HORRIBLE BOSSES Trailer and Clip; BAD TEACHER Movie Clip (http://collider.com/horrible-bosses-clip-bad-teacher-movie-clip/94223/)

YouTube - ‪Horrible Bosses - Official Trailer [HD]‬‏

This post contains a few video treats from two of this summer?s R-rated comedies with two-word titles. Firstly, Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Horrible Bosses, led by Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day. There is enough in common with the first trailer that I was initially unable to distinguish between the two, but there is enough new footage to be worth a look. Even better, the new trailer is accompanied by a Horrible Bosses clip (approximately 97% new footage) which features the three stars on a stakeout. Horrible Bosses opens July 8.

To accommodate my theme, Columbia has released the first two clips for Bad Teacher starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, and Jason Segel. I found one of the clips quite funny ? the other less so. Let?s see how well you know me in the comments!

Olivia Munn to Star in THE BABY MAKER (http://collider.com/olivia-munn-the-baby-makers/95052/)

Actress and Daily Show correspondent Olivia Munn has landed the female lead in Broken Lizard?s new indie comedy The Baby Maker. Paul Schneider (Lars and the Real Girl) is set to star, with Broken Lizard?s Jay Chandrasekhar poised to direct. The film centers on a young married couple having trouble conceiving a child. The husband decides to rob a Pasedena sperm bank alongside his friends, in order to retrieve the specimen he donated as a young man. Variety reports that Munn will play the leading female role in the flick, which is presumably Schnieder?s wife.

All of the Broken Lizard members are expected to co-star, with Kevin Heffernan playing the playing Schnieder?s crazy best friend, and Chandrasekhar taking on the role of a master Estonian theif. While I found Beerfest be an underrated comedic gem, Broken Lizard?s last outing, The Slammin? Salmon, left much to be desired. Hopefully they?re back on track with this flick. Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow (Ice Age: The Meltdown) wrote the screenplay, with production set to begin this summer in Los Angeles.

A couple days ago, we showed you an unofficial set photo from the set of Sacha Baron Cohen?s new movie, The Dictator. The film has Cohen once again reteaming with director Larry Charles, but it?s Cohen?s first movie that isn?t based on one of his characters from The Ali G Show. The comedy ?tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. It is inspired by the best selling novel, Zabibah and The King, by Saddam Hussein.?

Here?s the official synopsis:

Ned Rochlin (Rudd) looks for the good in every situation and in everyone, which often puts him at odds with the world around him ? especially his family. Upon being released from jail for a stupid mistake, Ned is kicked off of the organic farm he lives and works on by his ex-girlfriend Janet (Hahn) who also insists on keeping his beloved dog, Willie Nelson. Having nowhere else to go, he turns to his family, three ambitious sisters (Banks, Deschanel, Mortimer) and an overbearing mother (Knight). Ned crashes at each of their homes, in succession, and brings honesty, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives. In other words, he wreaks havoc.

Adam Scott Joins MY MOTHER (http://collider.com/adam-scott-my-mothers-curse-see-girl-run/95848/)

Adam Scott is a scene-stealer. He?s consistently funny and nails every role he takes on, no matter how small, from Step Brothers to NBC?s Parks and Recreation. So I?m happy to report that the actor?s nabbed roles in a couple of upcoming projects. First up, Risky Business reports that Scott has been cast in the comedy My Mother?s Curse alongside Seth Rogen, Barbara Streisand, Yvonne Strahovski and Colin Hanks. Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) directs from a script by Dan Fogelman (Tangled) that centers on an inventor (Rogen) who invites his mother along for a cross-country trip while he attempts to sell his new product and connect with a long lost love. Lorne Michaels, Evan Goldberg and John Goldwyn are producing.

Additionally, Scott has been cast in See Girl Run. Written and directed by Nate Meyer (Pretty in the Face), the film centers on a girl ?who gets caught up in ?what ifs? that cause her to dig back into her romantic history.? Scott is set to play a local hero from her hometown that stayed there to become an artist while pining for his high school love. Scott will next be seen alongside Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel in Our Idiot Brother which opens August 26th.

As the titular 'Idiot Brother', Rudd plays a hippie farmer who gets arrested after selling weed to an officer in uniform. When he gets out, he goes back to live with his mom and three sisters as he tries to get back on his feet while making one painfully stupid decision after another because he blindly swears by the kindness of others and is generally just dumb.

? the centerpieces of the show are sketches that cleverly unravel, filling the second half of each episode with long, absurd narratives starring billionaires dressed as hobos, drug lords with passport problems, and thimble-size gangsters (who live, natch, in Little Little Italy). JACKASS 3.5: THE UNRATED MOVIE Blu-ray Review (http://collider.com/jackass-3-5-blu-ray-review/96585/)

The set-up of 3.5 is that it has the cast talking about the bits that don?t work, and things that come close, but it seems there are less minor funny bits that didn?t make it in. If one of their nicer jokes don?t work, it seems that?s the stuff that?s not worth showing ? though producer Spike Jonze does a bit as an old lady with a tremendous camel toe where he nearly has a heatstroke. The show always borders on Allen Funt-y sort of Candid Camera gags, and that may be the most ?safe? sketch even if Jonze is offering to sleep with strangers.

There are some solid bits, and the basketball nut shot montage (seriously) is a thing of beauty. This doesn?t have the sense of ?it?s coming to an end? like the third film did, instead it feels like these guys are going to keep doing this until someone dies. Which seems both fitting and inevitable.

MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS Review (http://collider.com/mr-poppers-penguins-review/96409/)

Your kids are probably going to love Mr. Popper?s Penguins. I saw it an audience filled with kids and their parents, and the kids laughed throughout. They laughed when the penguins farted. They laughed when the penguins pooped. They laughed when the penguins fell down. They laughed when Jim Carrey made a funny face. The movie easily walks beneath the low bar set by what passes for family films and if you want to keep your kids amused for two hours and can?t find a shiny object, then Mr. Popper?s Penguins fits the bill. There?s nothing I can say against this film that makes it any less of a joy to kids who ask nothing more than funny faces, fart jokes, and slapstick.

Speaking of being nervous and intrigued, Rob McElhenney, who plays Mac on “It’s Always Sunny,” revealed late last week on Screen Junkies that he has gained 50 pounds for the show’s seventh season, which starts this September. Allow me to repeat that: Mac will be 50 pounds heavier this season. So far, nobody associated with the show has given an in-story or in-character explanation for the dramatic weight gain, but the actor has stated that he believes this will inherently make the character funnier. According to Charlie Day (who states that he and the rest of the cast worried at first, due to the obvious health implications), this is absolutely true.

Whoa.

Throw Those Devil Horns, Tom Cruise | CHUD.com (http://www.chud.com/57497/throw-those-devil-horns-tom-cruise/)

The first official, non-Twittered photo from Rock of Ages hit the Internet today, first from USA Today and then from Tom Cruise?s official site.

I?m a little late in posting it, but it?s a good thing I waited. We needed the hi-res Cruise edition.

I?ve never had the good fortune to see Rock of Ages, but I?m already disappointed to hear they?ve toned down the ?predatory? element of Stacee Jaxx, and made him a ?lost boy.? Seeing Cruise in full on letch mode would have been a lot of fun?seeing Cruise as a sad ?fame isn?t everything? rock star, not so much.

More than anything though, this picture makes me feel old. Not for the 1980s and hair bands (I?m a little too young) but because the teenage me would have gone weak at the knees to see Cruise in long hair, tight pants, and tattoos. Now it just feels weird. Like seeing my dad dressed up and rocking out.

We?ve already heard about guest stars such as Johnny Depp and Jerry Seinfeld , and it sounds like Sting and Steve Carell will also make appearances along with Gervais and Merchant playing themselves in small roles too. Emma Thompson to Write ANNIE Remake (http://collider.com/emma-thompson-annie-movie-remake/98457/)

It?s been a few months since we last heard about the Annie remake, developed by Will Smith as a starring vehicle for daughter Willow. At the time, Glee creator Ryan Murphy was mentioned as the frontrunner to direct. Smith and co-producer Jay-Z probably missed the chance to squeeze the shoot into the Glee spring/summer production hiatus between season two and three. To do so they would have needed a script. On that front, Vulture hears Smith and Jay-Z are in negotiations Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson to write the musical. Presumably, the topic came up as Smith and Thompson shared a break on the set of Men in Black III.

Review: ‘Bad Teacher’ Only Deserves A Mildly Passable Grade > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/review_bad_teacher_isnt_half_bad/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

It’s also sadly missing that added dimension that made “Bridesmaids” so special and essential – a willingness to investigate the real life, occasionally quite sticky aspects of female friendship. “Bad Teacher” is more straightforwardly cartoonish, but it’s often times almost as funny. We’re not sure how it will be interpreted in the context of the current discussion of women in comedy, but if you’re looking for some decent laughs to unwind your brain, “Bad Teacher” will deliver in that respect. However, if you’re looking for something with more meat around its bones, the picture tends to feel like a half-hearted and hurriedly written term-paper that you can only marginally endorse. [B-]

Though the film doesn’t sizzle or reinvent the wheel, it’s still consistently funny. That’s really all a comedy needs to be, and this works, though it feels like there’s a slightly better movie in the material. But director Jake Kasdan knows how to make watchable films, and much like his Walk Hard (which is often more conceptually funny than something that makes you laugh out loud), the replay factor on this one looks high.

Looks like this one might be good for the discount theater.

Bad Teacher is hardly a perfect picture, but in the context of every other comedy on the summer movie landscape — from the faux empowerment of Bridesmaids to the neurotic frat-guy heteromania of The Hangover Part II — it feels revolutionary. When Diaz’s Elizabeth Halsey, an unapologetic bad apple, slinks into her seventh-grade classroom in black leggings and five-inch Loubs, her bloodshot eyes hidden behind black Ray-Bans, she’s not anyone we aspire to be, or even anyone we’d want to be friends with. She frees us from the tyranny of relatability: She’s a flagrant, unrepentant fictional character, perhaps the scariest thing a woman in a modern movie can be.

Elizabeth Banks never hurt anyone and Rashida Jones don't make me turn away, but do i think this is a hell of a cast? Nope. And I think this looks like an oversimplified version of Being There, which was a usage of the Urkel character that I think even you can agree was good. I think the man-child thing can be enjoyable(Forrest Gump still tugs at my heartstrings) but Galifinakis/Carell do nothing for me. You forget, my biggest problem is I love the Pirates movies. I'm not the one who likes these quirky romcoms. Sheesh, you think someone knows you...

Yea I actually had left you out of that but then went back and added you... not sure why.

My apologies.

BUT I've had an assfull of Elizabeth Banks. She's not hot enough to justify the fact that she's not interesting enough to be in all these movies. She's like a 6 playing in a sandbox with no girls so she gets automatically upgraded to an 8. I'm done pretending.

Rashida Jones.... meh..... I'm a few seasons behind on Parks and Recreation so the only thing I have to go on is The Office and I Love You Man.

Oh and Forrest Gump doesn't count because unlike the rest of these obnoxious charactes HE WAS ACTUALLY COMPLETELY AWARE AND SOMEWHAT CONCERNED ABOUT HIS CONDITION!!! Unlike "The Urkel" who gets the end of the flick speech about "well at least I'm a nice person" where the audience and the mean old protagonist learns a lesson about life and love and I puke with rage and start looking for puppies to kick.

Liking it isn't the issue.

The point is he doesn't fit "The Urkel" mold for two very important reasons.

1. Complete self awareness.

2. He doesn't threaten to ruin anyone's life.*

Tonight in news that is strange but oh-so-wonderful, the Monty Python gang will be getting back together. All of them, even Graham Chapman, who died of cancer in 1989. According to the New York Times, Chapman recorded an audiobook before he died, chronicling his life and times with the Python gang. Now Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, John Cleese and (if he signs) Eric Idle will use those recordings for an animated film about Chapman?s life. My heart swells at the very notion.

Am I alone in thinking this is a tremendous idea and pretty much the only way a reunion would be worth it?

Speaking with Little White Lies Eisenberg confirms that work is happening on a “Zombieland 2,” but he doesn’t particularly seem enthused about it immediately denying his involvement—for now. “No. They’re writing the script right now but I haven’t seen it and I suspect that the longer we wait, the less relevant it will be,” he said. “I mean, all the actors would love to do it and the director would love to do it but I’m not sure what’s happening.”

First up is “Jeff Who Lives At Home,” the second mainstream picture from The Duplass Brothers, who became indie favorites with films like “The Puffy Chair” and “Baghead,” proving to be standouts of the so-called ‘mumblecore’ scene, before getting to work with bigger names and budgets on last year’s excellent “Cyrus.”

Their follow-up to that film has been in the can for a while, having shot last year, and sees them working with two of the biggest names in comedy right now, Jason Segel and Ed Helms, as well as Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon. Segel plays the titular Jeff, who according to the official synopsis on TIFF’s website, “leaves his house on a banal errand for his mother (Sarandon) [and] discovers that the universe might be sending him messages about his destiny.”

While it was first vaguely described as an “edgy character drama,” some details have arrived on Todd Solondz’s new feature, “Dark Horse,” which will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Ok, those details are slim, but the TIFF website says the film is an intimate dark comedy about a manchild whose desire for a romantic relationship runs smack into reality.

While it boasts a cast that includes Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow and Selma Blair (the latter a veteran of Solondz’s “Storytelling,”) along with Zachary Booth (”Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”) and Donna Murphy (”Spider-Man 2”), the true lead appears to be Jordan Gelber, a relatively-unknown character actor who has appeared on shows like “Boardwalk Empire,” “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”

He plays a thirtysomething man still living with his parents (Walken and Farrow), who seeks out a relationship with a woman in a similar state of arrested development (Blair) in an attempt to shed his label as the dark horse of the family. Bartha and Booth will play, respectively, the protagonist’s brother and cousin, while Mandvi will be Blair’s ex-boyfriend, and Murphy will be Walken’s secretary.

The film is an intriguing one that finds Kaufman sticking to Hollywood in a story that follows “a volatile back and forth between a film director (Frank) and an online blogger (Francis), who takes delight in berating his cinematic talent.” No word yet on who is playing what role. Variety also notes that there are two female lead roles yet to be cast, but here’s the catch: they will require singing.

http://i2.blogs.indiewire.com/images/blogs/theplaylist/archives/jason-bateman-werethemillers.jpg

Bateman will now head up the forever in the works comedy “We’re The Millers” with “Dodgeball” helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber (best name ever) in the director’s chair. In various stages of development for nearly a decade that saw folks like directors John Morris and Sean Anders and actors Will Arnett and Steve Buscemi go through the revolving door, the film is about as high concept as they come. Bateman would play a low level pot dealer who decides to make one last big score. However, to get the supply he needs for the job, he puts together a fake family which includes a “stoner neighbor kid who is borderline retarded and a sassmouth prostitute” herds them into an RV and heads to Mexico to pick up 1,400 pounds of marijuana. Maybe you won’t be surprised to hear that it’s described as a mix between “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” “The Hangover” and “Horrible Bosses.”

Told you.

Jordan Gelber portrays the film’s titular dark horse—a man in his 30s who’s an avid toy collector, lives with his parents (Mia Farrow and Christopher Walken) and works for his dad. When he meets a woman (Selma Blair) he’s inspired to make more of his life—but, this being a Todd Solondz movie, it results in tragedy.

Three Images From Bobcat Goldthwait’s “Angry, Bloody” God Bless America Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/08/03/three-images-from-bobcat-goldthwaits-angry-bloody-god-bless-america/)

I?m a big fan of Bobcat Goldthwait, film director. I don?t know how well I remember his stand up, and I think he was selling himself short in a lot of his acting roles, but in recent years, he?s come out swinging with some of the best, most engaging and smartest films I?ve had the pleasure to force on my friends.

The best way to describe his films, I think, would be as moral fables. Sometimes aggressive, always committed, consistently funny moral fables. His latest, God Bless America, seems to be more of the same.

The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and here?s how their program describes it:

It?s a Bonnie and Clyde for the 21st Century as a 45 year old man and a teenage girl go on a killing spree in comedian Bobcat Goldthwait?s angry and bloody black comedy.

The story apparently starts when ?the man? sees an episode of something like My Super Sweet 16 and decides to kill the girl who starred in it. After tracking her down and committing that murder, he?s confronted by one of her peers who asks if he was responsible for the killing? but instead of reprimanding him or screaming for police, she joins him, and they team up to kill and kill again.

Tim Hill to Direct WALTER THE FARTING DOG (http://collider.com/tim-hill-walter-the-farting-dog/107791/)

Here?s the synopsis for the book:

We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter, an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it?s a 25-pound bag of low-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side, ?If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter.? When Father reaches the limit of his patience with Walter?s flatulence, he decides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy?s pleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and ?He resolved to hold in his farts forever.? That very night, two burglars break into Walter?s family?s house, and (you can see where this is going) Walter gasses the burglars with a ?hideous cloud? that forces them to drop their loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, ?choking and gasping for air.? The next morning Father and Mother discover Walter has saved the day?or at least their silverware and VCR. ?And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. And that is the end of our tail.? (Or is it? Fans will be pleased to discover the next book Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble at the Yard Sale.) Audrey Colman?s highly stylized illustrations, imbued with a surreal, Monty Pythonesque collage look, are as absurdly comical as this silly story that is purely powered by natural gas. [Amazon]

http://i2.blogs.indiewire.com/images/blogs/theplaylist/archives/Butter.jpg

One film that is pretty high on our must-see list at TIFF this year is “Butter,” a film that boasts an outrageously good all-star cast—Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Ty Burrell, Yara Shahidi—in a high concept, Black List approved comedy.

Directed by Jim Field Smith (“She’s Out of My League) and written by Jason Micallef, the story follows Laura (Garner), the wife of a former butter sculpting champion Bob (Burrell) who tries to take the mantle from her husband only to be thwarted by a young adopted African American girl (Shahidi), who has discovered that she has a natural talent for making art from out of butter. The offbeat story has a bit of edge to it as it’s apparently an analogy for the 2008 Democratic primaries. In this political allegory, Laura and Bob are obviously Hillary and Bill Clinton, with the the young African girl playing the Barack Obama figure in the story. Whether or not that allusion is pushed hard or not, we’ll soon see, but this has some great potential and well be eager to see how it turns out.

Sometimes it’s best for a comedy not to overstay its welcome and we may have become too accustomed to the long comedy. Yeah Baby Yeah! Mike Myers To Return To AUSTIN POWERS!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50795)

I do not want to hear a single complaint. His vomitus personality has forced him back to the well and that's fine with me. The AP movies have gotten better and better and Mini-me needs some work.

Mike Myers hasn't had very much success outside the SHREK films in recent years, although I loved his turn as Captain British Exposition (yes, I know, that's not his name) in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. But THE LOVE GURU did terribly and he hasn't been in many films since then. So it comes as not much of a surprise that Myers has decided to return to the role that gave him worldwide stardom - no, not Wayne, but Austin Powers, according to a HitFix exclusive (Drew's on a roll lately!).

No word on a story, or who would be directing - Jay Roach did good work in the other films, so I'd love it if he returned as well - but I can imagine Austin Powers spoofing the Bourne films and the Daniel Craig iteration of James Bond. "You guys are so serious, baby! And none of you shag with any regularity!" And Dr. Evil would return as well, I'm assuming; with all the faceless enemies of the new spy films, I'd be curious to see how Myers would spoof that with Dr. Evil. The AUSTIN POWERS movies still hold up - they're ridiculous and have the mentality of a 12-year-old watching a porno for the first time, but they're still so damn funny and enjoyable. I'm glad to have Austin Powers and Dr. Evil back. Pinky to mouth time!

I have no words here. First off, the AP trilogy is brilliant, with the exception of the first one(which is ok) simply because it clings more to the standard satire formula, whereas 2 + 3 just ran with the silliness and almost had a Family Guy rapid fire gag feel to them.

Mike Myers Closes Deal to Return in AUSTIN POWERS 4 (http://collider.com/austin-powers-4-mike-myers/109170/)

[Update: Deadline reports that Myers hasn't officially signed a deal for Austin Powers 4 yet, but his reps came to New Line this week to express interest in the deal. In short, AP4 is most likely happening, but it may not be official just yet.]

Roach was asked about the idea of a 3D comedy, and he wondered aloud whether the concept could work:

If we ever did an Austin Powers 4, I would love to do Dr. Evil’s world in 3D. It would be fantastic. I wonder if anyone would think about… I guess you couldn’t really mix and match. It’d be great to use it as a one-world as 3D and the other world is… it probably would make more sense if Austin’s world was 3D and Dr. Evil’s was more flat.

I don’t know that 3D is the tool that will reinvigorate the Austin Powers franchise, but at least he’s thinking in those terms. Myers just turned 48, and could very well be 50 before the movie comes out. This will be a good, two-decade case study for my theory that comedy, like rap, is a young man’s game.

I am not totally convinced the sequel is fact. The project could fall by the wayside if Myers isn’t 100% motivated. But if Austin Powers 4 is indeed coming, what is the fan appetite? Are you in?

Abrams-produced series “Six Degrees”) and Ben Karlin (a “Daily Show” veteran and co-creator of “The Colbert Report”), made the 2008 Black List, and Zicherman will make his directorial debut on the project. Black Bear Pictures, who are behind Ramin Bahrani‘s next film, are producing.

We’ve read the script, and it’s pretty great: somewhere between “Bridesmaids” and Noah Baumbach in tone, and should prove an excellent showcase for Scott, as well as plenty of other top comic actors. Filming will get underway in March, fitting around Scott’s “Parks & Recreation” schedule, so we’ll likely see this in theaters (or least on the fest circuit) in the early part of 2013.

Jason Bateman & Melissa McCarthy To Commit ‘ID Theft’ (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/jsaon_bateman_melissa_mccarthy_to_commit_id_theft/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Melissa McCarthy—who walked away with pretty much every scene she had in “Bridesmaids”—will team with Bateman for “ID Theft” which he will also produce. Penned by Steve Conrad (”The Pursuit Of Happyness,” “The Weather Man”) with Craig Mazin (”The Hangover Part II & III”—told you Bateman was savvy) doing a rewrite, the premise originally centered on two men, one who steals the identity of the other. But once Bateman saw McCarthy’s comedic chops, he championed her for the role of the identity thief, and we’re definitely digging the concept already.

Foot Cramps & Sex Don’t Mix In Red Band Trailer For ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’ (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/watch_foot_cramps_sex_dont_mix_in_red_band_trailer _for_a_good_old_fashioned/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Led by the omnipresent Jason Sudeikis, the film boats a pretty simple premise: as a send off to the cottage where a group of friends have summered for years, a final blowout orgy is planned. Even though the film is lined up to be a cameo fest, it seems everyone is making the most of their time. Will Forte and Lucy Punch as the newlyweds who are pissed at their friends for just now deciding to do an orgy are a highlight, while David Koechner also appears with a strange request (and look, there’s Martin Starr!). We caught the film earlier this spring at the Tribeca Film Festival, calling it a worthy throwback to films like “Animal House” and “Stripes,” and at the very least it looks like it will put a solid cap on a long summer of foul mouthed comedies.

Tyler Labine, Leslie Bibb, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Nick Kroll and Lindsay Sloane round out the cast for the film that will make Labor Day sexier when it opens on September 2nd.

It all goes awry.” As long as it’s no one says “It’s in the vein of Bushwhacked!” I’ll be happy. The flick’s also got a solid supporting cast featuring Rob Riggle, Maura Tierney, and Patrice O’Neal. Review: ‘Our Idiot Brother’ A Breezy, But Uneven Attempt To Replicate The Judd Apatow Touch > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/review_our_idiot_brother_a_breezy_but_uneven_attem pt_to_replicate_the_judd/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Because while “Our Idiot Brother” is flawed, it’s also easily and effortlessly entertaining. Ensemble casts don’t get much better than this, and they often elevate the film; a lesser cast would’ve made its weaknesses all the more apparent. Rudd’s charm goes a long, long way in making the multi-threaded story a breeze to navigate. But its pleasures are temporary and fleeting, and the ultimate moral—about being honest with yourself and those around you—is rather facile and something that we would expect from a movie like “I Don’t Know How She Does It” (which trailed before the film) rather than from a film that boasts the kind of talent that can take comic material to unexpected places. And perhaps that’s the biggest disappointment with “Our Idiot Brother”—it never takes the risks the you want it to and in playing it safe, it locks up its true potential. [B-]

Review: What Idiots Messed Up a Promising 'Our Idiot Brother'? | The Wrap Movies (http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/great-cast-occasional-laughs-cant-save-our-idiot-brother-30403)

From the poster, you might think “Our Idiot Brother” has all the elements for a great comedy -- Paul Rudd starring as a sweet, stoned doofus, opposite a cast of hilarious heavyweights like Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones and Adam Scott.

But something went wrong along the way -- while the film does offer its share of zingy one-liners and entertaining character moments, the final result is a movie that can’t decide if it wants to be snarkily sweet or mean and misanthropic.

Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson together again at last! The Rum Diary trailer is great!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50965)

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. As a die hard of Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and of Johnny Depp's approach at adapting the auto-biographical characters of Hunter S. Thompson, I am so ready to see The Rum Diary.

It's been in the can for a while and that has lead to some speculation that it isn't very good. Now, we finally see a trailer and I can't say anything about the finished film, but the trailer itself is pretty damned exciting.

I mean, Depp has his Thompson voice on, which automatically makes me partial to the trailer and then the craziness of the bits and pieces we see leads me to think just maybe the film will end up being close to the same crazy fun universe glimpsed in Fear and Loathing.

Capone says OUR IDIOT BROTHER is a charming, perfect way to end a summer of mostly great R-rated comedies!!! (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50974)

OUR IDIOT BROTHER is a celebration of messed-up families that care enough about each other to sweep aside the bull**** to help one another. It's the best movie of the week for sure, and a great way to close out an unusually strong summer of R-rated comedies. And if you tell me OUR IDIOT BROTHER didn't do it for you, I'll kick your ass from here to Peoria. Now go see it.

Nordling Says OUR IDIOT BROTHER Is Funny And Sweet! (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50972)

OUR IDIOT BROTHER is one of those quiet comedies that gets ignored while louder, more obnoxious films take center stage. But Jesse Peretz (who worked with Paul Rudd before in THE CHATEAU) deftly manages all the plots and subplots into a cohesive whole. OUR IDIOT BROTHER is a minor key kind of film, one that could easily slip through the cracks among other Hollywood properties. But Paul Rudd's performance is nuanced, subtle, and yet still hilariously funny, and he's worth the price of admission alone. Rudd is one of our finest comedic actors, and he's a treat in OUR IDIOT BROTHER.

Anybody see this yet? I'm tempted to because of the cast, but it looked kind of lame...

Rachel Boston (In Plain Sight) will fill the final slot in the ensemble cast of the indie comedy It’s a Disaster. The story centers on “four couples who meet for Sunday brunch, only to find themselves stranded in a house together as the world may be about to end.” Julia Stiles, America Ferrera, Laura Adkin, Todd Berger, Kevin M. Brennan, Jeff Grace, Blaise Miller play the other seven members of the group. According to THR, Boston will play “a whip-smart wildcard named Lexi Kivel.” That’s a pretty great character name—combine that with the gleefully surrealist premise, and I’m hooked.

In addition to his starring role, Berger wrote the script, and will direct the production next month in Los Angeles.

A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY Review (http://collider.com/good-old-fashioned-orgy-review/112725/)

I didn’t want to write this review because it would involve me giving more thought to repulsive, selfish characters who populate a comedy that’s almost entirely devoid of laughs. There’s something fascinating about a movie that sets up jokes and then forgets to deliver a punchline. And because awful character delivering non-jokes isn’t enough, the film is saddled with limp, thoughtless direction that misses every opportunity for a laugh. When A Good Old Fashioned isn’t being clich?d, it’s being dull, and sometimes it’s both, but it’s hardly ever funny.

How does a project with this many big names go unannounced and under the radar? Well, it’s a indie and the the debut film of Atlas Independent, the newly-formed affiliate company of Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainmenta company that focuses on development and production of films budgeted under $10 million (Roven known by fans as one of the producers of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman series).

A dramatic dark comedy, “Revenge For Jolly!” follows a man (Petsos) who, with the help of his cousin (Oscar Isaac), seeks to avenge the death of his beloved dog, who was killed under confusing and suspicious circumstances. The two men follow a series of clues in an attempt to track down the dog’s murderer, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.

Goldthwait doesn’t want to make us question our animosity towards pop culture. He wants to celebrate it and pat us on the head and tell us we’re right to hate trashy reality shows, the mean people on the TV, and jerks we encounter in our day-to-day lives. We’re right to hate them because they’re ruining America because America used to be awesome. In his climactic speech, Frank laments a time when we were kinder to each other, and he’s right. Just ask African Americans, Native Americans, Jews, Women, or anyone who wasn’t a white Christian male. In another rant and without a hint of irony, Frank compares American Idol and its ilk to the entertainment of the coliseum and how it preceded the downfall of Roman civilization. Frank neglects to mention that in the coliseum they killed people for entertainment. That may happen on reality TV at some point down the road, but I suppose the gleeful fake murders of God Bless America will have to suffice for now.

Hockey, as viewed through the eyes of Michael Dowse’s Goon, is 60 minutes of fighting occasionally interrupted by moving a puck around on an icy surface. It shouldn’t bother hockey aficionados or anyone else too much since the film is delightfully crass, painfully funny, and grounded by a cuddly performance from Seann William Scott. The movie has a big place in its heart for George Roy Hill’s Slap Shot but it’s not trying to upstage its predecessor or make itself the heir-apparent. It’s just trying to make you hurt from laughing so hard.

Tilda Swinton Says She’ll Face Off With Bruce Willis In Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/tilda_swinton_says_shell_face_off_with_bruce_willi s_in_wes_andersons_moonri/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed)

: One of the reasons we’re more excited for “Moonrise Kingdom” than we have been for any Wes Anderson film in a decade is the cast. While a few of Anderson’s usual repertory company—most notably Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzmann, are returning—the leads, a twelve-year-old boy and girl, are newcomers (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), and the supporting cast are made up of some intriguing new names, including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Frances McDormand.

On working with Anderson for the first time on the project, Swinton said that, “It was a real joy. [The film]‘s the most recent party that I accepted to go and enjoy, and that was really great fun.” The 1960s-set tale involves the aftermath of two children who run away from a small New England town together, and Swinton confirmed that the plot will also follow the grown-ups involved in the search, of which she plays one. “It’s about a community of adults who don’t really know what they’re doing, and I play one of them. She’s the point of authority, she’s social services, and she’s brought in as a sort of last resort, force majeure. And she has a head to head with Bruce Willis, which you can imagine is quite fun.”

I haven't seen Gremlins 2 in an eternity. I saw it in the theater and that Hulk Hogan scene was a hoot! Joe Dante is a good man. I still haven't seen his movie Matinee though. :/

And does anybody really need to make an argument for why GB 2 wasn't a good movie? ;)

TIFF ‘11 Review: Sarah Polley’s ‘Take This Waltz’ Has Insights And Edges Sharp Enough To Stab > The Playlist (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/tiff_11_review_take_this_waltz_sarah_polley_michel le_williams_seth_rogen_sa/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Polley has an eye for detail and an ear for truth; at a press event for the film, she noted how she wanted to make her film go past where a conventional movie like this would end, showing what comes after, and that follow-through is what turns the film from a strong jab into a knockout punch. It may seem ridiculous to suggest that Polley, after only “Away from Her” and “Take this Waltz,” is one of Canada’s and film’s most exciting and important new directors; I’d suggest that contention only seems ridiculous if you haven’t yet seen “Take this Waltz.” [A]

Cast includes Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman, etc. Might actually belong in the drama thread, but... **** it.

TIFF ‘11 Review: Admirable, Low-Key ’50/50’ Splits Difference Between Genuinely Funny And Sad (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/tiff_11_review_the_admirable_low-key_50_50_splits_the_difference_between_ge/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_content=Google+Reader)

There’s been a lot of Oscar talk from early audience screenings and things of that nature, and while that’s flattering and all, this writer can’t see this film penetrating the Academy doors at all. That’s not to say there aren’t good performances in the picture. If anyone here would be earning any accolades it’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but his likable and well-proportioned turn in this picture isn’t the type that earns nominations. “50/50” is a picture you want to root for—it’s mellow, it’s adult and it’s generally approached with a directorial calm and collected head, but it’s also a bit bottled up and fails to truly connect emotionally. Toronto 2011: Seth Rogen cancer comedy '50/50' earns standing ovation - latimes.com (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/09/toronto-2011-seth-rogen-cancer-comedy-5050-earns-big-support-1.html)

“That was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” said Jonathan Levine, the director of the new movie “50/50,” after receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the Toronto International Film Festival. Granted, moviegoers at the fest are traditionally kind, but there seemed to be an extra amount of good will in the room for the Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Seth Rogen cancer buddy comedy when it made its world premiere here Monday.

JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME Review (http://collider.com/jeff-who-lives-at-home-review/111127/)

The Duplass Brothers’ Jeff, Who Lives at Home opens on a terrific note by bashing the silliness of M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. Unfortunately, that’s about as hilarious and insightful as Jeff gets. While the lead performances are solid and there are some funny jokes along the way, the film is saddled with a weak sub-plot and an even weaker subtext. Jeff, Who Lives at Home ends up revering what it originally mocked.

GOD BLESS AMERICA Review (http://collider.com/god-bless-america-review-movie/115882/)

I’ll never claim that God Bless America is a masterpiece. The movie is definitely flawed with Bobcat throwing in a few rants to many and admittedly never offering any sort of solution to overcoming dumbed down American culture. He more or less just acknowledges his disgust. However, I applaud the means with which he makes his argument and the extreme places that he allows his imagination to go. Comedy is too often dismissed as merely light entertainment. There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but the genre can also be used as means of examining themes an ideas too uncomfortable to explore dramatically. It would be entirely possible to play this same story and argument straight and I would have no problem dismissing that version of the moive as exploitative and empty. Satire is slightly different though. God Bless America is a thought experiment designed to make you laugh. Think of it as the cinematic equivalent of a Bill Hicks rant about advertising or American culture. Is the subject trivial? In the grand scheme of things, sure. But it’s also about something that takes up so much space in the American landscape that it deserves to be discussed and satirized. Disagreeing with Goldthwait is fine, at least he made you consider his opinion. However, I don’t think the movie should be dismissed or ignored. The ideas are valid and worth the attention. Don’t take it too seriously though. It is a comedy after all, just one that will hopefully stick around in your head for a while after the laughter and/or disgust fades.

Rating: B+

Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson & James Franco Added to ‘Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse’ | /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/jonah-hill-danny-mcbride-craig-robinson-james-franco-confirmed-jay-seth-apocalypse/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+slashfilm+%28%2FFilm%29&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Specifically, Rogen told MTV, ?We?ve decided to add more people, so ideally ?Jay and Seth? looks like it has become Jay, Seth, Jonah, Danny, Craig and James,? with the latter four names being Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride, and James Franco. Daniel Radcliffe was rumored for the film at one point, but seems like a no-show at this point, with Rogen explaining ?it doesn?t look like he?s willing to push things as far as we [are].?

The refresher course on the film is pretty short: in the original ?trailer,? Jay and Seth are stoner friends who really start to get on one another?s nerves as they take refuge from the end of the world. We?ve heard that the film would be a button-pusher, and Rogen has said in the past,

It?s going to be a pretty offensive vision of the apocalypse. And I want a lot of dead celebrity cameos. Because L.A. is full of famous people, I?d like all of the cameos to be them as corpses.

"All of the medical students and faculty I talked to after the screening thought it was a wonderful training film, which is unusual for a Hollywood movie. But it really did hit virtually all of the key issues," said Siegel, referring specifically to how the film addresses interpersonal relationships, sexuality, the pain associated with treatment, and losing friends made during chemo sessions, among other topics.

"The only issue Will didn't hit was the financial issue, which I asked Will about," added Siegel. "He told me he had to write his script to pay all his medical debts."

Can I take this one???? Among everything...yes. Is Ellen Page in this? Because she is the tinderstick of epic hipster comedy-that-isn't-really that a movie like this clearly needs. Neither her nor Cera are in it, no.

It's a Jason Reitman movie. It has Patton Oswalt in it.

The trailer's not amazing or anything, but those two reasons right there are good enough for me to be optimistic about it.
