Tony Iommi Mulls Possible Tom Jones Collaboration (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tony-iommi-tom-jones/)

A classic April Fool’s joke perpetrated by Kerrang! Magazine in the ’80s may end up leading to a real-life collaboration between pop legend Tom Jones and Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi.

The gag, which ran in Kerrang!’s April 1988 issue, suggested that Jones was about to join the Sabbath lineup for a concept album and tour. The new songs were supposedly to tell the story of a minotaur’s visit to a Welsh mining town, with the live shows to be called the Minotaur/Miner Tour. The whole thing was a funny bit of leg-pulling, especially given Sabbath’s problems with hanging onto a vocalist at the time, and occasionally the band’s message boards still include messages from fans who fell for it.

As it turns out, the people who thought a Tom Jones-fronted Sabbath sounded like an intriguing idea may end up having the last laugh after all. Classic Rock Magazine reports that Iommi’s been in touch with Jones lately, and after sharing a laugh over the Kerrang! prank, they’ve mulled the possibility of doing something together in the studio.

“I’ve met Tom a few times,” Iommi told the magazine, adding, “We were talking one day and he said, ‘Did you ever see that thing in the press about me joining you guys?’ I said ‘Yes, I did,’ and he said, ‘It’s not a bad idea, is it?’ I like Tom, he’s good. I’d actually like to do something with him. It could work.”

Primus Going Willy Wonka For New Album and Tour ::Primus News ::antiMusic.com (http://www.antimusic.com/news/14/July/30Primus_Going_Willy_Wonka_For_New_Album_and_Tour. shtml#.U9kSI_ldV8E)

A small issue like a drummer's heart attack isn't going to hold Primus back from their lofty plans. The trio's frontman Les Claypool told Rolling Stone that, despite the fact that drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander recently went under the knife for open heart surgery in the wake of his heart attack, he's expected to be behind the kit for their next tour, which starts in October.
What that kit will look like is another story: Claypool describes his percussion setup for the band's upcoming album, Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble, wasn't a drum set, strictly speaking, but more like "A giant circle, or a pile of things to bang on."

"He's so musical at what he does, and he can be very orchestral when he wants to be, and taking him off a traditional kit just brought forth these sounds that we've just never gotten from him before," Claypool said. "If you saw this kit, you'd laugh your ass off. He couldn't get in and out of it. We'd open up a portion of it and shove him in there and then lock him in with other pieces of things."

The album itself is a tribute to the classic 1971 musical film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder (and not, he points out, the 2005 remake directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp: both artists are talented, he said, but "But like all human beings, every now and then, we crap in our pants").

The album is due on Oct. 21, with the band kicking off a tour the following night at the Tower Theater in Pennsylvania. Perhaps equally as exciting will be the return of the Primus candy bars made by Pennsylvania's Asher's Chocolates - which were originally created for a New Year's Eve concert - including Mr. Krinkle (crisped rice), Professor Nutbutter (peanuts) and Bastard Bar (dark chocolate).

ANNNNND takemymoney.

GWAR Reveal Lineup Reboot, New Tunes + North American Tour (http://loudwire.com/gwar-drummer-lineup-reboot-new-material-north-american-tour/)

Brad Roberts recently spoke with Metal Insider about GWAR’s future, which at the moment includes new releases, a reboot of GWAR’s lineup and a 2014 North American tour:

We have Mike Bishop, the original Beefcake bass player of Gwar. He’s coming back to fold to do some singing duties, but Balsac, Pustulus, Beefcake, they’re all singing. Cyborg, Destructo, Bone Snapper, all the Gwar characters have songs to fill in, and we’ve kind of taken the idea back to the original, old school, Scumdogs idea. Where Oderus, he was just the anchor, there were so many characters and so many different people singing songs, and so much action and gore and death on the stage in the old days that it wasn’t like it was more recently, where we stripped away all of that and made Oderus the focal point. The old Scumdogs of Gwar, there’s chaos everywhere, and Oderus is just the anchor to it.

So we’re kind of going back to the old format, embracing it. The stage shows will be wilder, and more chaos probably than you’ve seen in a lot of years. We kind of stripped it away into a pretty good heavy metal band that had some cool gore to it, and I think it’s gonna be more involved now. Certainly all of the plot development that we’ve done for the upcoming shows and the tours is leading it that way. It’s really exciting, it’s interesting. I think people are going to respond to it.

No one would respect us if we just threw another guy in the costume and said “Oh here’s Oderus’ replacement.” There is no way to replace Dave Brockie, not in a million years. We decided to go back to our roots and get back the old members and reconvene as a creative collective and put forth the Gwar that we think is going to be the incarnation of it for the 30th anniversary and beyond.

The original editorial
Henry Rollins: **** Suicide | West Coast Sound | Los Angeles | Los Angeles News and Events | LA Weekly (http://www.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2014/08/21/henry-rollins-****-suicide)

And the apology
Henry Rollins Apologizes For Comments About Robin Williams' Suicide (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/henry-rollins-apology-robin-williams-suicide/)

I find Henry Rollins to be a well thought out person with a definite opinion. His comments were borderline but some of them, including 'you forfeit the right to suicide once you have children' were spot on regardless of the insensitivity many accused him of. It's not like Gene Simmons who basically said anyone with depression should just 'kill themselves'. I get that people were offended. It's a tough subject to discuss. But this overblown sense of moral outrage that has forced Rollins to buckle and apologize accomplishes nothing and is just another example of the decay of America. You DON'T have to like someone else's opinion. You DON'T have to agree with someone's opinion. But badgering them into submission and making them retract said opinion is why nothing actually gets discussed anymore. We are so busy telling each other what to think that no contrary opinions are allowed anymore. I don't agree with a lot of stuff. But I would rather argue the points with owners of those opinions rather than just telling them to 'shut-up and follow'. Change someone's mind by proving your point.

My vote is for Live or Bush. Live made two great albums and then pretty much crashed and burned. Bush made the same bad song over and over, but the lead singer managed to get with Gwen Stefani. And... they're both losing because people are voting for the most famous band in each case, not the most 90's band.

ucsdguy1
March 17th, 2015, 10:10 AM
I'm totally biased but have a soft spot for soul asylum. They were that total mix between "look at our angst" but our music isn't so angry and hard sounding. The singer dated winona ryder (date an alternative quasi famous girl is so 90s). And they had a song personify Clerks which is yet another cult classic. And I freakin love them.

I don't like soul asylum vs. stp in the first round. both have strong merits to make it into later rounds.

when all was said and done i couldn't take temple of the dog over bush.

Also mediated a heated argument between two friends last night over whether the winner of this bracket should have no cultural relevance outside the 90s (i contend there is room on both sides of the argument)

So I got to:

Luc SkyBomba

they should've had kid n play, digital underground, etc... but i guess early 90s are just an extension of the 80s. anyway i had Soul Asylum win too, over the Fugees

Good job actually filling the entire thing out, ucsd. You are probably right about the Spice Girls for the pop division - they were the biggest thing in the world for a few years in the middle of the 90s and then imploded. They had their own movie, which is more than I can say for Smash Mouth. But, none of these pop groups or rappers can make it to the top, the 90s were all about whiners in lumberjack outfits.

Pretty sure the Offspring made it well out of the 1990s.

I was very lucky I got to see STP when not only did they have Scott Weiland in the band, but he was actually sober.

Donde esta Nirvana and Pearl Jam? I know for a fact that Nirvana didn't make it out of the 90s.

ucsdguy1
March 18th, 2015, 09:57 AM
I could also make a strong argument for Alice in Chains. But I guess death of a singer isn't 90's enough.

Pearl Jam at least gets somewhat of a nod with soungarden in Temple of the Dog....I guess..

Luc SkyBomba
March 18th, 2015, 10:07 AM
the link explains why they left out nirvana, pearl jam and tupac, etc... i mean if they did include AIC i wouldn't even read the bracket and they'd win

KingInTheWest
March 18th, 2015, 09:19 PM
According to their guidance, the goal is to find the band that "typify[ies] everything about the decade, both musically and culturally". Grunge defined the 90s, musically and culturally, more than anything else, and Nirvana and Pearl Jam defined grunge, more than anything else. Of course, the same paragraph also calls Nirvana great musicians, but maybe the plural meant Grohl and some of the members of Weezer.

Juliette Lewis Is The Lead Singer Of Metal Supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra
http://uproxx.com/music/2015/03/juliette-lewis-is-the-lead-singer-of-metal-supergroup-giraffe-tongue-orchestra/

Actress Juliette Lewis, the star of such stone-cold classics as Cape Fear, Natural Born Killers, and future masterpiece Jem and the Holograms, is also a singer, having released three albums with her troupe Juliette and the Licks. They sound like 30 Seconds to Mars meets Karen O’s stylist, but Lewis is stepping in with another band, a metal supergroup with members of Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Dethklok, and The Mars Volta called Giraffe Tongue Orchestra.

12 Tears For One Cent: Columbia House Is No More (http://www.salon.com/2015/08/12/r_i_p_columbia_house_cheap_disposable_music_lives_ on_but_the_one_club_to_which_everyone_could_belong _is_finally_broke/)

WTF? This was still alive???

On Monday, the Wall Street Journal broke the news that the current owners of Columbia House had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The court documents told a sad tale: The company, Filmed Entertainment Inc.—whose owner, Pride Tree Holdings Inc., had purchased Columbia House in 2012—currently has zero employees and $63 million in debt, and only $2 million in assets. Its net revenue in 2014 was just $17 million. Perhaps more revealing, however, was the fact that Columbia House—which for years was known as the place to order records, tapes or CDs at the bargain deal of (depending on the era and format) eight or 12 for a penny—still has a mail-order DVD club with 110,000 members.

Da fuq?

Incredibly, rumors of Columbia House’s permanent demise are decidedly exaggerated. As part of the bankruptcy protection filing, Filmed Entertainment Inc. wants to try to sell off the club’s assets. According to The Wall Street Journal, there’s quite a bit of interest, to the tune of 20 prospective buyers; in fact, FEI “is currently in active discussions with at least one of them.” When all is said and done, Columbia House may yet live another day and end up as the cockroach of the media industry, alive and kicking long after tangible media ceases to be a dominant influence.

Columbia House was good because they had most mainstream artists, but also tried to branch out. I got my first Skinny Puppy, Too Dark Park, from them. And I played it for the first time, lol, and said, what is this crap. Haha. It was abrasive and gave me a headache. But I listened to it a few times and eventually got and now I am a SP fan. A Pastor Blames Paris Shooting Victims For Attending A ‘Death Metal’ Concert
http://uproxx.com/music/2015/11/death-metal-pastor/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TzR3CEk73Q

A two-second Google search, or even a listen to any of their songs, will tell you that Eagles of Death Metal are not, in fact, a death metal band. It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, inspired by Josh Homme (who is not a queen, nor was he born in the stone age) calling Polish group Vader “the Eagles of death metal.” It’s Don Henley’s greatest contribution to music.

Unfortunately, Steven Anderson doesn’t have two seconds — he’s too busy writing hate speeches up his own ass. When the leader of the Faithful Word Baptist Church, who describe themselves as an “old-fashioned, independent, fundamental, King James Bible only, soul-winning Baptist church” (located in an Arizona strip mall), heard about what happened in Paris, his immediate reaction wasn’t to show compassion for the lives that were needlessly lost.

Instead, he came up with this:

“When you go to a concert of death metal, somebody might get killed! You know, you’re worshiping death! And then, all of a sudden, people start dying!… Well, you love death so much, you bought the ticket, you love worshiping Satan! Well, let’s have some of Satan’s religion come in and shoot you! (Via)

You know...you see the Pope, and his message of love and humanity...and just common sense and courtesy...and for a second, just for a second...you forget that most of the Jesus peddlers have subverted every possible good thing for their own propaganda. This man is no better than people who kill in the name of religion.

Agreed. Rumor is that Deep Purple members will show, not likely Ian Gillan and/or Blackmore. Jon Lord didn't live to see it(shameful). Mk 1 to Mk3 are the lineups being inducted, but there is a lot of hate there. Like Kiss, don't expect a musical performance, so kinda...what's the point?

BUN E CARLOS WILL 'MAKE NICE' AT ROCK HALL INDUCTION
http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-12-23/bun-e-carlos-will-make-nice-at-rock-hall-induction

Former Cheap Trick drummer Bun E Carlos says he will "make nice" to ensure the band's 2016 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame goes smoothly.

Carlos hasn't performed with the band since 2010 and admits "me and the singer don't get along very good," but he'll do whatever it takes to ensure the ceremony in New York on April 8 is a day for them all to remember.

Carlos tells Rolling Stone: "I'm assuming everybody is going to make nice. Me too. I have no agenda here. It's such a highlight day in your career. You should try not to wreck it.

"I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a gas. As I said, I have no revenge agenda. I won't be like, 'Let me set the record straight, people.' **** that."

While still technically a full member of Cheap Trick, Carlos had to sue the band for royalties. He says: "We just drew up a contract that said, 'I don't tour with the band, but I'm a full member of the band.'

"We've got all these corporations. The touring company said, 'If you quit touring, you lose your vote.' I wasn't going to let that happen. I'm a full member of the band. So we drew up a piece of paper, and a couple years later the cheques stopped coming. And then I had to sue them in federal court to get my money back. We did a settlement last spring and its all hunky dory. That's the short story."

Guitarist Rick Nielsen's son Daxx plays drums with Cheap Trick in Carlos' absence and the sticksman doesn't think that'll change. He adds: "I don't see it happening. Rick's kid got a gig here and dad loves that. I'm sure Rick would rather his kid gets paid than Rick supports his kid.

"Even besides that, any friendship we had went away when I had to file a federal lawsuit. That cost a bucket of ****ing money. Going after these guys wasn't pleasant. The friendship sort of frittered away there."

Is This Trailer More Evidence That The Original Guns N’ Roses Lineup Is Reuniting?
http://uproxx.com/music/2015/12/guns-n-roses-trailer-star-wars/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QopDUuxq3D4

As 2016 draws ever closer, one question continues to persist: are Guns N’ Roses reuniting? Earlier this year, we found out that after years of animosity, frontman Axl Rose and guitarist Slash had finally buried the hatchet, leading fans to logically wonder if the original lineup was going to reconvene. Now, a new video airing at screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has allowed those rumors to blossom even further.

There’s not really much to the video; it’s just a 15-second clip of a raucous crowd rocking out while G N’ R plays “Welcome To The Jungle.” So, it’s hardly enough to confirm that the reunion is taking place, but it does make that question even more urgent than it was before. Equally adding fuel to the fire is the news we reported earlier this week that the band’s website has recently been updated to feature the classic logo, while the band’s Facebook page has been updated to show a cheering crowd. None of this definitively means that the original lineup is going to reconvene, but they sure seem to be hinting at it very strongly.

Slash officially left Guns N’ Roses into 1996 due to animosity with Rose. The band has seen several members shuffle in and out since then, and in 2008, released the long-awaited Chinese Democracy, with Rose the only original member to appear on the record.

Report: Guns N’ Roses Will Head For A Stadium Near You After Coachella Reunion
http://uproxx.com/music/guns-n-roses-reunion/

The Hollywood Reporter believes, thanks to the grace of their sources, that rock legends Guns N’ Roses will, indeed, reunite at Coachella in April 2016 following weeks of speculation, bringing Axl Rose and Slash together for the first time since 1993. It’s being called the ultimate Bucket Head freeze out (by me, anyway) and a shocking development that many had hoped for, but that few had actually expected. Keep in mind, of course, that we’re a long way to April, though the band isn’t merely looking at this as a one-off according to the same report.

I remember I bought Cure for Pain after reading John Popper from Blues Traveler raving about it. I found the quote - "A friend of mine put it on and I couldn’t move or speak until it was over. It was so powerful that I’ve started smoking cigarettes again. Goddammit, find them!” I think I even got it via Columbia House so it took a while before it was delivered (ahh...the good old days before instant gratification) and I put it in and was completely blown away. To this day I don't think I've ever been that immediately impacted by an album on the first listen. Listening to them was also my gateway to jazz, which I will always be thankful for. I only got to see them once, and they were amazing. I had tickets to their upcoming show in LA when Sandman died in Italy on stage. They'll probably always be in my top 5 bands.

Sacha Baron Cohen Explains Why He Left the Freddie Mercury Biopic

“[After] my first meeting, I should never have carried on because a member of the band —I won’t say who— said, ‘This is such a great movie, because such an amazing thing happens in the middle of the movie.’ I go, ‘What happens in the middle of the movie?’ He goes, ‘Freddie dies.’ I go, ‘So you mean it’s a bit like ‘Pulp Fiction,’ where the end is the middle and the middle is the end? That’s interesting.’ He goes, ‘No no no.’ So I said, ‘Wait a minute. What happens in the second half of the movie?’ And he said, ‘Well, we see how the band carries on from strength to strength.’ And I said, ‘Listen, not one person is going to see a movie where the lead character dies from AIDS and then you carry on to see [what happens to the band].”

"Lush forced to postpone US tour dates, Coachella appearance due to visa issues"

Bummer , they postponed their show at the Roxy on Thursday to 4/25.

I saw Lush play their first show in LA , maybe in the US at Club Lingerie back in the day .

I've seen them a few times over the years . I knew they broke up but didn't know they had not played a gig in 20+years .

Guess I'm that old geezer at shows now .

With (most of) N.W.A, Ice Cube insists he's still a gangsta at Coachella (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-coachella-ice-cube-nwa-20160417-story.html)

“But we at Coachella,” he added, before bringing out Ren and Yella — but not Dre — to do a blistering “Straight Outta Compton.” The partially reunited group also did its unprintably titled song about the police, which Ice Cube said he’d been warned backstage against playing, as well as “Dopeman,” which also featured his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., who played Ice Cube in “Straight Outta Compton.”

Are they going to be putting any new material out, do you know?

Here's the link to new song , out on 4/22 (maybe just in UK)

Enjoy!

Due out through their own Edamame label, Blind Spot was recorded last summer alongside producers Daniel Hunt of Ladytron and Jim Abbiss. It features four brand new tracks, including dreamlike opener ?Out of Control?

They have some east coast dates in the fall in like 500-1500- cap venues so hopefully they will book the Fonda or Echoplex, El Rey here in town

Steve Miller: This Whole Industry Is F--kin' Gangsters and Crooks
Rocker blasts Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, record labels and music industry in candid Q&A (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/steve-miller-this-whole-industry-is-f--kin-gangsters-and-crooks-20160411)

'Nice Guy' Steve Miller Talks Rock Hall Rancor, Who He Wishes Had Inducted Him and How He'd Fix the Whole 'Rude' Process (http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7333970/steve-miller-rock-roll-hall-fame-interview)

I totally missed this when it went down. Actually, I have never paid much attention to the Rock Hall, except for when Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley sort of trashed the process. Even then, I only realized it, because of jd's posts here on LGK.

Now comes Steve Miller being even more direct about his dissatisfaction. I didn't see in either of these two articles, but apparently, the Rock Hall allowed for tickets for Miller and his wife, but wanted to charge Miller's band member $10K each if they wanted to sit at Miller's table and watch the ceremony. This is in addition to the other problems the article(s) bring up. Actually, the second article is the one with the information; the first is just Miller's initial backstage tirade about the evening's event and Rock Hall board specifically and the entire recording industry in general.

Steve Miller was terrific. No filter whatsoever. And screw the Black Keyes for getting all bent. He had no idea who they were and that was who was inducting him. While they finally corrected some wrongs this year, it really should be removed from the people in charge's hands. Just too many mistakes.

Rage Against the Machine have launched a cryptic countdown clock on a new website, Prophetsofrage.com.

The countdown leads to June 1st.

If the user writes in their email address, they’ll be taken to an image reading, “Clear the way for the prophets of rage,” which is a Public Enemy lyric from the song “Prophets of Rage.”

The hashtag, #TakeThePowerBack, is from a Rage Against the Machine song.

As of right now prophetofrage.com has so much traffic, the website can’t be reached!

There have also been reports of the image plastered around L.A., and Chuck D has taken to tweeting some videos of the band performing live in 2010.

Meh not quite

Recently, Rage Against the Machine -- inactive since 2011 -- launched a website counting down to June 1, adorned with #TakeThePowerBack, which also appeared on posters displayed around their hometown of Los Angeles. Naturally, people wondered if Rage was getting back together.

Well, not quite. ProphetsOfRage.com (a website that is no longer loading, as of press time) is actually proclaiming a whole new group. Sources tell Billboard that three-quarters of the storied band -- guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk -- are joining forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets of Rage (referencing a Public Enemy song of the same name from the 1988 album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back) to perform songs by all three bands. Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is not involved.

Rage Against the Machine Was Mocking Donald Trump's Presidential Run 16 Years Ago

The band's debut is set for Hollywood Palladium on June 3, with a show at L.A.'s Whisky a Go Go planned as well. A 2016 summer tour is also being considered.

Rage Against the Machine’s full lineup has not performed since a July 2011 show at L.A. Rising fest.

Worth noting: With election season ramping up, these self-anointed prophets should have plenty of rage to pull from.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Skeleton Tree first-listen review – a masterpiece of love and devastation (https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/sep/09/nick-cave-and-the-bad-seeds-skeleton-tree-first-listen-review-a-masterpiece-of-love-and-devastation)

There aren’t many, if any, precedents, but Eric Clapton’s 1991 song Tears in Heaven was written in response to the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, also from a fall. But where Clapton found some comfort in ideas of heavenly reunions and eventual peace, Cave finds no such salvation or solution. In fact, one of Skeleton Tree’s most powerful statements is its rejection of God and notions of easy healing, happy endings or even meaning.

I made it through to this one before losing it.

I tweeted that song, that is, Distant Sky, today. It's the song from the album that has connected with me the most so far. I have been listening to that album between things today. I'll have to set some time to listen to it in silence. A silence filled only with music. ;)

But yeah, I have been listening to that album, and in true Orphy nature, when one of my favorite artists releases an album, I listen to said new album and a bunch of that artist's work.

It's a time to rejoice.
