we'll be buying it when it comes out.

VIFF ‘11: Lo-Fi Puppets And A Big, Hilarious Heart; ‘Kooky’ Is Destined To Be A Family Cult Classic > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/viff_11_kooky_review/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

While, yes, “Kooky” is a family film, there’s no better descriptor for it than this simple, direct and vulgar statement: it’s ****ing awesome! We could end this review right there and feel real good about it…so what about the film, directed by Czech-born writer/director Jan Sver?k (the Oscar nominated “Kolya”), has us all in a tizzy? It’s a film after our ‘80s nostalgia-drenched childhood heart, and it’s won it completely. “Kooky,” with its you-can-actually-touch-them puppets and clever, lo-fi character and world creation, manages to successfully straddle that fine line of reminding us of films we love from the past (“The Dark Crystal,” “The NeverEnding Story,” “Labyrinth,” “Return to Oz”) while also being something completely new and fresh. It easily places amongst some of the best family films of recent memory (Pixar not included) that also share a hand-made quality to them and a palpable sense of peril (“Where the Wild Things Are,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Coraline”).

There’s so much worth gushing about over “Kooky.” It’s so damn charming and hilarious and whimsical and messy. Part of that charm is that it’s by no means perfect; we’d even go so far as saying it’s a little rough at times. Any film that decides to use the oft-dreaded dubbing in place of subtitles is ripe for ridicule, but here it at least seems to be a deliberate artistic choice by the filmmakers and ends up adding to the humor in ways that would be completely lost if the film were subtitled. Better to experience the lovely visuals and breathtaking, visceral chases through a fantasy land that is all too real and tangible. The crisp, beautiful cinematography by Mark Bliss and Vladim?r Smutn? (he’s something of a regular collaborator with Sver?k, having shot several of his other films), is at odds with the cheapie puppet aesthetics (and we mean that as a compliment), wonderfully countering the rough/raw/artificial/man-made feel of the characters with a smooth, sun-rain-and-snow-drenched natural background filled with natural lens flares.

But the biggest compliment we can give to this fantastic and fantastical film is that, like the best family or kids’ movies, it’s better served being labeled for what it really is. “Kooky” is just a great, magical film. Period. End of story. [A-]

Wow, I really like the look and sound of this one. Please, god, let it get a decent release out here!!!!!!!!!!

TAILCHASER'S SONG Gets Its Animation Partner, Plus Exclusive Concept Art!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/51862)

Earlier this year we reported at AICN that Paul Alvarado-Dykstra and Samantha Inoue-Harte, and their production company Animetropolis would be starting work on an animated film adaptation of Tad Williams' TAILCHASER'S SONG. The book is a fantasy with cats as the characters, a bit like WATERSHIP DOWN but a bit more epic in scale. Now comes word that they have partnered with International Digital Artists for co-production and as lead animators for the project. You may know IDA from CAT **** ONE, the action-packed animated series about a hostage rescue team made up of fluffy bunny rabbits. IDA is the first Japanese studio ever nominated for a VES (Visual Effects Society) Award for animation for CAT **** ONE. Here's a trailer (it starts after about a minute):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wncS6tO59M&feature=player_embedded

I love the animation, and I think IDA is suited to bring Tad Williams' book to the screen. If you haven't read TAILCHASER'S SONG, I recommend it - it's a terrific read, and for those of us who are cat lovers, it just confirms how awesome cats are.

Read this, and as a lifelong fan of WATERSHIP DOWN(possibly the greatest book ever written...yes I am talking to you The Bible...), it is a great book and should make a tremendous movie.

The All-New Popeye Hour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_All-New_Popeye_Hour)

1978-83

"Because of restrictions on violence on TV cartoons for children at the time, in this version Popeye did not throw punches to get back at Bluto; he often lifted him, with his own hands or with machinery, and hurled him away."

Ugh! I don't know if I have watched this, but I don't think so. Popeye and Bluto fighting is the whole point, lol!

I remember this episode where Popeye and Bluto went to visit Olive and she told them to wait while she finished the dishes. But before that, she went back out to the living room to give serve them lemonade, and they were already starting to fight. So she told them that she wanted them to start laughing so that she'll hear them from the kitchen and know that they weren't fighting. But when she went back in, they continued laughing and started beating the **** of each other, lol.

Now that's classic children's entertainment. mhihi:
