Shout! Factory Takes Us on a Ride Through Damnation Alley to Oblivion | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central (http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/44533/shout-factory-takes-us-ride-through-damnation-alley-oblivion)

In Damnation Alley, the world is devastated by a nuclear holocaust, causing the Earth to tilt on its axis and bringing vast meteorological chaos. As the weather stabilizes, mutated insects start to emerge, preying on the survivors. The surviving crew at a U.S. Air Force bomb shelter in the Mojave Desert picks up radio signals coming from Albany. The commander, Major Eugene Denton (George Peppard, The A-Team), unveils two armored vehicles he has constructed and announces a plan to cross ?Damnation Alley,? the hundred-mile-wide strip between areas of radiation hazard, to join the survivors. They set off, taking on two civilians ? a novice singer they find in the ruins of Las Vegas and a wild teenager (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) ? along the way. The journey is also beset by giant mutated cockroaches, storms and crazed survivalists, making for some hair-raising escapes in this post-apocalyptic thriller.

Originally released in theatres in 1977 from 20th Century Fox., Damnation Alley has been out-of-print on VHS for several years causing passionate fans to highly anticipate its debut on DVD and Blu-ray.

Malcolm McDowell and Leon Vitali Interview A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (http://collider.com/malcolm-mcdowell-leon-vitali-interview-a-clockwork-orange/91467/)

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Malcolm McDowell and Leon Vitali for the upcoming 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition of Stanley Kubrick?s seminal sci-fi satire, A Clockwork Orange, which hits stores on May 31st. While most of you know McDowell from his career defining turn as Alex in Kubrick?s film, Vitali is also an important part in the filmmaker?s legacy. After first collaborating with Kubrick on Barry Lyndon, where he played the role of Lord Bullingdon, Vitali became a friend and adviser to the iconoclastic director. After Kubrick?s death, Vitali was put in charge of the DVD restoration of all of Kubrick?s films.

We got to chat for about an hour, so this interview is loaded with great information on both the artistic elements of acting in a film and the technical minutia of actually making a film. We discussed everything from the invention of Steadicam, to Kubrick?s often blunt interactions with actors, to Anthony Burgess?s original thoughts on the film adaptation of his novel, and much, much more.

It's a great little flick Adge...most of the people who know these kind of things threw the word giallo out a lot. All I know is that it was a dark little home invasion flick with Ben Foster completely sociopathic and B-Willy actually acting his way through a movie instead of winking his way about.

Yes. I haven't got one, so I can't make a recommendation, though.

Although, IIRC, anything on a Blu that is actually high-def will work on any player. I have a UK Blu of Raging Phoenix and the movie plays just fine, but some of the special features don't work.

A new HD transfer sounds promising. Some of the stuff from Something Weird like Basket Case can definitely be improved upon picture. Other, should I say with even less production values, not so much, but that's part of the charm. ;)

And I still want to watch a silent blu-ray to see if they look better than DVD editions.

Straw Dogs Blu-ray (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6976)

Timed to coincide with the theatrical release of director Rod Lurie's remake, MGM Home Entertainment will bring the original Straw Dogs to Blu-ray this September.

While MGM has confirmed that the Blu-ray will feature a DTS-HD Master Audio track and 1080p picture quality, the studio has not announced any further technical details or supplemental features; while the Criterion Collection had a limited edition DVD of the film with many special features, there is no advance word on whether or not those bonus materials (or some newly produced ones) will accompany this new Blu-ray.

Furthermore, MGM has not specified if the Blu-ray will contain the slightly more graphic Director's Cut of Straw Dogs.

All-new Road to Wadesboro: The Location of Evil Dead II featurette
All-new Cabin Fever: Behind the Scenes of Evil Dead II" featurette
All-new Evil Dead II interactive archive, featuring production stills, marketing materials, production stills, and early effects tests
Vintage featurettes and behind-the-scenes footage
TV spots and trailers

Furthermore, while the studio has not yet confirmed the technical specifications for the Blu-ray, Red Shirt Pictures' Michael Felsher told Fangoria Magazine in a recent interview that "Lionsgate is aware of how dissatisfied people were with the transfer on the previous Evil Dead II Blu-ray, and are taking steps to solve that issue for the new edition."

The 25th Anniversary Edition of Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn is expected to street on November 15th.

The Blu-ray is presented in 1080p high definition with English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and Spanish Dolby Digital Mono with English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.

The film has been endlessly imitated and parodied and helped to energize the independent film movement that was slowly gaining momentum in the early 1990s thanks to directors like Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Wes Anderson, and David O. Russell and the success and influence of the Sundance Film Festival. There isn’t much more that can be said. Pulp Fiction is a modern cinematic classic and its Blu-ray release is a cause for celebration.

This trailer was considered a little too hot for TV, and may be a bit NSFW if you catch my drift.

Pulp Fiction will be released on Blu-ray on October 4th, 2011.

Spielberg Fans Rejoice! JAWS Is Coming To Blu-Ray, And The Date Is...
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/52366)

Remember Quint's awesome interview with Steven Spielberg earlier in the year? When I wasn't pulling my hair out with envy I was reading every bit of information I could about a high definition release for JAWS. Seems as if Spielberg's been working on it for some time. Well, according to sources, The Digital Bits has the skinny on when to expect the JAWS Blu-Ray - August 14th, 2012!

No word on any special features, but I really hope both the original laserdisc documentary, as well as THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING, would be on there in some form. I'll buy this one in a half-second, as I'm sure many of you will as well. Universal is also talking about releasing a box set of the Universal Monsters on Blu-Ray as well.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will kick off the celebration in January with a special 50th anniversary release of To Kill a Mockingbird, debuting on Blu-rayTM for the first time ever. Shout Factory Announces New Sub-Label. Halloween II, Halloween III Blu-rays And More! | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/95486/shout-factory-announces-new-sub-label-halloween-ii-halloween-iii-blu-rays-and-more/)

Scream Factory’s inaugural programming debuts this September with Collector’s Edition Blu-rays of both Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of the Witch. While the technical specifications are still unknown for Scream’s HD sets, the Blu-rays contain a number of bonus supplements, such as:

Halloween II -

Two audio commentaries:
– Director Rick Rosenthal
– Stunt co-ordinator/actor Dick Warlock
The Nightmare Isn’t Over: The Making Of Halloween II documentary featuring Rick Rosenthal, Lance Guest, Dick Warlock, Alan Howarth, and Dean Cundey
Horror’s Hallowed Grounds featurette on the original shooting locations
Still gallery
Theatrical trailer, TV and radio spots
A limited edition – less than 500 copies made – Haddonfield Memorial Hospital nurse’s hat if Halloween II is purchased at Shout Factory’s website

Halloween III: Season of the Witch -

Two audio commentaries:
– Director Tommy Lee Wallace
– Star Tom Atkins
Stand Alone: The Making Of Halloween III: Season Of The Witch documentary featuring Tommy Lee Wallace, Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, Dick Warlock, and Dean Cundey
Horror’s Hallowed Grounds featurette on the original shooting locations
Still gallery
Theatrical trailers and TV spots
A limited edition – less than 500 copies made – poster if Halloween III is purchased at Shout Factory’s website

Both discs are expected to street on September 18th.

Following these two titles, Scream Factory will offer Blu-rays of Terror Train, John Carpenter’s They Live, the screen adaptation of Peter Benchley’s The Island, Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse, Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm II, Death Valley, and Wes Craven’s Deadly Blessing.

Release dates, as well as exact technical and supplementary details, are still unknown for the aforementioned titles, though Shout promises that each title will get “anamorphic widescreen [transfers], and most will be released in a ‘Collector’s Edition’ packed with new bonus content, archival materials, a collectible cover featuring newly rendered retro-style artwork, [and] a reversible wrap with original theatrical key art.”

Being the GIGANTIC fan of Halloween III that I am, I just may spring for that limited edition. I’m just glad a company is finally giving it the special treatment it deserves.

I’m also glad that The Island is finally being released, as that’s one film I’ve been wanting to see for a long time, and I was going to rent it from Amazon’s Instant Video service (I probably still will), but it’s such a wacky sounding movie, that I’ll probably end up getting it.

Death Valley is an interesting little curio as it stars Peter Billingsley, Stephen McHattie, and Wilford Brimley, and deals with a kid (Billingsley) who finds his way into an RV that unknown to him has dead people, he steals something that belongs to the killer, and a cat and mouse game ensues. It’s a lot better than it sounds.

Last, but certainly not least is the fact that this isn’t just Shout Factory releasing them. They’ve created a new sub-label called Scream Factory that will specialize in horror films, so buy these films, so we can get many more underseen horror films released.

Oh, but seriously, I keep asking this question and I don't know if I've gotten a satisfying answer. Does blu-ray notably improve the quality of movies as old as the Universal monster movies? Silents?

I tend to assume that it wouldn't make that much of a difference because of how old those movies are, but I could be wrong.

Dunno, just the dvd age in itself set off a golden age of sorts for early talkies and silents because it became worthy to restore these films since one could appreciate these transfers on DVD as opposed to VHS.

I am just curious to watch some of the older stuff from Criterion and Kino on blu-ray, but you know about me. :)

Honestly, if the transfer is good, they're amazing. I have The Searchers on Blu-Ray and it blew my mind. The Star Wars ones look like they were filmed today. It's quite impressive if the transfer is done as well as it can be done these days. The studios generally seem to do amazing jobs on the classic movies that people care about too. Not just in picture quality, but in sound as well.

jerseydevil
June 30th, 2012, 11:01 PM
Agreed. All about a)the original negative they are working from and b) the transfer and how much time/money they intend on spending. The Universal classics were already cleaned up to beautiful effect, so they don't have a long way to go, and if they show 1/2 the love they spent on the dvd reissues...these will definitely be worth the price.

I would upgrade my DVD edition of the Re-Animator, lol, but you know me. :P

I had the felt tip pen that looked like the syringe used in the film, but I lost it. :(

It's good that it's been upgraded to blu-ray though. Sounds like it will contain the previous features. The cast commentary is a hoot! Haha! Hey Barbara, did you remember whose hands were those...(one of actors in the room)...I think they were Gordon's.

Yeah. Probably not, but Barbara is a good sport for doing a commentary during those, um, colorful scenes. ;)

This Tuesday. You NEED to own this. Best Buy has a very shiny digibook exclusive that makes it even more of a must. I have seen screen caps of the restored vs original and I can tell you this is going to be a beautiful transfer. Read an article where it was brought up that a lot of critics blame this movie for the 'tentpole-ization' of summer movies. That's horribly unfair. Not to get political jd, but those taxes are being charged because of a push by the Democrat running the state right now, Jerry Brown. Not sure what Romney has to do with that. ;)

I purchase from Amazon a lot, and I have for years, so being taxed now in California for Amazon orders is a welcome change for me. I'm among the probably few who paid use tax on my California return for my Amazon (and other applicable) purchases. So, this makes fewer receipts I have to separate and calculate come tax time each year.

The Black Sunday Blu-ray is a little disappointing. No apparent attempt to clean up what is, at times, a very dusty print. No attempt to clean up pops in audio. Inconsistent blacks. I might be asking a little much for $20 for a bit of a niche item. I haven't finished watching the Blu-ray yet, but some of the early scenes look cleaner on the DVD. I wonder if possibly some of the artifacts were eaten up by the DVD compression.

Also, there are minor focus issues with some of the shots. I'm not sure whether the problems are with the print or with the photography. I haven't looked particularly closely, but my first impression is that it does not waver, so my first impression is it's not with the print/transfer. It's funny what the enhanced resolution can reveal.

Still, it's the first Mario Bava film I ever saw in a HD format, so I can't complain too much.

About to dive headfirst into Cabin after lunch.

The other day my dad and I went into BB to get my mom's birthday present (season 7 of The Closer.... *shudder*) and the rack space for it was empty. I figured I'd ask someone that worked there if there were any extra copies in back. After 10 ****ING MINUTES of not finding anyone, once being told "I'll get someone to look for you" and also being told "I'll be right back to help you" I just ordered the ****ing thing from Amazon on my phone. Yeah well they are speeding the decline by not even having enough new releases on the first day of sale. Cabin in the Woods sold out by 7:50pm. That's unacceptable. The really nice book/Bluray of Jaws they had exclusively...gone 1/2 way through the first day of sale and you can't even order it online. GONE. Got mine off of eBay for a little bit of a markup. Yes, people shop more online than in stores. But when you are realistically the last true physical copy store you need to at least stock some product. If you don't throw a dress and a coat of makeup on every once in a while who's fault is it if I stray???? Man, they used to try so hard. I knew some of the guys at the Los Feliz store on a first name basis. They simply are phoning it in. Literally. They aught to just go to selling TVs and phones and dispense with the charade.

Well, yeah, but I was thinking how often does one buy comps, phones, TVs, as opposed to buying music and movies. They don't give up the charade because it still gets people into the store on a weekly basis.

I get what you are saying. I could see them not stocking a pile high amount of Ed Wood, but really, they don't have enough of brand new Blu-Ray releases? I wouldn't know, lol, I don't but blu-rays, lol!

But seriously, I do remember years ago, when Blue Underground would acquire and re-release horror films, and I wanted a copy, and could always find one at BB that same day. And Blue Underground isn't uber obscure, like say Something Weird, lol, try finding those DVDs at stores, but they also aren't a big company. But thanks to BB, I could go there the day that BU's Maniac DVD came out, get it, watch a movie about a man who hates women, lol, and everyone was happy.

Not so much these days, huh? :(

It's the next Borders, people just go there to browse and waste time and not buy anything.

Warner Bros. Announces 3D Conversion of THE WIZARD OF OZ | Collider (http://collider.com/wizard-of-oz-3d/199911/)

Collider was in attendance this morning at a press event in Burbank where Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group celebrated their 90th anniversary* (*technically the company turns ninety on April 4th, 2013) by unveiling their new 90-year logo and announcing a slate of new Blu-ray and DVD transfers. However the biggest surprise was an announcement that they?re currently working on a special restoration and conversion of the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz from 2D to 3D. The new 3D edition of The Wizard of Oz will hit shelves everywhere sometime next year in September or October.

Also announced this morning, two new documentaries on working at the Warner?s Lot, a 100 DVD Collection of the Best Films from Warner Brothers and a 50 Blu-ray Collection of the Best Films from Warner Brothers, among others. For the full press release, a list of just what movies are included in the 50/100 film sets, a trailer for the sets, and images, hit the jump...

Here?s the press release:

Burbank, Calif., October 3, 2012 ? One of the most respected, diversified and successful motion picture studios in the world, Warner Bros. began when the eponymous brothers
? Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack ? incorporated on April 4, 1923. Four years later, the release of The Jazz Singer, the world?s first ?talkie,? set a tone of innovation and influence that would forever become synonymous with the Warner Bros. brand. Soon to be 90, Warner Bros. continues to entertain the world with films passionately produced, selectively acquired, carefully preserved and impeccably curated for both the casual and ultimate movie lover to enjoy forever.

As a result of all the films the studio has produced, co-produced (with numerous partners), acquired and distributed, Warner Bros. now boasts the largest film library in the world ? 6,800 feature films, with 2,000 films currently available on DVD and Blu-ray?. The library includes 22 Academy Award?*-winning Best Pictures (the most in Oscar? history), and leading franchises such as Harry Potter?, Batman?, Lord of the Rings?, The Matrix and Superman?.

Beginning in January, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group (WBHEG) will launch a major Anniversary initiative that will continue through year-end 2013. This includes the release of seven new collections, including two limited and numbered anniversary collections ? 100 films on DVD and 50 films on Blu-ray?, both the largest collections ever released, to date, in their respective formats. The year-long celebration will also include several stand-alone releases of new-to-format classics on Blu-ray? for the first time, including The Jazz Singer, all three James Dean films (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, Giant), Cabaret and Academy Award? Best Picture Winners Grand Hotel (1932), Mrs. Miniver (1943), and Driving Miss Daisy(1990).

The Collections

The Best of Warner Bros. 100 Film DVD Collection*: 100 movies including all 22 of Warner Bros. library?s Best Picture ? Winners and two new documentaries (details below) on 55 discs presented in book style premium packaging.

The Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film Blu-ray? Collection* includes 50 movies and the two new documentaries on 52 discs, also presented in book style premium packaging. It will introduce several new-to-Blu-ray film titles, including Grand Hotel, Mrs. Miniver, and Driving Miss Daisy.

Both of the above are limited and numbered collections and each includes a collectible poster and series of art cards featuring movie poster designs created by legendary American graphic designer Bill Gold.

Gold, who worked with Hollywood?s greatest filmmakers, including Clint Eastwood, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Elia Kazan, and Ridley Scott, had this to say:

?My 65-year career began with Yankee Doodle Dandy and Casablanca and continued on to every Clint Eastwood picture from Dirty Harry to Mystic River (and I came out of retirement to design the poster for J. Edgar). In my wildest dreams I could not have foreseen the world I would inhabit and the joy it would bring me over the years. Every poster I worked on had a story to tell, and I?m delighted to be able to share a sampling of some of them in these collections.?

The Best of Warner Bros. 20 Film DVD Collections will be released throughout the year in five separate sets. Each features a gem-packed collection of 20 essential movie classics in five major genres: Best Pictures (January), Musicals (February), Romance (April), Comedy (July) and Thrillers (September).

The Best of Warner Bros. Animation Collections will be released throughout the year in three separate animation sets. Each features animation at its best in three key brands Hanna-Barbera (May), Looney Tunes (June) and DC Comics (August).

The Best of Warner Bros. Superman Collection (May) features 9 essential Superman live action television and animated television shows in one collection.

Two New Documentaries to Celebrate Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary

Created specially for this anniversary, Tales from the Warner Bros. Lot is a full-length documentary that features some of Warner Bros.? top talent and executives giving an inside look at the history of the studio. In on-the-lot interviews, stars including Clint Eastwood, Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman, Martin Sheen, along with current and former studio toppers Barry Meyer, Alan Horn, Bob Daly, and Terry Semel, and others, recount personal reflections and anecdotes about their experiences at the studio. Tales from the Warner Bros. Lot was produced by documentarian Gary Khammar (It?s So Audrey! A Style Icon) and producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino).

Now, for the first time, home viewers can take the hugely popular Warner Bros Studio VIP Tour in this new documentary produced exclusively for the 90th Anniversary collections. In The Warner Bros. Lot Tour, an official WB Lot Tour Guide gives guests a ?virtual? tram ride (of what some 200,000 annual visitors experience) ? an extraordinary opportunity to see first-hand where movie magic happens at the world?s busiest motion picture and television studio. Unlike a theme park, the Tour represents a rare and intimate ?behind-the-scenes? look at real Hollywood, winding through back lot streets, sound stages, sets and craft shops.

In a recent press kit released to media outlets, Warner Bros. has outlined its plans to bring four Anniversary Editions to Blu-ray in the coming fiscal year. Classics getting an Anniversary Edition treatment include: Enter the Dragon, The Exorcist, A Christmas Story and The Right Stuff. Each film will celebrate its next milestone anniversary next year, starting with Enter the Dragon in Q2 2013.

No word on what new features, if there are any, will be included.

Have they not dipped enough on Exorcist yet? The other choices are solid though.

Or A Christmas Story...

What they really need to do more of for these movies is what they did for The Goonies or The Ghostbusters commentary. Easily two of the best I've ever watched.

See the original, too depressing Little Shop of Horrors ending | Blastr (http://blastr.com/2012/10/see-the-original-too-depr.php)

I was gonna get this simply because there just isn't enough Rick Moranis in the world anymore...but now I NEED to get this for...

The film version of the Alan Menken and Howard Ashman musical ends with Seymour (Rick Moranis) and Audrey (Ellen Green) falling in love and getting a happy ending after Seymour manages to defeat the bloodthirsty giant plant known as Audrey II. But in the musical, things turned out much worse for the young lovers. Audrey II eats Audrey, then Seymour, and after Audrey II clippings become a nationwide craze the evil plant returns at full strength to devour New York with her offspring. It's awesome if you're a monster movie fan, but not so great if you were hoping for that perfect love-story sendoff.

Summer's Surprise Hit Ted Will Be Even More Raunchy On Blu-ray In December - CinemaBlend.com (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Summer-Surprise-Hit-Ted-Even-More-Raunchy-Blu-ray-December-33478.html)

The Blu-ray and DVD will come with all of the goodies I personally like to see with a comedic releases. First, the disc will come with an Unrated Version of the film, as well as a gag reel, which tend to be the best parts of comedy Blu-rays. I’m usually less excited about the commentary and “Making of” segments with comedies, but since Ted is CGI’d into the flick, those could be pretty interesting. If you spring for the Blu-ray, you’ll also get deleted scenes and alternate takes, as well as the “Teddy Bear Scuffle,” which will highlight the fight scene in the film.

Ted DVD Bonus Features
Ted Unrated Version
Gag Reel
“Ted - The Making Of”
Commentary with Director Seth MacFarlane, co-writer Alec Sulkin and star Mark Wahlberg
Ted Bonus Features Blu-ray
All the DVD extras
Deleted Scenes
Alternate Takes
“Teddy Bear Scuffle”
UltraViolet
pocket BLU App
Advanced Remote Control
