Its about ****ing time we have this thread! Kings Provisional, Dave, ges?

Since just before my 41st B-day last week, I've been having a major, Major, MAJOR, "Punk Mid-Life Crisis". Ive been downloading gobs and gobs of newly accessible Punk MP3's from multiple sites. Well over $1500 worth including The Damned, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, DK, Misfits, Pistols, GBH, SubHuMans, Exploited, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, TSOL, Christian Death, Germs, X, etc... Most of which I have on vinyl, cassette or disc...but Im way too lazy and lack time to transfer them to digi. As a teen living in Oxnard, Hueneme, Ventura and Santa Barbara (Child of an a-typical nasty late 70's California Divorce), I'm kind of partial to Nardcore like Ill Repute, Aggression, Dr. Know, H.C., False Confession, Stalag 13...etc. In fact, Im very good friends with quite a few of the dudes in those bands now.

Lets load this bitch up with music....I need MOAR!!!

BTW, Happy 30th Birthday "Suicidal Tendencies" album. You definitely weren't the first but you made the first step towards making Punk acceptable in the main stream with track 6.

My personal fav is (track 2):

"I'm not anti-society
society's anti-me
I'm not anti-religion
religion is anti-me
I'm not anti-tradition
tradition is anti-me
I'm not anti-anything
I just wanna be free

Fascist state, no freedom
Unless you control yourself
Use self expression, lose your freedom
You're undesirable, you go straight to jail

Kill someone, in a war
Get a medal, you're a hero
Protect yourself in every day war
You're undesirable you go straight to jail

I'm not anti-Reagan
Reagan's anti-me
I'm not anti-government
government's anti-me
I'm not anti-politics
politics is anti-me
I'm not anti-anything
I just wannna be free

Two Sided Politics
Innocent, never guilty
High class lawyer, you are rich
If you're poor must be guilty
Even if innocent you go straight to jail"

Ill Repute was good. I have that 7". Sleepwalking is a great song. "In Control" by Stalag 13 is one of my favorite records.

In the summer of 1985, my high school best friend, had 3 bands play in his backyard. I was 15 years old & still very much a Mod. Although the transformation from being a Mod to a straight edge kid took 2 more years, this band started me down that path. To this day, this band & its altered ego band are my favorites.

This band, however, is in the top 10 of my all time favorites. They just did a reunion show in DC with the original singer. I am heavily influenced by post punk/hardcore bands of the mid to late 80's & early 90's.

If they decide to play out here, I'll be first to post a roll call.

Fantastic album! I have the "Skins, Brains and Guts" 7" at my moms house.

Never got into the Straight Edge lifestyle. Loved the music but was way to eager to smoke a bowl at any chance I could. :D

"In Control" is an absolute *must* in any collection of Nardcore. As is IR's "What Happens Next".

Speaking of *must*, I must find a decent MP3 of Youth Brigade's "Sound & Fury". The 2 I've sampled sound like they were ripped off napster using a 8 track.

Never really got into much of the hardcore stuff. I was always a more melodic person. (Thanks to hair metal of the 80's like Poison) Personally, more of a Rancid, Op Ivy, NOFX, Bad Religion kind of guy who would not be here without those pioneers. I think 2/3 of the punk today is screamo crap and the rest is the old bands doing what they usually do. Always will love DKM (though they have changed), Me First, and these guys

Just have to say suicidal is still one of my favorite bands to pop into the cd player. First encountered them at Metallica concert at CSUDH back in 94. They were ****ing nuts and amazing.

Other classics as mentioned adolescents, subhumans, I still even enjoy popping in some naked aggression.

don't have time to post videos, but my big ones are fugazi, the clash, gorilla biscuits/quicksand, black flag, texas is the reason, h2o, bad religion, far, jawbreaker/jets to brazil. so mostly stuff that rose from the ashes or were influenced by original punk and hardcore. then i like a bunch of post/melodic hardcore and pop punk bands that formed in the 90s as i was in high school and getting through college. those are too numerous to mention.

this will inevitably start the "what is punk" arguments. so........

Meh, I hope this thread doest turn into that tired debate. IMHO, Punk is ultimately a state of mind and not the stupid "Brand" it’s unfortunately become. Threads like this inevitably turn into an “F-U! My subgenre is better Punk than your subgenre…” and things get ugly. I hope we don’t go in that direction. I may disagree with what someone a lot younger than me may consider Punk, but it’s all relative. I’ve been fortunate enough to live through the heyday of the latter beginning, middle, and (what I would consider) the end of Punk. That gives me a better knowledge base to draw my conclusions from. Now if someone comes on here and says “Green Day is the best Punk band ever!” I’d call them lame and probably Ving them in the head…Now THAT’S PUNK! :D

Case in point, and I’m probably gonna get flamed but I've ALWAYS had a tough time calling the Ramones Punk (let 'er rip!)….that’s just me. I’m SURE there are some OG punks on here that would consider that to be Blasphemous...and maybe rightfully so. They would probably also consider Hardcore and thereafter to be garbage. But my introduction to Punk came after the Ramones had already laid the groundwork.

So, it would be highly hypocritical of me to say anything that came after Hardcore is crap. I’ll give anything a listening to and if its crap, it’s based on its content and not its label.

And thats that on it from me...

So I told him to **** off. He started on with the "ive a got a boy that can make your day miserable!" act and I went to the truck and said " I've got a boy that will make your day miserable right now.", he bailed. Im old school I reckon...

My deepest foray into Punk came from VHS tapes of Urgh A Musical War, Decline of the Western Civilization, and the old tv show Night flight that was shown on the USA channel back in the day. Of course....songs from this album were regularly played along with DK, Black Flag, and some Dickies for good measure.

Ok...so Nocturne and I probably aren't big fans of each other. When I was growing up, music was important and it defined you. You squared off on the schoolyard as to yer interests. And you were either a rust colored corduroy and vans guy, or a shaven headed oiOioi punker.

As I get older and realize how BIG the genre is, I realize I was listening to a lot of punk, it just wasn't the same kind of obvious punk others were listening to.

Saw them a couple years later opening for the bouncing souls in pomona. Paul walked up before the show and commented he liked my iron maiden shirt. I asked if they'd play Live Today, and they did. Consider me a fan.

Kind of funny when you look at it....how back in the day the Clash was considered Punk and spoke of in the same vain of the Sex Pistols and Black Flag. The best thing about that video, and I love Fear and Ving as much as any OG Punk, is the shear volume of Punk Hall O' Famers in that pit and all the little things happening during the clip. Tesco, Jon "Bloodclot" Josephs, Harley Flanagan, Henry Rollins, John Brannon, with the icing on the cake being Ian MacKaye yelling "New York Suuuuuuuuuuuuuks!!!" from his knees, into Vings downed mic. That clip makes me smile a mile wide every time I see it. So awesome on so many levels.

Edit: Read "Spray Paint the Walls: The Story of Black Flag" over a rainy weekend if you get a chance. GREAT BOOK!

At the Showcase Theater in Corona, at a late December show, '93ish, these guys hit me in the head with a Christmas tree when they threw it into the pit. Good times.

are there still shows at the showcase? I was quite big on the hardcore boom in the late 90s early 2000s (thank you former victory records) and many a show was out there.

here's another band out of san diego i used to love going to see when I lived out there, but never got much notoriety...

****! 11 bloody pages, I missed this thread and it has gone 11 ****ing pages! And I only now found it because it was mentioned in a thread on Home Ice! **** me!

My fault completely but next time someone shoot me a PM and let me know.

In any case there has been so many cool bands and vids mentioned and posted, it really brings back a lot of great memories.

I have been in a foul mood the last day or two so I have been listening to Discharge and One Way System. I must admit I have to be in the right mood to listen to Discharge and I will go long periods of time between listens, but when I do, they do the trick. Something about how raw they can be and Cal's voice that is just cool. One Way System is the same but there is nothing better than cranking up Systematic Abuse or Believe Yourself when you are pissed at the world.

If I continue in my bad mood I just might have to crank up some Varukers tomorrow.

The band that I first heard that got me into the whole thing, the band infected me so that punk was soon in my blood and I could not stop even if I wanted to:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/ba2fc2bb9c67c3ae60d04a210d70908e/tumblr_mlzgaikGFc1sorx0co1_1280.jpg

I may even have to post later about the night that I got to hang out with Charged G.B.H (I gotta put the "Charged" in there!) backstage.

Anyhoo, I will post some vids later.

Wow this thread's pretty damn awesome. It's like a master class in punk history. I can't compete with the knowledge being dropped about the punk originals of the '70s and '80s, so I'm gonna jump to the '90s and '00s, just because.

Since this is a hockey forum gotta give some love to Propagandhi, just because right? I mean punk that mixes in some hockey references? Hockey runs deep in Canada, even if your a queer vegan feminist anarchist.

Don't want to be the Steve Smith of the revolution. Do you see the analogy? We're the Oilers. The World Bank, the Flames! And just 2 minutes remain in the 7th game of the best of 7 series. Yeah, Jesus saves, Gretzky scores! The workers slave, the rich get more. One wrong move and we risk the Cup. So play the man, not the puck.
Propagandhi - Resisting Tyrannical Government

http://youtu.be/K4PrnYAHUxQ

Not really punk, but I always lump in early Camper Van Beethoven with punk in my brain because the attitude and sense of humor seemed so similar.
Camper Van Beethoven - Take the Skinheads Bowling

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQt-GvbWYKc&feature=share&list=ALBTKoXRg38BALpwa-G-C4qXdTxStDeN0Q

I always feel really sorry for kids of today because what can possibly be their "punk?" What I mean is aligning yourself with music that seemed so outlaw was half the fun back then. The simple act of liking music that the olds couldn't appreciate was a safe form of rebellion and acting out. The Reagan-Bush years were a boon for the punk attitude since that leadership really artificially extended the reign of that Lawrence Welk, pearl clutching, 1950s vibe, y'know? Even during the Clinton years, as the country lurched forward culturally after years of stagnation, there was hip-hop (which wasn't really new but it was new enough for most of America to freak out about) for kids to latch onto as music their rock 'n' roll parents could not understand. But now what? You can't listen to any kind of rock music since it's almost all old hat. Hip-hop has been mainstream for decades now. Even EDM isn't that new since parents of today have seen it before as house/techno/electronica/d&b/trance. So what's a kid that wants to define him/herself supposed to do? Are we reaching a strange time where kids cannot freak out square society with music anymore? If so that makes me really sad. Blasting "your" music that nobody else could appreciate was one of the simple pleasures of life as a kid. What the hell are current kids gonna wax rhapsodic about on messageboards in 20 more years? Sending stupid tweets on Twitter? Sexting each other with Snapchat? Completely lame BS like Mumford & Sons or Macklemore? Jesus, that's grim... Sorry for the ranting. Being up late + whisky never equals great things.

This s**t sounded revolutionary when it came out. Now it just reminds me of all the nu-metal BS bands that aped this sound after. That really pisses me off.

I'm in a better mood today so I did not break out the Varukers. Played a punk playlist from the ipod and this came up. Great tune! If the vocals sound familiar it is Dicky from the Subhumans, actually Trotsky and Phil from the Subhumans are in this band too. So it is 3/4 of Subhumans but with a bit of a lighter sound.

Great Album. One of my top 10s. I was looking at rawness of music versus a carte blance cover album. The Basslines and percussion of both Ride and Kill 'em are Punk but just cleaner and more refined. If Hetfield went more closed throat and barked lyrics, it'd been punk . "Motorbreath" for one is sooo punk its a travesty that Phaneuf from IR isn't on vox.

I am taking the time to crawl through this thread from the OP right now.

I don't see how we've covered as much as we have in this thread and The Clash hasn't gotten a post.

I got to meet Joe Strummer a few years before he passed away. He acted like an old friend and reminded me of a friend I had years ago that lived in an anarcho-syndicalist house way out in the canyons of Orange County. Very cerebral and freindly, with a hint of something threatening that you couldn't quite put your finger on. Nothing creepy, just...a 'don't eff with the nice guy' kinda thing.

Nothing creepy, just...a 'don't eff with the nice guy' kinda thing.

i didn't post videos since i'm usually way too tired before i come on here, but i'm pretty sure i mentioned the clash as joe strummer is one of my favorite musicians of all time. i'm jealous you got to meet him. i still remember the shock and disappointment upon hearing the news of his passing.

these are some of my favorite strummer related tunes:

A number of recent international and domestic events have spurred an influx of crowd sourced and student organized gonzo journalism videos, that I would love to post in a thread titled "Punk". Though I'm sure that would easily cross the line from a music discussion, to politics.

Meh, I hope this thread doest turn into that tired debate. IMHO, Punk is ultimately a state of mind and not the stupid "Brand" it?s unfortunately become. Threads like this inevitably turn into an ?F-U! My subgenre is better Punk than your subgenre?? and things get ugly. I hope we don?t go in that direction. I may disagree with what someone a lot younger than me may consider Punk, but it?s all relative. I?ve been fortunate enough to live through the heyday of the latter beginning, middle, and (what I would consider) the end of Punk. That gives me a better knowledge base to draw my conclusions from. Now if someone comes on here and says ?Green Day is the best Punk band ever!? I?d call them lame and probably Ving them in the head? Now THAT?S PUNK! :D

Case in point, and I?m probably gonna get flamed but I've ALWAYS had a tough time calling the Ramones Punk (let 'er rip!)?.that?s just me. I?m SURE there are some OG punks on here that would consider that to be Blasphemous...and maybe rightfully so. They would probably also consider Hardcore and thereafter to be garbage. But my introduction to Punk came after the Ramones had already laid the groundwork.

So, it would be highly hypocritical of me to say anything that came after Hardcore is crap. I?ll give anything a listening to and if its crap, it?s based on its content and not its label.

And thats that on it from me...

It is my humble opinion, that Iggy Pop and the Stooges started punk music. (though, back then we just referred to it as underground rock and roll)

Was listening to these guys earlier....

Cool vid with a bit of eye candy.

Quick story: In 2001 during the Kings playoff run I saw Tiger Army in the Anaheim HOB open for the Rev. I was sporting a Kings hat and had just gotten a brew after Tiger Army's set. As I was walking back to where my freinds were, I almost literally run into then Tiger Army drummer Fred Hell, as seen in the above vid. I say say sorry then say how much I enjoyed the set. He says "Thanks man!" and I turn to go but he says "Hey, how are the Kings looking?" And says he is huge fan but has trouble keeping up with what is going on due being on tour. So Fred and I, got beers and then spend the next 20 minutes or so talking Kings hockey. The cool thing was that during that time all sorts of other fans and hot chicks came up to get his autograph or take a pic with him. He would simply pause, sign whatever they handed him or pose for a pic, then immediatly resume talking with me about the Kings. The whole time the fans coming up to him are looking at me with puzzled looks, trying to figure out who I am. One chick, being polite, asked for my autograph, thinking I must be in a band or something. I laugh and tell her "you don't want my autograph, I'm just a regular joe." She sort of blushes, apologizes and leaves. Fred laughs and tells me I should have just signed for her. The Rev is about to go on and Fred says thanks for talking hockey with him shakes my hand and says "Go Kings!" He could not have been a nicer or more down to earth guy.

I sort of hesitated to put The Southern Death Cult here since they are closer to post punk than pure punk, but I figured it was close enough. ;)

Seeing post punk here would be killer. And a lot of bands like Wire, Siouxsie & Banshees, and so on started as Punk, but then went Post Punk so it all fits. :)

Some of you should recognize the lead singer's voice right away without needing to look the band up.

My older brother had ripped a bootleg copy of the vinyl from a friend right after it first came out. If I recall correctly, “Institutionalized” didn’t even make the airways until the year after the original album release. By then, it was kind of old news to me. But boy oh boy do I remember the uproar after "I saw your mommy" was finally picked up by the masses.

I have an old friend who I hitchhiked to the East Bay with when we were 16 and lived in squats in Oakland for a handful of weeks. We moonstomped through some of the best underground punk shows together in the Bay Area. A true artist. An amazing painter, musician, and poet, but his love has always been photography.

Now that we're men of our 30s, he's become quite a successful freelance photojournalist and made his home in the Bay Area until recently. He left San Francisco a little over a year ago to live in Athens, then, not too long ago he went to Istanbul, and is now headed to Cairo on some crazy photo expedition.

While I think it's madness, I admire his dedication to his passion for documenting our worlds history as it unfolds. I've heard he narrowly escaped being arrested in Athens, has been tear gassed and shot at by police in Taksim Square (for taking pictures! the guys a pacifist!), and is now trying to get the funds or a gig to head to Sao Paulo or Rio after stopping in Egypt. We both have friends that we know from Jiu Jitsu in Brazil, so at least he knows people there, LOL.

In solidarity with and in dedication to my punk rocker friend in his quest to photograph public uprisings around the world, I say Bella Ciao!

'Next time you see me I may be smiling
Bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
I'll be in prison or on the TV

Cool. I caught Sean and Zander at The Redwood once. Acoustic set. Good stuff.

The first time I saw Zander Schloss was at the Olympic in August of 1985. The bands on the bill were Cockney Rejects, D.I., The Dickies, Circle Jerks and Uniform Choice. We were in the parking lot when one of my friends informs me,"Kevin's leaning on your car," referencing the character Kevin from Repo Man. I looked over, and, sure enough, there was Zander Schloss leaning on my trunk. None of us realized he'd joined Circle Jerks until we saw him again on stage during the show.

I'm assuming that's the guy from Falling in Reverse they seem to have so much disdain for?

I like if you search for Artists on epitaph's site it's got the "alumni" at the bottom. I'm still waiting for the next Deviates album.....

Epitaph Records, This Is An Intervention | NOISEY (http://noisey.vice.com/blog/epitaph-records-this-is-an-intervention)

Meh, it doesn't really matter to me at all anymore. As long as I can continue to find tons of top notch albums on various labels released each year (which I easily can), I won't worry about who else is on the label. No one is forcing me to listen to the crappy music. And it gives me something to laugh at to myself.

nah, that's the guy from bring me the horizon, but they do all look alike. aside from appearances and music, i have no idea what the guy's personality is like. i just don't like looking at him, much less multiple times a day like it happened when his band took over the epitaph instagram for a day.
even before this article, i've heard the guy from falling in reverse is a douche though. he was involved in a shooting, served time and assaulted his gf. here's his mugshot. :)

Brett Gurewitz is a fellow Jew so I cut him some slack.

Yes, he needs to run a business and count numbers.

And maybe someone who isn't the best artist, but brings money to produce better, but less selling peeps?

He does it, he loves hardcore punk, but also has a label to run.

Us Jews are always crunching numbers.

It's sorta a Yiddish thing. Epitaph is awesome.

Tee hee. Sorry, I was in a self loathing mood.

But still, I remember listening to this band and thinking it was lame.

Gurewitz was up to something big...

cant lie, its way too easy to love offspring and their shows. They're like the beach boys that way if you grew up in southern California.
