View Full Version : New Season of South Park

Enjoyed the first episode from the new season.....not a home run but enjoyable-particularly for those who can see and understand the subtle humor references being aluded to(Dan Snyder as the Crying Indian from the old PSAs). Once again while not a home run by any stretch- the revamping of the Redskins logo shold be enough to offend more of the easily offended if not outright make some heads explode if by chance that image every happened to go viral. The subtext with Kickstarter was clever as well...Personally they could have done more with the Redskin and Kickstarter woman in the elevator-Im thinking there a Ray Rice joke there for the taking.

Any thoughts?

Sorry but SP needs to learn from Adult Swim. If that episode had been 15 minutes it would have been classic. But the boys seem to get all their venom and on point commentary out in the first half...then they have to 'write' the second half. The last 15 minutes of that episode was a circular rehash of the first 15. Wasn't as funny or clever the second or third time.

Apparently these days kids watch random other semi-ordinary kids who steadily release videos on YouTube. The 'stars' have hundreds of thousands of regular videos and are semi-celebrities. There are conventions where these people are the attraction and get mobbed. I don't get it at all, which is the next sign that I'm old.

I love the continuity this season, especially Randy as Lorde.

I loved the Wendy Williams diss. I don't get Pewdiepie fans either, but I'm not going to knock that generation of kids for being fans of his when our generation likes things that are equally as dumb. It's like how kids who watch Smosh will become future watchers of SNL or Jimmy Fallon.

Just to play the role of spoiler here...the only 'highlight' of that 2 part season ender was Matt and Trey saying 'even I have no idea what is going on here anymore' through Stan and Kyle. Just meandering. Not even enough to fill one episode, much less two. Although the cops breaking up every time the one guy said 'this black guy walked into the station...' was pretty damned funny. Just running on fumes at this point. Or maybe I am just being a grandpaw.

Haven't you been saying this for years now?

I give them major props for flipping the script and trying something totally new with their string of continuity and season-long storylines this year, something they've never done before. Reinventing the show, hit or miss, is pretty much the opposite of running on fumes in my opinion.

They do seem to be grasping a bit, I agree. At least they're aware of it. It seems like shows that cut their teeth on the edge like South Park and It's Always Sunny can only be edgy for so long. I give both shows some props for trying to evolve, but I'm not sure they'll ever be what they were.

Not that that will stop me from watching either of them forever.

Before last night's premiere they showed a bunch of South Park episodes, which were mostly hilarious. Compared to those, the premiere wasn't as good. It was funny of course. Matt and Trey's response is great: “We’ve taken a hard look at the information presented to us, and after reviewing it, we have given Yelp and their lawsuit only one star. Their lawyers delivered us legal documents in a very unprofessional manner; not bothering to smile or even a quick handshake. The writing on the envelope was barely legible and in two different colors. It is our personal opinion that Yelp could do a much better job by not suing us for ten million dollars.”

The Simpsons haven't been occasionally entertaining since 2000, tops. I agree South Park may have peaked, but current SP and current Simpsons shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. One is as you put still entertaining, while the other is the TV show equivalent of Lenin's tomb. It's surreal that I can still see new Simpsons today, because just like the former communist leader the Simpsons have been dead longer than they were alive.

Do you actually watch the Simpsons every week? It's become far too easy to dismiss. And yes, there hit to miss ratio is trending the wrong way, but the past few seasons they have actually managed to occasionally tweak things. The recent pre Halloween episode was one of the better ones in recent years. MAYBE, South Park's success rate is higher, but they have been around what 18 seasons to the Simpsons 30(?). South Park's biggest problem of late is that the topical anger that used to flow so easily seems forced and tired. It happens. There was no way that either of the shows could have maintained the standard they set. Simpsons should still be respected if for nothing else, their longevity.

And the Simpsons isn't forced and tired?!!

No I haven't seen any of this season's episodes, but I highly doubt there's been some sort of seismic change in the writing that has turned the course the Simpsons has been on for the better part of 15 years. I do occasionally watch the newer episodes, and I agree the last few seasons are better than the steaming pile of garbage that was produced between seasons 13 and season...I don't know like 20, or 21? Still if you want to talk about tired and forced, the forced sentimentality of the very recent seasons is surreal to watch because these are characters I use to care for, but now come off as one dimensional parodies of themselves. That's the truly sad part about the Simpsons today, not so much the sappy writing of the newer seasons that's trying to recreate the sentimentality of the first three seasons, but that the show is now a blank parody of its former self.

While I do agree with you that at times South Park seems kind of forced that they have to talk about something topical, it's still nowhere near as bad as the depression fueled level of crapiness the Simpsons has been on for this entire millennium. As pretty much most of the internet has been saying for a long while, the problem with the Simpsons stems with Matt Groening, Al Jean, and pretty much everyone else who works for that show who clearly only care about keeping the gravy train going. You can say what you want about Matt Stone and Trey Parker, yes maybe their interest is starting to shift to things outside of South Park, but at the very least you can tell that they still kind of care about the fans of the show.

To an extent South Park still exists within the zeitgeist, and its satire on today's society can still produce a good laugh or two. The Simpsons use to be that so long ago, but now exists outside the zeitgeist while at the same time acting like it's the leader of contemporary animation. It's really bizarre to watch because when newer Simpsons tries to act contemporary, or meta, or edgy, it comes off as really cold hearted and insanely out of touch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX1iplQQJTo

And that's the perfect description of the Simpsons, it's an insanely out of touch show. I think I speak for most of the Simpsons fans who grew up religiously worshiping that show, and still do worship the 90's golden era of the show. F*** you Matt Groening, you greedy bastard! F*** you for ruining something I use to hold so dear just so you could buy another private jet, and f*** you for trying to ruin Futurama as well!

the way he crosses his arms with hands under his arm pits is total vintage.

Ok, so it isn't just me. With Matt & Trey you never know if it's a compliment or an insult.

This isn't real right?

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on last night’s episode of Comedy Central’s “South Park”:

The October 3rd episode of “South Park,” titled “A Boy and a Priest,” portrayed molesting priests as pedophiles. This is factually inaccurate: almost all the molesters–8 in 10–have been homosexuals. Therefore, the cartoon-victim characters should have been depicted as adolescents, not kids.

In Hollywood, the creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are seen as courageous. They are really cowards. It takes courage to tell the truth.

The group then posted the email address of Steve Albani, Comedy Central’s senior vice president of communications. The network declined to comment on the League’s statement.
