Ok...Adgy and I have had sort of discussions regarding not starting threads for every oddity that comes about. We both want to keep a wholesale purge from happening again. So, in an effort to keep to that, while still posting every interesting pseudo-project that we read about...I offer up this thread, basically a Miscellaneous or, like on Jeopardy, PotPourri thread. If you like reading about stuff in it's infancy...check here, or, if you are like Doc Naysay...don't.

So, here goes.

Mitch Glazer And Mr. Beaks Discuss The Vicissitudes Of PASSION PLAY (And A Forgotten Collaboration With Michael O'Donoghue)!

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49727)

Mitch Glazer's PASSION PLAY is a labor of love two decades in the making, a go-for-broke piece of magical realism that brings together Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray and Megan Fox as, respectively, a washed-up jazz trumpeter, a murderously possessive mobster, and a beautiful carnival freak with big feathery wings sprouting out of her back. It's certainly one of the more least-expected love triangles you'll ever encounter. Add in some gorgeous neo-noir cinematography from the great Christopher Doyle, and you've got a one-of-a-kind movie to which attention must be paid.

This is Glazer's first go as a director, and it's a long way from the kind of caustic, pitch-black comedy he once wrote with the late Michael O'Donoghue. PASSION PLAY is a fearlessly sincere film about the redemptive power of love; from its forthright title to the writ-large symbolism of Fox's angelic character, the movie gives you no choice but to embrace its delirious romanticism. It's got the wild earnestness of a Sam Shepard work, only not quite as savage and far less ambiguous; Glazer knows precisely what he wants you to feel by the end of the movie, and it's to his credit that he makes the climactic big gesture in an attempt to summon those emotions. Budget limitations aside (which mostly impact the quality of the CGI), this is undoubtedly the movie Glazer set out to make.

That Glazer managed to complete the film without much of a hassle seems a minor miracle; more experienced directors have been steamrolled by the intimidating likes of Rourke and Murray. Fortunately, Glazer has a long history with both actors: he attended the same high school as Rourke, and came up through the late-'70s/early-'80s comedy ranks with Murray. There's a mutual trust here, and it's especially apparent when Rourke and Murray share the screen. Surprisingly, Murray mostly dominates Rourke in their scenes together; it's reminiscent of the dynamic from John McNaughton's MAD DOG AND GLORY - only unlike De Niro, Rourke has the bulk to bump back if he so chooses. But he allows himself to be ground down; Rourke's as vulnerable here as he was in THE WRESTLER, and his sadness brings out a real performance from Fox (who, as she showed in the unjustly maligned JENNIFER'S BODY, is capable of more than mere summer-movie adornment).

How many things can you sticky though...I am loathe to speak for Adgy, but I think what we have both been doing is to throw as much stuff at the wall and what works...works, what doesn't...gets relegated to the back pages. It's a work in progress. The best thing in my opinion, is that a ton more folks are on this forum and are taking up the torch. Hey, we get pruned back, it just means that a crapload of information/participation is going on, and that's a great thing.

SEINFELD Writer David Mandel to Write FLETCH Reboot (http://collider.com/fletch-remake-david-mandel/91920/)

Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter David Mandel to write the reboot of Fletch. As we reported back in February, Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Gregory Mcdonald?s mystery novels for what they?re calling not a remake but a ?re-imagining?, which is studio-speak for remake. However, since two of the Fletch novels were previously adapted (1985?s Fletch and 1989?s Fletch Lives, both starring Chevy Chase as the eponymous reporter), I?ll call it a reboot. But whatever you want to call it, Warner Bros. says that this new version ?will be a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies.?

Per THR, ?The 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives.? Since I?ve never read any of the Fletch novels, I don?t know if Mandel?s the right guy for the job, but his credits include Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sacha Baron Cohen?s upcoming comedy The Dictator, and the underrated EuroTrip (that?s right: I?ll go to bat for EuroTrip), so I think Warners at least has a talented writer on board. The project is a high-priority for the studio and they?re looking at it as a vehicle for an A-list comedy star. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the first novel.

They have been trying to get this going forever...Kevin Smith with Jason Lee was the best chance for this...I am not a huge Chevy Chase fan, but , damn if those flicks aren't still REALLY good. I would love to see Norm McDonald as Fletch...won't happen.

THIS MUST BE THE PLACE Movie Images Clip (http://collider.com/this-must-be-the-place-movie-image-clip/91902/)

YouTube - ‪THIS MUST BE THE PLACE - HD-Teaser - Paolo Sorrentino‬‏

Watching the first clip from the upcoming drama This Must Be the Place, I can?t help but think that star Sean Penn was re-watching I Am Sam and though to himself, ?Yeah, I can top that.? So instead of going full-retard, Penn is going full old-rock-star parody. We?ve already seen his Robert Smith-inspired attire, but wait until you hear how Penn decides to deliver dialogue. It sounds like a cross between a nerdy teenager and present-day Ozzy Osbourne. It?s awful and I can?t tell if co-star Frances McDormand is embarrassed or just trying really hard not to laugh.

Oh, for those that don?t know about the plot, it?s about an aged rock star who decides to follow in his late father?s footsteps and become a Nazi hunter. I?m not making that up. Hit the jump to check out new images from the film along with the glorious clip. This Must Be the Place also stars newcomer Eve Newsome as a gothic-punk music fan who is close friends with Penn?s character, Cheyenne.

i think it's a great idea. the only thing i'm hesitant about is back when you'd start a new thread, if the thread title caught my eye, i'd click. i suppose i could make an effort to check in on the thread every now and then to see what new things are going on in the general media world. it would definitely be better than the alternative of the media forum being so backed up that the active threads get pruned. still pretty bummed the vinyl thread and all its sweet photos, links, etc. got snipped. but oh well, we've still got an active discourse with new stuff going on in version 2. :)

John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell Making ‘Step Brothers’ Rap Album, Possibly a Sequel (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/john-c-reilly-and-will-ferrell-making-step-brothers-rap-album-possibly-a-sequel.php)

Talk turned to the modern cult comedy favorite Step Brothers when John C. Reilly recently spoke to MTV cameras over in Cannes. In the interview Reilly confirms that there is indeed work being done on a rap album written and performed by he and Ferrell’s fictional characters Brennan Huff and Dale Doback. Reilly says, “We have not recorded the album yet, but we’ve begun to write it … Hopefully we’re going to come [back to Cannes] and premiere the record on a boat, on a yacht.” While the idea of French people having to bear witness to Reilly and Ferrell performing “Boats and Hoes” live is pretty dang hysterical, I don’t know if we really need an entire album of ironic rap songs released outside of the context of any film work. Will anybody really take the time to listen to this? And has anybody asked Weird Al for his approval?

What I’m more interested in is the possibility for a sequel to Step Brothers, and Reilly indicates that this might be exactly where the rap album will lead. “That was the idea for the album,” he said. “Let’s get the band back together. We’ll do this record, and that’ll be a way to start talking about the movie again.” He wouldn’t want to do a sequel just for the sake of cashing in again, though. It would have to be for the right reasons.

Boborci Says Initial Prep Work For STAR TREK Sequel Is Based On 70+ Page Outline - Full Script Pending Abrams' Feedback!!

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49750)

Producer/scripter Roberto Orci - known to Talkbackers 'round these here parts as 'Boborci' - offered TrekMovie an update regarding the status of the script for the TREK sequel.

Here's a slightly abridged quote from Orci, which appeared TrekMovie message boards...

Just been waiting for JJ to be free to really decide if he likes the story and hear his suggestions before we finish the script. Once he says go, we?ll have it in no time. Meanwhile, our outline is detailed enough (70+ pages!) to do some prep :)

Orci's follow e-mail to TrekMovie continues the thought...

In the meetings we?ve had with JJ, he?s already given us amazing input and ideas, and that?s been while he?s been up to his eyeballs in Super 8.

Although J.J. Abrams has not formally committed to direct the long-in-development STAR TREK sequel, it's widely presumed he will do so. Abrams has recently indicated that more formal announcements regarding the project should be coming soon.

Boobytrap will NOT be amused.

Rumor: Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to Reunite for THE COMEDIAN? (http://collider.com/martin-scorsese-robert-de-niro-the-comedian/92309/)

Let?s keep this one in the rumor mill for now, but it?s possible that Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro could reunite for The Comedian. Showbiz411 reports that producer Art Linson co-wrote a script with comedian Jeffrey Ross about an insult comic who?s described as a cross between Don Rickles and Joan River. According to Showbiz411, Linson would like Scorsese to direct. I bet he would. I bet producers the world over would like Scorsese to direct their movie as well. If the project were to move forward (and that?s a big ?If?), it would draw an obvious comparison to Scorsese and De Niro?s 1982 film The King of Comedy, even though the characters sound very different.

The reason this all sounds slightly dubious (or at least incredibly hopeful on the part of Linson) is that Scorsese has a wealth of other projects he could choose.

Yeah, that's Seth Rogen and Jospeh-Gordon Levitt.

50/50 (originally titled I’m With Cancer) is an autobiographical story based on the experiences of Will Reiser, a producer on HBO’s Da Ali G Show and VH1′s Best Week Ever. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Adam, a 27-year-old who is diagnosed with cancer, and his sometimes funny “struggle to beat the disease.” The film, funded with Summit Entertainment’s giant pile of Twilight money, co-stars Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston. 50/50 won’t hit theaters until September 30th 2011, probably after a film festival run. We should see a trailer next week.

One Simple Thing Theater Owners Are Doing to Ruin Your Watching Experience | Film School Rejects (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/one-simple-3d-thing-movie-theaters-owners-are-doing-to-ruin-your-watching-experience.php)

Now Boston.com has a truly disheartening story about theater managers not even bothering to switch out lenses between 3D and 2D films. The result? That 2D movie you saved money on by refusing the 3D up-charge is 50% darker than it should be. Read the entire article for the full take (and definitely listen to that Reject Radio episode for more illumination), but this seems indicative of a larger problem going on in movie theaters ? a lack of incentive to make anything enjoyable.

Audiences are coming for the movie, and theaters are delivering little else in the way of enticement. It?s no wonder that ticket sales are dropping. With the transition from reels to digital projectors, gone is the knowledge that came with understanding how the projection process really works. It took serious understanding to be behind the glass, but now it requires pushing a few buttons and reading an Archie comic.

That?s why, when traditional reels are used, the result is usually a broken frame (or reels put together in the wrong order, which actually happened to Neil, Luke Mullen and I when we saw Gamer). It?s also apparently part of the reason why some aren?t interested in simply replacing a lens.

Either that or its sheer laziness. Or, and I hate to even speculate this, a sly con from theaters who want to punish 2D movie-goers for not buying 3D. (But why would they when ticket sales matter so little to their bottom line?)

Ahoy Matey: Fox Eyes Pirate Limited Series From Ridley And Tony Scott – Deadline.com (http://www.deadline.com/2011/05/ahoy-matey-fox-eyes-pirate-limited-series-from-ridley-and-tony-scott/)

Based on historical events, Pyrates is described as a gritty portrayal of the men and women who pulled off the largest heist on pirate history -- the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628 -- sparking the golden age of piracy, a time when there was greater honor amongst thieves than those who hunted them. Ensemble is exploring an international co-production model for the project and is scouting potential locations for the production, including the Caribbean and Australia. The Constance Marks film, which will be released theatrically this year by Submarine to qualify for Oscar consideration, has been sold to New Video for DVD and digital rights (via its Docurama Films label) and ITVS & Independent Lens for the first TV window.

At the request of Mr. Steibel, who died in 2002, Mr. Kastle sifted through the trial records at the Bronx County Courthouse. Then, after studying scripts by Fellini, Pasolini and Truffaut, he wrote a screenplay.

Both men envisioned the film as a cinematic rebuttal to “Bonnie and Clyde.” “I was revolted by that movie,” Mr. Kastle said in an interview for the 2003 Criterion Collection reissue of his film on DVD. “I didn’t want to show beautiful shots of beautiful people.”

Apparently, Scorsese was originally hired to direct it.

History Announces THE HATFIIELDS AND THE MCCOYS Miniseries and THE BIBLE Docudrama (http://collider.com/history-the-hatfields-and-the-mccoys-the-bible/92794/)

History (formerly known as The History Channel) announced two high profile projects today. The first, The Hatfield and the McCoys, centers on the infamous 19th-century family feud. Kevin Costner will star as ?Devil? Anse Hatfield and co-produce with Leslie Greif. The press release claims the 2012 premiere will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the feud, but I?m not sure how they determine the anniversary for a multidecade feud that was initiated 146 years ago. Brad Pitt, Robert Duvall, and Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper were linked to a separate Hatfield/McCoy movie over a year ago, with the caveat that it will happen ?if and when Pitt decides to clear a place in his schedule.? I imagine the Costner project will dissuade Pitt from searching too hard for that hole.

Additionally, History is developing a docudrama series with producer Mark Burnett (Survivor). The network promises all the greatest hits: Noah?s Ark, the Exodus from Egypt, Daniel and the Lion?s Den, and of course, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The press release highlights the ?state-of-the-art computer-generated imagery (CGI),? which is absolutely noteworthy in 2011. The 10-hour series will air in five parts in 2013.

This sounds like fun.

With comparisons being drawn to “The Dirty Dozen,” the “story follows a spy and 20 Union soldiers in disguise who board a train in Georgia in order to pull off a heist that could bring a quick end to the Civil War.” The film is based on the true account of the Great Locomotive Chase in which the Union soliders took over a train, and proceeded run it ragged on the Western & Atlantic Railroad tracks doing extensive damage and cutting Confederate communication down by clipping telegraph wires. This story also served as the inspiration for Buster Keaton‘s landmark “The General.”

That's a hella funny article. Yeah Neverending Story is full of sadness...oof the Rock guy with his whole 'you would think these hands could...' scene. And till this point I never had any cause to see Follow That Bird, but I may have to now. And the Hugga Bunch...hey pal, thanks for dredging that suppressed memory up. Good stuff.:15smile:

The scene in Neverending Story where the horse dies is probably the single most traumatic moment of my entire childhood.

And I watched that movie multiple times.

i've watched a few of those. disney movies are pretty harsh, too. i mean bambi's mom gets killed? cinderella gets treated like s*** by her stepmother and stepsisters? snow white's stepmom wants to kill her? dumbo??? those are GREAT storylines for children! but honestly, i think movies like these have a way of introducing the real world to kids in a language they can understand and at times, empathize with.

Is Thomas Jane leaving Walter Hill's HEADSHOT?
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49802)

A very well-placed source says the word in the agency world is that the Walter Hill-directed HEADSHOT, a hitman flick starring Sylvester Stallone, might be losing its co-lead, Thomas Jane.

What I hear is that while Stallone and Hill like Jane for the part (they must since he?s cast already), the film is now with Warner Bros? Dark Castle and the studio wants Jane replaced with someone more ?ethnic? in order to meet an in-house formula-for-success. The word is that Jane's still the favorite for Hill and Stallone, but the studio is insistent on getting a minority in the role.

I?m all for diversity in films, but it?d be a shame if Jane was booted against the wishes of the creative team all in order for the executive branch to meet some pre-determined criteria for success.

I haven?t read the script, but I do know I like the idea of Stallone and Jane on screen together. Stallone would be an older hitman and Jane a New York Cop that have to team up over the course of the film. That feels like an ?80s gritty buddy movie with those two, especially with the great Walter Hill directing.

This...would suck. I have been loving this idea, and Thomas Jane leaving would really put a damper on that. I don't think that guy gets enough of love. And Hell, Walter Hill basically coming out of retirement...****ing bean counters.

Paul Schneider to Star in Broken Lizard’s THE BABY MAKER; Sienna Miller Reportedly Joins FREAKY DEAKY (http://collider.com/paul-schneider-baby-maker-sienna-miller-freaky-deaky/93359/)

We have a couple quick casting notes to report. First up, Paul Schneider (Lars and the Real Girl) will star in Broken Lizard’s new movie The Baby Maker. While Broken Lizard will star and the troupe’s Jay Chandrasekhar will direct, the script was penned by Ice Age: The Meltdown writers Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow. Per Variety, “Story follows a married couple who fail to conceive after months of trying, prompting the husband to enlist his friends’ help to rob a Pasadena sperm bank, where he made a deposit as a young man. All of the Broken Lizard members are expected to co-star, with Kevin Heffernan playing the protag’s crazy best friend, who hooks him up with an Estonian master thief, played by Chandrasekhar. Other Broken Lizard members include Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.”

Why the sperm bank wouldn’t simply give him back his own seed is beyond me. I’m also surprised that sperm keeps for that long. Logistics aside, Schneider is terrific actor and it will be interesting to see him play against the Broken Lizard gang.

wow...just noticed this. Oofa the torment he must have endured.

Buffy Alums vs. Katee Sackhoff’s Sexy Evil Genius | BeyondHollywood.com (http://www.beyondhollywood.com/buffy-alums-vs-katee-sackhoffs-sexy-evil-genius/)

dd two more names to the awesome sounding Katee Sackhoff indie drama (though it sounds more like a black comedy to me) “Sexy Evil Genius”. “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” co-stars Seth Green and Michelle Trachtenberg have joined the cast of the Shawn Piller-directed movie, which will star Sackhoff, along with Billy Baldwin and Harold Perrineau Jr.

The plot goes thusly:

Genius centers on a group of strangers brought together in a downtown Los Angeles bar by their mutual ex-girlfriend (Sackhoff). The woman is mysterious about her intentions, but by the night’s end, according to the movie’s makers, revenge will be had, romance kindled and the wronged woman will have delivered on her reputation as the sexy evil genius at the center of all their lives.

This project had me at Katee Sackhoff, but this casting announcement don't hurt, either. :)

Focus Features Sets TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY for November 18th (http://collider.com/tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-release-date/94065/)

If you were wondering whether or not Tomas Alfredson?s adaptation of John Le Carre?s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was being set up for an awards run, you now have your answer. Variety reports that Focus Features has set the spy thriller for November 18th. The story centers on ?George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a veteran spy pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet agent in MI6.? Oldman is already receiving early buzz on his performance and he?s bolstered by a strong supporting cast that includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciar?n Hinds, Stephen Graham, and Benedict Cumberbatch. I wouldn?t be surprised to see the film premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, but nothing has been announced on that front.

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson to Star in FREAKY DEAKY (http://collider.com/matt-dillon-brendan-fraser-craig-robinson-freaky-deaky/94390/)

A trio of actors have signed on for Charles Matthau?s (The Grass Harp) adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Freaky Deaky. Variety reports that Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will star in the Hollywood-centered crime flick. Dillon will star as an LAPD bomb squad officer who happens upon a plot hatched by two hippies who plan to scam a movie mogul using their bomb-making skills. Fraser plays a former activist who now puts his bomb-knowledge to work as a Hollywood pyrotechnics and demolition expert, and Robinson is poised to play a former Black Panther who now serves as the assistant to Fraser?s character.

In pitch-perfect casting, William H. Macy is already set to star as the alcoholic Hollywood mogul that the two hippie characters attempt to scam. The other day we heard that Sienna Miller may be starring in the film, but she wasn?t mentioned in Variety?s report today. Matthau will direct, and adapted Leonard?s novel himself. The film version will take place in 1974 instead of Leonard?s late 80?s setting of the book. While Fraser is used to starring in what can mildly be described as horse**** as of late, the other actors involved sound promising. It?ll be interesting to see who Matthau gets to fill out the rest of his cast. Production is set to start this summer in Michigan. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of Leonard?s book.

I loves me some Craig Robinson!

Olivia Wilde Finds The Words To Describe Bradley Cooper | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/55461/olivia-wilde-finds-the-words-to-describe-bradley-cooper/)

It?s clear every news story this week will feature Bradley Cooper in some way. Just grin and bear it, guys.

Besides, this one is actually about Olivia Wilde, and how she decided to add another notch on her Handsome Costar Belt. According to a press release from Benaroya Pictures, Wilde Zoe Saldana, Ben Barnes, John Hannah, J.K. Simmons, and Nora Arnezeder have joined Cooper, Jeremy Irons and Dennis Quaid in the indie thriller, The Words.

The plot description is a little thin. It centers on an author (Cooper) who ?at the peak of his literary success, discovers the price he must pay for stealing another man?s work.? It feels a bit Limitlessesque, doesn?t it? It immediately makes me think it will rely heavily on his tried-and-true smug persona, but I suppose that really depends on whether this character consciously plagiarized or not. Maybe this is Secret Window territory. I?m also curious why such a character-centric story boasts such a large cast. The press release doesn?t give any indication as to who Wilde and Company will be playing, but I think Love Interest is probably her enviable role. (So enviable?)

The Words will be the directorial debut of Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal of Tron: Legacy (let?s not hold it against them for now), and starts shooting this month in Montreal.

He's apparently putting the wood to her in real life too...NOW you guys wanna punch him in the face, right?

STEADY LEAK: 3-DUDE | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/54486/steady-leak-3-dude/)

3-D is a tool that has been used wantonly and frivolously by many. Studio executives who are motivated by fear have pulled the trigger on 3-D movies no one needed and we’ve all seen the side effects of bad judgment calls. Bad post conversion. Poor marriages of medium and material. Films that were 3-D in name alone.

That’s why the Coen Bros. need to make a 3-D movie. And they should start by releasing a painstaking version of The Big Lebowski in 3-D. If ever a film would benefit from the medium, it’d be The Big Lebowski. Or Moulin Rouge. Or Enter the Void. Or The Shining. People need to be schooled that not only is the tool a perfectly viable one but it’s also a way to get new facets from the familiar. The offer a new sort of revival experience. This isn’t the coloration of seminal B&W films and this isn’t the rape of art. It’s enhancing the experience.

We are a culture who will watch a blu-ray with a mode enabled that breaks the action and offers documentaries behind the scenes. We are a culture who watches movies while kids run past in the living room or on our portable device while being bounced on a train. Let’s not act like it’s still a pure experience. How many have witnessed the processed look some HD television sets showcase with their Trumotion or other software tweaks to “enhance” the experience? Tech moves. It’s alive. So is our favorite art medium.

The Big Lebowski in 3-D. Think about it. Think about seeing that at midnight on a Friday night in a state of the art theater with your favorite people. Think about seeing it in a cinema that sells food and liquor. White Russians and a great movie that has already transcended the medium to an extent. That rug’s patterns, those dream sequences, those human ash remains. The possibilities are limitless. The haters of 3-D are right when they say it’s not being used right. They’re right to hate it if they watch it in a theater with the wrong equipment.

But in the right environment with the right marriage of material and tech it could be legendary.

The Big Lebowski 3-D. It could be a serious catalyst for great things.

The Academy Tweaks Oscar Rules; Best Picture Nominees to Range from 5 to 10 (http://collider.com/oscar-best-picture-nomination-changes/96553/)

Here?s the press release:

Beverly Hills, CA (June 14, 2011) ? The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday (6/14) to add a new twist to the 2011 Best Picture competition, and a new element of surprise to its annual nominations announcement. The Board voted to institute a system that will now produce anywhere between five and 10 nominees in the category. That number won?t be announced until the Best Picture nominees themselves are revealed at the January nominations announcement.

?With the help of PricewaterhouseCoopers, we?ve been looking not just at what happened over the past two years, but at what would have happened if we had been selecting 10 nominees for the past 10 years,? explained Academy President Tom Sherak, who noted that it was retiring Academy executive director Bruce Davis who recommended the change first to Sherak and incoming CEO Dawn Hudson and then to the governors.

During the period studied, the average percentage of first place votes received by the top vote-getting movie was 20.5. After much analysis by Academy officials, it was determined that 5% of first place votes should be the minimum in order to receive a nomination, resulting in a slate of anywhere from five to 10 movies.

?In studying the data, what stood out was that Academy members had regularly shown a strong admiration for more than five movies,? said Davis. ?A Best Picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit. If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honor in a given year, we shouldn?t feel an obligation to round out the number.?

If this system had been in effect from 2001 to 2008 (before the expansion to a slate of 10), there would have been years that yielded 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 nominees.

The final round of voting for Best Picture will continue to employ the preferential system, regardless of the number of nominees, to ensure that the winning picture has the endorsement of more than half of the voters.

Other rules changes approved by the Board include:

In the animated feature film category, the need for the Board to vote to ?activate? the category each year was eliminated, though a minimum number of eligible releases ? eight ? is still required for a competitive category. Additionally, the short films and feature animation branch recommended, and the Board approved, refinements to the number of possible nominees in the Animated Feature category. In any year in which eight to 12 animated features are released, either two or three of them may be nominated. When 13 to 15 films are released, a maximum of four may be nominated, and when 16 or more animated features are released, a maximum of five may be nominated.

In the visual effects category, the ?bakeoff? at which the nominees are determined will expand from seven to 10 contenders. The increase in the number of participants is related to a change made last year in which the number of films nominated in the visual effects category was increased from three to five.

Previously, the Board approved changes to the documentary feature and documentary short category rules that now put those categories? eligibility periods in line with the calendar year and thus with most other awards categories. The change means that for the 84th Awards cycle only, the eligibility period is more than 12 months; it is from September 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

Other modifications of the 84th Academy Awards rules include normal date changes and minor ?housekeeping? changes.

Gallery 1988 opened in Los Angeles in 2004 and quickly earned a unique reputation. Rather than catering to the traditional art crowd, the gallery specializes in art inspired by pop culture. It’s the sort of thing that might be dismissed as fan art were it not for the fact that the work is so impressive that it transcends the label. The most successful series to emerge out of Gallery 1988 has easily been Crazy 4 Cult, an ongoing series of art inspired by cult movies like Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, Blue Velvet, The Goonies, They Live, and The Big Lebowski. With a rather incredible book compilation Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art having just hit shelves, Collider got the chance to speak with Gallery 1988 founder Jensen Carp about the origins, reception, and future of the ongoing series. Hit the jump for all the juicy info nuggets.

In an interview with Screen Junkies promoting his latest, “Bloodrayne: The Third Reich,” Boll was asked, somewhat randomly, his thoughts on “The Tree of Life.” While this is a lot like asking Justin Bieber his views on abortion, Boll was more than prepared. “The opening of that movie was really good but then he completely lost it,” offers Boll, who holds a doctorate in English. “I think ‘Tree of Life’ is a piece of ****. Totally, and I think Sean Penn is ridiculous in it, like walking around in the elevator. It’s nothing. This is the thing. It’s so overrated because it’s Terrence Malick.”

Additionally, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan) are set to star in the film adaptation of the book and stageplay Jewtopia. The story centers on two childhood best friends who reunite as adults when one needs the other to help him pretend to be Jewish in order to woo a woman. Variety reports that Sergei will play the wannabe-Jew, while Hewitt will take on the role of the woman he’s in love with (she’s still appealing, right?) The tone is likened to Wedding Crashers and My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bryan Fogel is directing from a cript he co-wrote with Sam Wolfson.

‘Freaky Deaky’ Loses Its Entire Cast, Gains Crispin Glover | Film School Rejects (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/freaky-deaky-loses-its-entire-cast-gains-crispin-glover.php)
Charles Matthau?s upcoming adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Freaky Deaky was all set to be a star studded, A-list affair. First, it scooped up William H, Macy in a starring role. Solid, sturdy, that?s a good choice. Then it began filling out the ranks of its cast with big names put in supporting roles. Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Craig Robinson, they were all on board, and it was looking like this could end up being a big hit like one of Leonard?s other page to screen adaptations, Get Shorty. But then, suddenly, the entire cast dropped out of the pic and were recast with names that are more, uh? B-list. Uh-oh, that can?t be a good sign.

Gone are Dillon, Fraser, and Robinson in the supporting roles; in are Billy Burke, Michael Jai White, Bill Duke, and Christian Slater. Gone is William H. Macy in the starring role; in is Crispin Glover as his replacement. And now there?s word that Tom Arnold is in negotiations to play the Glover character?s brother. Hmm, Christian Slater, Crispin Glover, and Tom Arnold in the same movie? Plus the grizzled face of Bill Duke?

Even today you?re still fascinated by the mystery of what happened to Davey. Still feel his pain as to the strange new world he comes back to. And still feel nice for the brotherly bond he still shares with Jeff. These things ? the core of the movie ? all still work. A younger person today probably wouldn?t bask glorious nostalgia of the Pee Wee voice, McDonald?s jokes and MTV references. But the early CG effects still look pretty damn good and it?s hard not to relate to a boy scared to talk to a girl.

Looking at Flight of the Navigator through modern eyes, it?s almost impossible to not think of a sequel. It would have been so easy. What happens in eight years time when Davey?s other self meets a younger self that ended up going to Phalon on the ship? The idea seems like a slam dunk. But ? in 1986, Disney wasn?t too concerned with sequalizing films that only became part of the public conscious when they hit the home market. They were too worried about rejuvenating the animation division. A decision that worked out pretty well for them. Still, it?s fun to dream.

?Flight of the Navigator? Was Released 25 Years Ago Today (http://www.slashfilm.com/flight-navigator-released-25-years-today/)

Nick Nadel, FilmCritic.com (7/5/11)

It was originally planned as a trilogy.

Stevens and the screenwriters envisioned a trilogy in keeping with the "Commander Cody" serials that inspired the comic. Disney had high hopes for The Rocketeer as the next big blockbuster franchise as well, cross-promoting the film with fast-food tie-ins and a Super Nintendo game. Unfortunately, The Rocketeer opened during a crowded summer (its competition included the hits Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and City Slickers) and proved to be a box office disaster. As Johnston explained at the 20th anniversary screening, "There was a lot of talk of a sequel on June 20th, 1991, but there wasn't any on the 22nd."
...

A sequel could be on the way.

While disappointing box office killed any potential for a sequel, that hasn't stopped Johnstonrocketeer-blastoff-125.jpg from discussing the possibility of a return to the world of The Rocketeer. In a recent interview (http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/06/29/joe-johnston-would-love-to-do-a-rocketeer-sequel/#content) with FilmJournal, Johnston spoke of the "great fun" he had on the film and expressed a desire to "re-explore Cliff Secord's world." And the timing couldn't be better. A recent deluxe hardcover reissue of the comic-book has brought Dave Stevens's (who sadly passed away in 2008 after a long battle with leukemia) creation to a new generation, while Captain America: The First Avenger could usher in a return of big screen pulp comic-book adventures. At 20, it looks like The Rocketeer may fly again.

Marilyn Manson, A Shia LaBeouf Short-Film, and NSFW Performance Art | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/65630/marilyn-manson-a-shia-labeouf-short-film-and-nsfw-performance-art/)

So this is weird. Leave it to Marilyn Manson to end up making some unusual documentary/trailer/music-video/short-film that it difficult to explain, and leave it to Shia LaBeouf to unexpectedly be at the center of it.

This first flashed on gossip radar two nights ago at the out-of-nowhere film?s premiere, where Manson caught eyeballs because of his date, Narcissister. The female performance artist is most famous for making it onto America?s Got Talent briefly but she?s got a history of sexually-driven, award-winning performance art (some of which resembles George Clooney?s device in Burn After Reading). At the premiere the other night. she showed up in her usual plastic Barbie-style mask and wig, but in a dress that didn?t do much to cover her business (see below, if you dare).

What?s even more unusual than that though, is that the event they were attending (along with celebrities like Jon Hamm) was for a project called Born Villain, which is a book and DVD collaboration between Manson and Shia LaBeouf that covers LA street art and the production of Manson?s next album. The collaboration sprung from Manson?s interest in a short film LaBeouf made for Kid Cudi (who is apparently into unusual music videos as a habit), and apparently the interesting time the two spent together around LA.

Now that the film has screened, the pair have announced a limited edition DVD/Book release that you can pre-order and in turn be invited to a 18-And-Up screening and book-signing on September 1st. There?s only 150 of these things, so if you?re interested and in LA, I?d hop on it. There?s not much for detail about the whole thing, save for a pair of overwrought statements from the two?

?Locals Rule. I think. Odd, living in L.A all my life and taking for granted my environment, my city. But one night, just a few months ago, I bumped into Marilyn Manson at one of my locals and together we crawled the city a bit; where he lived, where I lived, where we ate and drank and were we have been entertained. We traveled the roads to those places on streets that had become too familiar. And then I reflected back on that brief journey and traced that trip (with photographs). I connected buildings and streets, freeways, storefronts and trees with a BORN VILLAIN at my side. Here it is but with a little mood music to set my mood.?

?Shia LaBeouf

?Shia is in some ways an art rapist. He doesn?t take no for an answer. He has a vision that develops rapidly like a virus, and overwhelms you. Not since Hitler has there been such propaganda for something. This time it was my face??

? Marilyn Manson

Vamp film flops so bad investors call it a scam and sue for $22M | Blastr (http://blastr.com/2012/06/vamp-film-flops-so-bad-in.php)

Movies flop all the time, it's just part of life. But one recent vampire semi-spoof flopped so bad the financiers are actually suing the film's creators to get their money back, claiming the movie was so bad it constituted a scam.

The 2009 film Transylmania, one of the few in existence to literally have a 0% rating on critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, cost financiers $22 million to make and netted less than $400,000 at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, the film holds the crown as having the worst wide release performance ever, averaging $262 per screen, after being released on 1,007 screens.

Filed by Third Eye Capital Corporation and Strative Capital, the plaintiffs call the film a "staggering" fraud, and "one of the greatest box office flops of all time" in the suit. Over several months, the investors ponied up approximately $22 million to directors David and Scott Hillenbrand for various odds and ends allegedly related to the promotion and development of Transylmania, a vampire semi-spoof meant to capitalize on Twilight mania.

Here's a highlight from the suit, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

"Ultimately, Lender learned that the Film was not a 'vampire spoof' poking fun at Twilight or True Blood. Despite all of the representations provided to the contrary, the Film had nothing to do with Twilight or True Blood. As such, all of the projections and financial analyses regarding Twilight and past spoof films were pointless."
Once the film tanked, the financers hired an accounting firm to see what went wrong—which is when they reportedly found evidence of fraud, with the Hillenbrands using the cash to pay for everything from their personal credit cards to outstanding traffic tickets—as opposed to making a good movie.

Ouch.

Funny thing is...there is already a better movie to be made from this article. If they really want to recoup their losses I could totally see some Producers-type riff with the 'filmakers' as severe con men. Lots of room to editorialize in there too and get their shots in towards these folks without incurring slander charges. I am available to consult(hell, I have unpaid parking tickets too).

MoviePass Tries Again With New Movie Ticket Subscription Service Model | /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/moviepass-tries-again-with-new-movie-ticket-subscription-service-model/)

here we go again.

Now MoviePass is relaunching, with the same basic concept, but a different means of bringing it to fruition. The new system still features a monthly subscriber fee ($24.99 – $39.99, depending on location), but now users get a proprietary card and a smartphone app. The app is iOS only for now; Android is forthcoming. The card acts like a prepaid credit card, which means it can be used to purchase a ticket at any theater. The concept is that users use the app to check in at a theater, and purchase their ticket with the MoviePass card. Will the system work this time?

The big problem with the previous version of MoviePass was getting exhibitors to play along. But now theaters get full price for the ticket “purchased” by MoviePass users. So the idea seems to be that the economics of the system rely on more subscribers than will actually use the pass on a regular basis. You’re buying movie insurance, in a manner of speaking. And, obviously, this system is based on the company’s ability to attract and jeep subscribers. IMAX and 3D showings (which feature higher ticket prices) aren’t yet supported, but the basic card + app system is ingenious, and could catch on.

Peter points out one issue that may be found by users in major cities like New York and Los Angeles: with this system there is no way to reserve seats ahead of time, as the use of the card is locked to the app check-in. For those used to taking advantage of reserved seating at theaters in those cities (and others) this system won’t hold much attraction.

Steady Leak: Budweiser, the moral compass | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/115806/steady-leak-budweiser-the-moral-compass/)

Flight had a refreshing approach to liquor and beer in its portrayal of alcoholism: It showed the bottles.

Real bottles, not some dumb made up ****. It’s refreshing to watch a movie and not see every label turned away and see the brands we know portrayed as they ought to be. The bottles are harmless. The brands are beaten over our heads every damn day in advertisements that oftentimes do everything BUT explain the power of the booze. Budweiser, when they aren’t making awful tasting beers, apparently watches movies and gets their panties in a wad. Flight showed their products along the way as it showed a man who made bad decisions with such products and the ramifications of those decisions. In a way, Flight does Budweiser’s work for it. Alcoholism is a disease, but one which heavily factor’s in the individual’s ability to control their impulses. The utopia Budweiser sells in their ads enables alcoholics. It sells them the dream.

So Flight used their products. I think it’s safe to say that no one is going to see this movie and stop buying the products Denzel Washington uses. In fact, it’ll probably make them proud to see their brand on the big screen. When I saw Cutty Sark up there I instantly was reminded how much better the **** I drink is than it. When I saw Budweiser I was reminded I have a case of Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum Aged waiting at home.

Budweiser is insisting that Paramount obscures their product in the film.

What a crock of ****. In fact, if the film helps one person curb their destructive drinking or teaches one person about the severity of the act of risking lives under the influence then it’s safe to say Budweiser ought to be thanking the makers of the film. It’s not like it’s Van Wilder, and the film is glorifying drunken antics. It’s showing both the allure and reward of booze as well as moderation.Hypocrites.

What I’m saying is that Budweiser can go suck a dick.

Guy attacked by gang that included pair of Oompa-Loompas. Really. | Blastr (http://blastr.com/2013/01/stop-me-if-youve-already.php)

Stop me if you've already heard this one. What do you tell a guy with two black eyes? Nothing a pair of Oompa-Loompas haven't told him twice already, apparently. No, really.

In what may be the weirdest thing you hear today, a man was allegedly assaulted in a Norfolk city center by four people, including two who were, in fact, made up to look like Willy Wonka's singing assistants.

According to police, the 28-year-old was attacked by two people (believed to be men) who had "painted orange faces and dyed green hair." In order to remove any suspicion as to what they were going for, they were also, supposedly, wearing "hooped tops."

There were also two other people, a man and a woman, who were involved in the attack but not in fancy dress, which is a shame, really, because any missed opportunity to wear a purple, velvet coat and an orange top hat is a tragedy in its own right.

The victim, who "suffered cuts to his face, nose and lip, as well as two black eyes," was, according to police reports, "hit on the head, fell to the floor and hit again." It seems unlikely that Hallmark has made a card for this, but had they, we would most certainly send the man (whose surname may or may not be "Slugworth") one with our deepest sympathies.

The attackers, regardless of stature, remain at large.

I'm sorry...but if I were attacked by Oompas I am laughing myself into submission...they can gladly have my wallet simply for the story I will be able to tell for the rest of my life!

Some posts in the Asian film thread got me thinking about some of my favorite experiences with sound and movies.

Dolby Atmos is used for over 45 films this year, compared with 12 last year. I remember last year seeing Brave at El Capitan, because that was one of the few places with Dolby Atmos, and because Brave was the first film released in Atmos.

Likewise, a friend and I once stood in line to see Days of Thunder opening day at the National in Westwood. That was the first film released with digital audio, and the National had a huge screen and the best sound in town. It's not a great movie, but it was a lot of fun and, yes, the sound was well worth it.

I also had to catch Saving Private Ryan at the National. Great mix on a great system resulted in unbelievable sound imaging. You could even track the paths of individual bullets as they whizzed past your head in the opening moments. This was an unforgettable movie experience that should be made easier by Atmos, though I've yet to experience its Atmos equal yet.

jerseydevil
August 14th, 2013, 04:08 PM
Ok, so what I am gathering...Atmos is an event/element specific sound design...a la sensearound???

LetTigerIn
August 14th, 2013, 04:19 PM
I think it's two things.

First, it's more speakers, specifically, overhead speakers that are supposed to help localize sound imaging more precisely. Some are skeptical over this. After all, Saving Private Ryan, as I described had superb imaging on Dolby Digital, albeit on a superior system. Maybe Atmos speaker placement guarantees that same kind of localization even with slightly more standard equipment? I don't know.

Second, and, according to some/many? more importantly, it's part of the mixing process, and this part, whatever it is, allegedly makes it easier for sound mixers to control the localization. So, even if the film is not projected in Atmos, the sound mix should still benefit from the Atmos process.

This is all just my recollection of it from when I looked it up last year, so I hope it's at least fairly accurate. I really do need to get more obsessed again when I get a chance.

I hope these technologies are like video games in that the artists will become more adept at bringing out all the power of the technology as time goes on.

Blood in Your Eye: Why We Need Violent Stories -- Vulture (http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/warren-ellis-essay-why-we-need-violent-stories.html)

Imagine if Mr. Carrey had instead decided to do the press tour for Kick-Ass 2. Imagine if, on every stop on the junket, he’d used this promotional soapbox to talk about real-world violence versus violent fiction. His reticence to appear in support of the film comes from the Newtown shooting event — an event, like all the others, characterized by those left behind saying, “I don’t understand.”

The fact that he didn’t use the opportunity is less a failure of intelligence and imagination than it is a symptom of the way we generally demonize violent acts and violent work. We make them Other, and we just distance ourselves. They are Other, and they didn’t come from us, and we’re just going to stand over there and shake our heads sadly. And, moreover, anyone who gets closer to it in order to experience or understand it must be a freak.

I have mixed feelings about this. While it's sad that the video store era is now officially over, it really couldn't have been more poetic. Blockbuster killed the mom & pop video store so they got what they deserved. Also the, as the author puts it, puritanical attitude as far as racier content. I mourn the death of the concept more than the company. Take heed Best Buy...this is your future.

I was wondering where this dude was from, but I went back to the article, and I noticed it's going to be in Toronto.

I don't mind this practice that much. El Capitan, for example, has been doing this for years and years. The possible difference is that they also hook you up with popcorn and a drink for your extra bucks. And the popcorn comes in a collectible, reusable tub that is generally movie-specific. It was even better when they also had their app. Then, you not only go all that but also a free premium gift. I got a Brave poster in a really nice bag out of that as well as one of my all-time favorite movie premiums: a hero medal from Wreck-It Ralph. I also think cinemas that decide to go this route should also provide comfier chairs for the extra cost, but I don't expect that to happen.

BTW, the chairs at the Chinese IMAX are great!

I have to try that Chinese Imax again. Saw Gravity there and I wasn't very impressed, may have been the movie though. Yeah, the ElCapitan is kind of a different animal entirely. That's a boutique theater and while I like the idea of the premiums and popcorn to offset the additional charges, it sets a bad precedent. They compare to the airlines...well, I am sure that whatever point they started at was probably a minor inconvenience and now it's gotten so bad that they probably will start a meter running the minute you step on the airplane and charge you like taxicabs at this point. I am not a fan of select-a-seat at theaters...I like coming in early and trying out the seat before you commit to it(also it encourages being late and sitting while the previews/movie has started). But that is something I have had to accept and it has caused me basically to frequent the same theaters where I have previous knowledge of my favorite seats. I think the general theaters having staggered pricing is really a slippery slope. And where does it stop? I LOVE aisle seats for the extra leg room. So do a lot of people. You raise the price on the center seats and all it really does is give them the right to raise prices all around. Theaters are scrambling. Instead of talking raised prices they should be lowering, but I will settle for a freeze.

I can totally relate. When I went to order my Godzilla ticket on Thursday, I noticed there were lots of open seats and also that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was still playing there. Since I was fated to see that some time anyway, I took it as a great chance to see if I liked the auditorium and where the best seats were. Mission accomplished. I actually sat in the same seat both shows.

As far as coming in late, I really miss the "old" days of Arclight, when they would not let you in the show once the movie started, and, yes, I had been shut out there before!

Amazon Preorders for THE LEGO MOVIE and More Have Been Suspended (http://collider.com/amazon-preorders-suspended/)

If you’re hoping to pre-order some of Warner Bros. upcoming films through Amazon, you’re going to be out of luck. The mammoth online retailer is in a contract dispute with Warner Bros. Home Video over the price of their Blu-rays and DVDs. According to The New York Times “The retailer’s refusal to sell the movies is part of its effort to gain leverage in yet another major confrontation with a supplier to become public in recent weeks.” Amazon has already been flexing its muscle with the publishing industry, and its standoff with Hachette Book Group has led the retailer to stop accepting pre-orders and delay shipments on Hatchette’s books.

Hit the jump for more.

As the Times points out, the dispute isn’t the news as much as it’s about “suppliers’ growing resolve to hold the line.” Amazon’s business strategy could seriously backfire since J.K. Rowling‘s new book The Silkworm (written under her pseudonym “Robert Galbraith”) is due out later this month, and Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie will be out on Tuesday. These are major titles, and Amazon is telling customers they may as well go elsewhere. Personally, I was planning to buy The LEGO Movie from Amazon since I have gift cards, but now I’m fine taking my business elsewhere since I love the movie so much.

With regards to Warner Bros., Amazon has also stopped taking pre-orders for 300: Rise of an Empire, Winter’s Tale, and Transcendence. While I’m not feeling the loss on those titles, the larger point remains that Warner Bros. isn’t going to be bullied into playing Amazon’s game, nor should they. The retailer’s situation with books is more complex given their history with publishers and the cultural cache of the product, but when it comes to movies, consumers have far more options. While customers can still own digital copies of Warner titles from Amazon Instant Video, it’s unfortunate that the retailer is shutting off those who want to own the Blu-ray, which contains all the special features as well as a digital copy.

Amazon hasn’t cut off all Warner Bros. titles, and perhaps they’ll keep older titles flowing, but this could be a serious miscalculation on their part. I won’t deny that Amazon has serious power, but they’re not invincible. Not yet, anyway.

Very basically, it's about Amazon trying to dictate the price rather than the publisher/creator of the content. I say it leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it reminds me of the way Wal-Mart does business. I don't pretend to know enough or be passionate enough to take any kind of stand on the issue currently, but... in general, and to a certain extent, the idea of Amazon telling a publisher how much they should charge for something doesn't seem right to me.

I still have my issues with the way Baker treated Rob Bottin and a lot of the people who worked for him, but you cannot deny the man's talent. He worshipped Dick Smith as a kid and not only equalled, but surpassed his idol. Sadly, you will not see a craftsman of his talents ever again simply because CGI is easier. Art has slowly left the movies.

New Cut Of Tom DiCillo's 'Johnny Suede' Starring Brad Pitt Coming To Netflix This Month | The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/new-cut-of-tom-dicillos-johnny-suede-starring-brad-pitt-coming-to-netflix-this-month-20140811)

In March, "Johnny Suede" quietly made its way to Netflix, but there was a problem — Miramax hadn't cleared streaming rights. Understandably, DiCillo was upset. He engaged with Miramax and was allowed to re-edit the movie, dropping a voiceover added by Harvey Weinstein and snipping seven minutes from the movie, bringing it down to 90 minutes total. "It's distilled and improves the film so much," DiCillo told THR. As for Harv, he has no hard feelings and credits DiCillo for finding Pitt before anybody knew about him (the actor was cast before "Thelma & Louise" was released).

I remember this being a pretty terrible movie, but Nick Cave does have a small role in it (that was pretty funny), so I might watch it again, now that it's unedited.

Watch: Get A Blast From The '90s With Trailer For Lifetime’s 'The Unauthorized Saved By The Bell Story' | The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-get-a-blast-from-the-90s-with-trailer-for-lifetimes-the-unauthorized-saved-by-the-bell-story-20140819)

Hold on to your hats! It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Lifetime has posted its first trailer for “The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story,” and it promises all of the ego, attitude and adolescent drama you’d want in a behind the scenes look at the making of the splashy '90s Saturday morning sitcom. Inspired by but not based on the 2009 book “Behind The Bell,” which was written by actor Dustin (Screech) Diamond, it’s unclear how far this will delve into scandal, but the memoir was apparently filled with sex and drugs, inciting the ire of some of his costars.

Diamond serves as a co-producer on the film, which will star Sam Kindseth in the Diamond role, along with Dylan Everett (Mark-Paul Gosselaar / Zack), Alyssa Lynch (Tiffani Thiessen / Kelly), Julian Works (Mario Lopez / Slater), Tiera Skovbye (Elizabeth Berkley / Jessie) and Taylor Russell McKenzie (Lark Voorhies / Lisa). Most of these guys are unknowns, but Everett had a role in “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and Kindseth has appeared in “Shameless.”

Plot Thickens as 900 Writers Battle Amazon - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/08/business/media/plot-thickens-as-900-writers-battle-amazon.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0)

Douglas Preston, who summers in this coastal hamlet, is a best-selling writer — or was, until Amazon decided to discourage readers from buying books from his publisher, Hachette, as a way of pressuring it into giving Amazon a better deal on e-books. So he wrote an open letter to his readers asking them to contact Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive, demanding that Amazon stop using writers as hostages in its negotiations.

The letter, composed in the shack, spread through the literary community. As of earlier this week 909 writers had signed on, including household names like John Grisham and Stephen King. It is scheduled to run as a full-page ad in The New York Times this Sunday.

Amazon, unsettled by the actions of a group that used to be among its biggest fans, is responding by attacking Mr. Preston, calling the 58-year-old thriller writer “entitled” and “an opportunist,” while simultaneously trying to woo him and his fellow dissenters into silence.

It's getting heated.

Chinese Moviegoers Lead the the Way For Texting In Theaters (http://filmschoolrejects.com/news/china-bullet-screens.php)

Oh sweet god in heaven...

Here’s some fun news to read after watching the trailer for Jason Reitman’s latest (see our post from earlier today). And by fun, I’m sure for many of you I should mean infuriating. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chinese cinemas are testing out a new system for interactive moviegoing where the audience is able to contribute to running commentary of the film on screen. The gimmick involves “bullet screens,” which are named such for the way the messages scroll across the movie, and it’s a concept that’s been around for a while online in Japan and more recently China. The new big screen version, though, can currently be found in 50 theaters in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other cities, specifically at showings of the 3D animated feature The Legend of Qin.

Why an animated feature? Because it’s mostly young people who are interested in the danmu craze, as bullet screens are called over there (danmaku in Japan), and because as THR relays from a translated Chinese publication, it’s “for younger viewers who can’t spend five minutes away from their tablet or phone.” That sounds like theater owners are both cashing in on a trend (each text sent to screen costs 10 cents) and perpetuating a new social problem that probably doesn’t need encouragement. This is the same country that, as shown in the new documentary Web Junkie, has enough of an issue with youths being addicted to the Internet that they’ve become the first in the world to label it a clinical disorder. Interestingly enough, the director of The Legend of Qin is supportive of the idea, claiming that “many of the opinions of the viewers are very helpful for filmmakers.
