Did we have a thread about this a while ago?

Anyway, two in two nights for me on the box and I realised my guilty pleasures have crossed the line into dirty dark secrets but still they are a pleasure for me.

Maverick with Mel Gibson and Hudson Hawk.

What are yours? Do your worst.

I am not sure that any of these really qualify as "guilty pleasures," but... Blade Runner??? Seriously?? One of the top ten Sci-Fi movies of all time on just about any list?

I would also put "The Jerk" in the "not a guilty pleasure" category. It's not a bad movie at all. I'd say it's a pretty god damn good movie.

Luc...Hudson Hawk is the epitome of guilty pleasures. It was critically lambasted, it's budget vs gross is still lopsided, it was almost obnoxious in it's vanity project status...and it is a sneaky great movie. See your point with Maverick because that was actually successful(remember when Mel was box office gold??? anyone???) but even still, that movie hasn't aged well and people prolly look at it and go wtf? Even successful flicks can be guilty pleasures.

As far as the Saw movies, they are probably really close to the Hellraiser flicks. If you edited all of them into a cohesive unit it would probably kick large amounts of ass. But as stand alones there are good and bad moments.

Tell you what all you quitters, once you actually sit down and watch John Carter you will add that to the list.

Here's an off the board choice...FLYBOYS with Martin Henderson/Tyler Labine/Jean Reno/ and that guy from 127 hours. Another one...one of my all time faves, SMOKING ACES.

SmytheKing
June 5th, 2012, 11:16 PM

Maybe it's nostalgia. . .but I sure wish they made horror movies like they did in the 80's still. That seemed like a seminal time for some great movies. Not masterpieces by any stretch, but good creepy scary bloody fun.

EDIT: and how the hell do you have 23k posts? Jesus Christ!

I have no life...

But as far as why the past was better...there was no CGI. Practical RULED. You could only create with your hands. And some of the best worked their magic. And...surprise surprise, writers had to find creative ways to compensate. So you just had better movies that were built to showcase astounding fx that they HOPED they could fix in post. Nowadays, just too easy. Somethings not right...well, we will cgi it out. So not as much attention is placed on script and basic footage. Hence all these damned movies doing 5 weeks of reshoots and major revisions in the LAB. Pumpkinhead had a budget of 3 or 4 k...and it's all on the screen...story included. I sound like a 'IN MY DAY...' curmudgeon but in my rant there is at least some truth.

Watched this as background noise the other day...certainly qualifies in this category. Strange movie. I like Martin Henderson(Smoking Aces/Flyboys/The Ring) and Ice Cube does his patented scowl in this fast and furious rip off. But Adam Scott is in it, so that's weird. Monster Magnet have a nice cameo...ah hell this is kinda a crappy movie, but it sure beats watching Grown Ups.

Love Charles Dance and his pompous typically English quotes.

Tony Vivaldi: What is this, Benedict? First you're my friend; now you turn a... 360 on me!

Benedict: 180, you stupid, spaghetti-slurping cretin - *180*! If I did a 360, I'd go completely around and end up back where I started!

Tony Vivaldi: What?

Benedict: Trust me!

My guilty pleasures are the horde of very low budget bad movies they show almost any Saturday on SyFy Channel, like this past month: Jersey Shore Shark Attack, Pirhanhaconda, Arachnoquake (an earthquake in New Orleans releases deadly spiders) and this past weekend: Bigfoot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1876261/), starring Danny Partridge as a Rock DJ trying to put on a concert & Greg Brady as an environmentalist trying to stop it (and a bigfoot killing everybody in sight (including Alice Cooper)).

Running Scared w/ Billy Crystal/Gregory Hines and Dead Heat with Treat williams/Joe Piscopo

Great call jd - one of my guilty pleasures as well. I am reading Billy Crystal's book right now ("Still Foolin' 'Em"). He mentions Running Scared as one of his all time favorite times in making a movie especially with Gregory Hines. They loved doing their own stunts. Crystal notes he had never fired a gun, fake or real, until this movie. He says,

"...before that I'd never even had one in my hand, unless you count using my index finger as a kid to shoot the bad guys: 'Bam bam bam.' The first day of filming was a shoot-out scene in a dingy drug dealer's apartment. With movie bullets flying around me, I would have to run into a room, dive onto the floor, and shoot my pistol three times. I did the first take, hit the ground, and fired the pistol. Peter yelled, 'Cut,' the crew applauded, and he called me over to the monitor, where he was cueing up the video playback. I was jazzed - this was a real movie! We watched the playback, and there I was, Mr. Tough Guy. I flew into the room, looking like a real cop, hit the floor, and when I fired the pistol, I shouted, 'Bam bam bam!' 'You don't have to make the sound - the gun will,' joked Peter (Hyams, director). I had no idea I'd said the word."

Great read if you at all like Billy Crystal. He is one of a kind as was Gregory Hines.

The Last Action Hero probably also fits the bill.

Come to think of it, as late-'80s/early-'90s-style action-comedies go, I think Iron Man 3 is a great one.

The Roger Corman one or the Frank Oz one? Neither should be "guilty," IMO, just pleasure.

The new ending just released for the Frank Oz version on Blu-ray is pretty enjoyable, too.

I've seen both but the frank oz one has the perfect amount of outrageous campy everything that puts it so far over the top of guilty pleasuredom. It honestly might be my favorite Steve Martin role.

Hellraiser is friggn awesome. Clive Barker willing, I'd love to see a modern reboot of the franchise with Doug Bradley as the man. The concepts make the story.

The only thing good about any of the crappy sequels was Paula Marshall in III:

Now that you guys mention it, I remember reading a quick something about a new one like 5 years ago.

Like I said, the concepts CB put into Hellraiser are timeless. With a well written, detailed screenplay, this potentially could be a Badass reboot. But without Doug Bradley, it would suck before the first second of film is rolled.

I am all for Bradley...but dude is pushing 70(I think) at this point. Sooner or later it becomes moot. Problem with the property is the same as always...there is a DeSade quality to the evil contained in the concept. And when the first Hellraiser got made it was dangerous for its time. We live in an age of torture porn, which Hellraiser is not. It has elements, but it is even DARKER because of the psychological aspects. I think studios and the mpaa have less trouble with the rending of flesh, than they do with the rending of flesh coupled with psychological/sexual overtones. The RIGHT Hellraiser would be Bob Guccione going all Caligula and drumming up a **** ton of money and blow for Barker to entice great actors to throw away their careers on. I think Malcolm McDowell would JUMP at the gig. Ok...how do I get down off this soapbox.

Cannonball Run, Hooper, Six Pack, Smokey and the Bandit, Gator, Sharky's Machine...etc.

I have a super soft spot for late 70's-early 80's Burt Reynolds. He was the f***ing man.

I wish he and Dom DeLuise would have made more movies together. They had fantastic chemistry. I could watch the Cannonball Run blooper reels all day long. RIP Dom!

Hooper was the very first VHS tape my pop bought for our new VCR way back when. I remember him complaining that the "G-Damn tape was $95 plus tax!"

That top loading VCR we had was a tape eating machine. Between that and the cost of movies, I think the VCR lasted about 6 months before Pops traded it in for a "ON TV" box. lol

Good times those late 70's, early 80's.
