Some fantastic referees so far.

Both awarded pk's were weak. Then there's the phantom off-sides on Mexico. It pains me to give credit to El Tri, but they thoroughly deserved 3 points today.

Vamos Estados Unidos!!!

I don't have a problem with Brazil's penalty, the problem I have is that the player has to dive to be given the call. The Croatia player has zero need to try and grab a hold of Fred but he did and he did it right in front of the ref.

I'm a soccer tourist...just visiting for the World Cup. My parents are from Mexico and I'm USA. So I root for whoever gets the farthest. USA is in the "Group of Death," so it will probably be Mexico, but they're in the group with Brazil. Mexico was robbed of one goal, possibly two goals. These refs make the NHL ones look amazing.

WOW, Netherlands were goal crazy on Spain. Payback for that last WC. They look really strong.

FIFA got it right implementing goal line tech this World Cup, but I could do without the cutaways straight to the goal line tech cam.

Also, this goal by the Swiss with 2 minutes to go, shades of Penner in 2012.

I wouldn't say we were terrible......you have to remember who we were playing. Germany makes teams look bad most of the time.

Bradley needs to be replaced, plain and simple. He can't complete a pass to save his life and he's too hesitant with the ball.

With that said, we made it through. Hopefully Jozy will be fit for Tuesday. We'll need him against the Belgians...

I doubt that he'll be replaced. I haven't seen him play a good game this WC. As for terrible, yes, harsh, but I expect more. I'm tired of giving them the "gutty team" label that most US commentators tend to do. If they can play with the #4 (http://letsgokings.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=4) team in the world (Portugal) and practically beat them, then they could of beaten Germany. Belgium are very dangerous. They're going to need all the help and hopefully Jozy will be ready.

I said this last World Cup some people on here have massive expectations of the U.S. team, I think they are where they are supposed to be. Portugal are over-rated and really are relying on one wolrd class player who was carrying an injury so the 2-2 result despite losing the lead at the end was a good result.

I'm not sure how the U.S. are supposed to be beating a team who are now 14 games unbeaten and have reached the semis of the last two major tournaments they have taken part in. I am sorry to say but the U.S. are devoid of really top quality talent and if Jozy Altidore is a miss for the team then I think making it to the next round was a good result.

I would not have been surprised if the U.S. went 0-3 in the group stage and failed to score a goal in the process. Disappointed, but not surprised. So I'm quite pleased. They are a very significant step below real contenders like Germany which is chock full of world-class players, while the U.S. does not have a single one with the possible exception of Howard. In NHL terms, think the Kings vs. the Monarchs.

Personally, I didn't think that the US would even win a game in this WC, so yes, if I'm just looking at this WC, making it to the round of 16 is an accomplishment. But I want them to take the next step when they have the opportunity. Even the players that have been in the US system for a time have said that they shouldn't be satisfied with this result and push for more. I like to hear that, but I'm not seeing it.

Same here. We just have to hope that he breaks through this rut he's in. Not likely, though.

Portugal may have the best player in the world, but that #4 (http://letsgokings.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=4) ranking is a sham. They should be in the same range as the US. Germany is a whole different animal. They were/still are my pick to win it all.

FIFA rankings are a joke, but Portugal should not be in the same range as the U.S. There's not a single U.S. player who plays for a big European club. Including Ronaldo, Portugal has three Real Madrid players plus Nani, who plays for Man U, plus a couple Valencia guys and a couple of Fenerbahce guys. Ronaldo alone is a huge difference maker. They are not in the same league as Germany talent-wise, but they are a significant step above the U.S. They underachieved in a big way.

I agreed with the assessment that it almost seems like Bradley and Jones have switched roles. Bradley's first touch and turnovers have been hurting a lot, but he's still one of the best players we've got.

Jones seemed pretty emotional against Germany. I'm just glad he didn't manage to pick up a yellow and can play Tuesday (I hate the yellow card rules for round 1 to first knockout).

FIFA ratings are a joke. I love Belgium, but they're riding Hazard's/Lukaku and Mignolet's play (thankfully, as I am a Reds fan) into that ranking, but that's it. They've looked desperately thin in their starting IX this tourney and are insanely lucky to be where they are. That said, if they beat the US I would be happy to see them (or France) continue to do well.

The US really played no possession and sat back against Germany yet only lost 1-0 (I take that as a positive). We also had a small chance to tie it late in the game (oh if only Dempsey had buried that header).

The US were coming off a game in Manaus, so I was expecting a much worse result. Thank goodness for the back line's play. Gonzalez and Besler really stepped it up.

Jermaine Jones has been our best player. I, too, was glad he made it out of the Germany match without that second yellow!..

I concur, and, as a Blues fan, equally thankfully.

did i read that right? the yellow card accumulation continues one more game? So if the US happens to win but Jones picks up a yellow tomorrow he has to sit out the next game?

I hate that rule!

I love the yellow card. Every play a yellow card could be pulled out for an embellishment play. It is amazing how these players bounce back after they are knocked down. A lot of rubbing takes place and then they're back. I don't know how they can recover that quickly. It is incredible.

The U.S. still simply doesn't have the talent to compete with the big boys. Lots of heart and lots of very hard work, but the quality is just not there and probably won't be there any time soon. There's simply no place for young U.S. players to properly develop without going abroad.

I am so nervous for Brasil, this **** is too much. Futebol the only sport I can ever love more than hockey... and it was my first love- yet I think it's all of brasil's first love.
I can't handle all this stress ahhhhhhhhh Brasil did it without Pele hopefully they can without Neymar.. and Thiago Silva (losing Silva may hurt more than Neymar out)

Argentina beat W. Germany in 1986 in North America (Mexico).
W. Germany beat Argentina in 1990 in Europe (Italy).
This year's final is in the Americas, so Argentina should win, right?? Possibly, but not likely. I'm thinking the Germans prevail (I'm not a fan of either team).

Germany always look a defensive calamity away from making a deciding mistake that could hand it to Argentina. Argentina have been excellent defensively and Mascherano seems to be everywhere on the pitch. I actually am going for a 2-0 Argie win, one defensive error from Germany followed my a counter attack goal when Germany have to chase the game.

Argentina's defense hasn't faced a midfield and strike force as formidable as the Germans.

Well Germany made the defensive calamity but Higuain completely mucked it up. Would have been interesting to see if Germany could have come back had he scored considering Argies would have shut up shop. Messi looked embarrassed to get player of the tournament, not sure what people were thinking there.
