HBO to Offer Stand-Alone Web Subscription in U.S. Next Year - Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-15/hbo-to-offer-stand-alone-online-subscription-in-u-s-next-year.html)

How much will it cost? Will there be same day premieres as the cable/satellite versions or will those be delayed? Many questions.

The first shot in the war on cable has officially been fired.

The move pits the premium channel, whose shows routinely draw Emmy nominations and water-cooler buzz, directly against Netflix Inc. (NFLX), which has begun to draw viewers with original programs like “Orange Is the New Black.”

I don't know that they could directly compete until they have much more programming available. But it's definitely something I'd be interested in. My free HBO period ends this month and I planned on canceling. It's not worth the monthly price for the limited movie releases, just to wait for Game of Thrones a few weeks out of the year. Although 47 Ronin was AWESOME (that might have been cinemax).

Isn't this getting crazy though with internet streaming companies signing exclusive deals for movies/shows or original programming? I mean to pay for monthly membership to netflix, amazon prime, hulu plus, hbo go, I feel like I'd almost be paying as much if not more than cable! (almost). At least cable is sort of centralized?

There is the argument con...it's gonna be a wild world out there. HBO being the test case certainly makes it BIG BOY vs BIG BOY rules. How does cable react? Do they threaten to pull HBO from it's subscribers? The only one who gets hurt there is cable. What happens if a couple of the content providers who might not do so good on their own(Starz, Epix...for example) decide to package their streaming content? There will be lawsuits and much gnashing of teeth, hopefully the end result will be good for the consumer, as unlikely as that may be.

I read a different article on this that said the price would be the same for service through cable or if it's stand alone. HBO will make more money selling directly with stand alone, but said they won't undercut cable providers.

From my understanding...until Fx got their ducks in a row as far as streaming options, the show creators were allowed to pursue their own options. Fairly considerate if you ask me. Now, I wonder how the Hulu thing is gonna go. Are they going to do like they do with broadcast shows and have the new eps on Hulu shortly after airing? Or is this going to be like on Netflix where they post em up shortly after the season blu/dvds come out? I HAVE to assume thats the case with FxNow getting more coverage(you did have TWC right notbob, cause we have access now...)
The weird thing is Hulu is kinda known...waitaminnit, gotsta read my own crap...

Under the new deal, much like the one AMC currently holds with Netflix, any series Hulu has exclusivity to will become available to viewers just prior to the premiere of a new season. So, for example, season one of The Strain will stream right before season two begins, etc…

Nevermind.

You Can Soon Stream ESPN on the Web for $20 a Month

http://gizmodo.com/you-can-now-stream-espn-on-the-web-for-20-a-month-1677531245

Sports has been one of the last great hold-outs of cord cutting, but now a little progress is being made in the right direction—soon, you'll be able to get live sports without a cable subscription, too. Dish's new web TV service will let you stream ESPN for 20 bucks a month.

Re/code reports that Dish's new offering, dubbed Sling TV (coming soon), will also give you access to Food Network, CNN, and the Travel channel, among 10 channels for the flat rate of 20 dollars. Sling TV only works for one user at a time, so if you plan on handing out your password to your friends like you do with Netflix, well, that dog just won't hunt. This service is ideal for laptop or tablet watching. Although, you will be able to stream Sling TV to your actual TV, but you'd have to do that via a Web TV box, a la Fire TV or Roku (but not Apple TV, apparently).

I believe it is only for ESPN. It is a start but ultimately what I see happening when everything is streaming, we will still be paying the same or increased price for what we want to watch.

Amazon Studios To Produce & Acquire Original Movies For Theatrical Release And Distribution On Amazon Prime Instant Video (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/amazon-studios-to-produce-acquire-original-movies-for-theatrical-release-and-distribution-on-amazon-prime-instant-video-20150119)

Amazon Studios has announced they will produce and acquire original films for theatrical release and, of course, for their Amazon Prime Instant Video service. Even more, the company has hired respected producer Ted Hope ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "21 Grams," "In The Bedroom," "The Ice Storm") to lead their Amazon Original Movies division, bringing the endeavor an instant level of industry credibility and veteran experience.

Amazon has big plans, aiming to release up to twelve movies per year, with the first slated to arrive by the end of 2015.

This is all just good news, in my opinion. More competition, easier access.

BOSCH: Review
http://collider.com/bosch-review/

Bosch is Amazon’s first drama, but it treads on familiar ground. The 10-episode series pulls its material from several detective novels by Michael Connelly, who also developed the series and shares a writing credit with The Wire‘s Eric Overmyer. Bosch stars Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch (yes, like the 15th century apocalyptic painter Hieronymus Bosch), an LAPD homicide detective. There is no other pretension here, though — Bosch is the hardest of hard-boiled cops, and the case that will likely dominate this first season is as grisly as can be imagined.

Though Bosch is the latest TV iteration of a brilliant/rogue murder cop, Bosch is a throwback in every possible way. A rookie says to him that working in homicide is one of the last noble professions, and as Bosch himself says later to a prosecutor who is working on behalf of a family suing him for a wrongful death suit, “I need to work. This is the work I do.” The show is an homage to an old kind of tough cop, without tipping too far into noir.

Read some of the books, good stuff. Like Welliver and Lance Reddick is in it too. Knew when I saw the billboards I was gonna have to give this a go.

Really poor decision by hbo. Going to cost them millions probably. With brand loyalty, people aren't going to spend $70 to get a device they don't want. Couple that with obviously launching (and being exclusive) with the run of GoT, and they just decide to leave that money on the table? Really, really silly choice as people will continue to pirate and then sub next year for the next season.

Streaming: Hulu Ad-Free Service Announced; Support Ended for Older Rokus (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/09/02/streaming-hulu-ad-free-service-announced-support-ended-for-older-rokus/)

Going ad-free will cost $12 a month versus the standard $8 fee and certain series — including ABC’s Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Agents of Shield, the NBC series Grimm and Fox’s The New Girl — will contain what Variety calls “a 15-second preroll ad and followed by a 30-second post-roll ad.” Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins says these exceptions were unavoidable as those seven programs “have other commitments that they couldn’t free them up for a complete commercial-free offering.”

In other streaming news, Variety also reports Roku devices made between May 2008 and May 2011 will no longer be supported by the company. If you happen to own, say, a Roku XD, you will no longer be able find new channels, receive firmware updates or hope for an update to the antiquated Netflix menu system on that particular device.

According to a statement, the company said, “Over time, our channel partners have also chosen to focus their development efforts on the latest generation of Roku streaming players.” They also cite hardware limitations of the older models as part of the move.

Needed a new show for my lunch time breaks.

Started The Man in the High Castle. Must've been good because I'm tense and can feel my blood pressure raised a little.

Need to figure out exactly who everyone is, but (1) very interesting concept, (2) I can't quite tell which on the Japanese side might be good, or still might be bad, and (3) I want to start taking Haikkido (or however it's spelled) lessons.

Man possibilities on where this goes. I'm looking forward to the full season!

Man oh Man. Just finished the man in the high castle. I haven't enjoyed anything that much in a long time.

Beautiful. Amazing touch to who is good vs. who is evil, adding juuust a little humanity and decency to characters you feel should be 100% villains. Very good acting and character development.

I didn't read the book (and kind of don't want to so as not to ruin anything that might lead into a second season). But the end of episode 9 and through the finale, WTF and wowzers. Big thumbs up for me.

I haven't watched the series yet, but just from the previews and reading what other people said, it looks like the book and the show have almost nothing in common beyond the premise of the Axis winning WWII.

It's a great book!

Hulu Might Lose the Best Reason to Pay for Hulu (http://www.slashfilm.com/hulu-next-day-streaming/)

News surfaced today that Time Warner is currently considering purchasing 25% of Hulu. That doesn’t sound bad right? Maybe that means their network HBO would start putting content on Hulu, and Warner Bros. Pictures and Television would start adding their movies and TV shows to the streaming service? Nope. Instead, Time Warner wants to buy part of Hulu so they can stop the service from steaming network and premium shows the day after they air on television. **** just got real.

The report comes from The Wall Street Journal (via Polygon), and here’s the relevant part of the Time Warner Hulu story:

Time Warner believes that the presence of full, current seasons on Hulu—or anywhere else outside the bounds of pay-TV—is harmful to its owners because it contributes to people dropping their pay-TV subscriptions, or “cutting the cord.”

In the discussions about taking a 25% equity stake in Hulu, Time Warner has told the site’s owners that it ultimately wants episodes from current seasons off the service, at least in their existing form, although that is not a condition for its investment, according to the people familiar with the discussions.

It's a good thing that The Man in the High Castle is getting renewed 'cause that series left too much stuff up in the air! :O

I thought that it was really good and TENSE. It also made me realize that despite my Asian Fetish, haha, living in a Japanese California might not be a very good thing. Then again, the Ramen would be better. ;)

The series takes the premise of the novel, but goes into other directions and makes it work. It would have to deviate since the only one who would stretch a 300 page novel into ten hours and call it a straight adaptation would be Peter Jackson. mhihi:

Redbox Could Launch Streaming Service (https://variety.com/2016/digital/news/redbox-digital-streaming-service-planned-1201738354/)

But while Redbox Instant aimed to challenge Netflix with a subscription bundle, the company now seems to have more modest plans. Redbox Digital is being built as a video-on-demand store similar to iTunes, Vudu or Google Play. Consumers will be able to rent movies or TV show episodes for streaming, or purchase digital copies.

Design concepts of the service that have surfaced online show a tight integration with the existing Redbox service. Redbox users will find the digital content store as a tab on the Redbox website, next to existing tabs for movies and games, if the company follows through with the plans laid out in those images.

The service would also plug into Redbox’s existing loyalty program, allowing consumers to earn points with every digital rental or purchase. There are plans to integrate the service directly into Redbox’s mobile apps, and extend support to TV-connected platforms like Chromecast and Roku.

I think they have a bad plan, but also some nice potential advantages.

The worst part of their plan (that I hope they don't truly believe) is:

When DirectTV Now was announced earlier this spring, Stephenson called it "a game changer," saying that it would appeal to the estimated 20 million households that don't currently pay for TV service.

Curated on the regular by Sam Zimmerman and Colin Geddes, Shudder offers a wide-ranging, international catalogue of horror films throughout the history of film. For the record, this isn’t a sponsored post or anything, I’m just a big fan of the service. In the Blockbuster days, I used to have to hunt films like these down online, and it’s pretty fabulous that now they’re just a click away.

For better or worse I finally did it. I am a cord cutter. It wasn't a clear cut conscious decision. I was a little perturbed that my bill with Frontier had gone up by $20/mo. I did a little research and decided to order Spectrum Internet for $40/mo and Directv Now for $35/mo. This will save me about $50/mo.

Directv Now has a promotion on right now with their $60 package for only $35. Supposedly, you get to keep that price for as long as you have that package and service. It has almost all the channels that I like and watch. It doesn't have all the local channels. In the LA market, it has ABC and Fox. NBC is available only on mobile and browsers <shrug>.

I started service last week. I haven't played around with it too much as Internet was installed last night and Frontier was cancelled. I can't say I am a fan of the guide but it gets the job done. No cloud based DVR but is supposed to be coming next year. Picture quality is excellent. I haven't had or used this service long enough to say it is good or bad. I know I will have change the way I watch tv but I think I can deal with that. I currently view it via an Amazon Fire TV. If you sign up for 3 months they send you an Apple TV.

And the important channels you want to know about.

Fox Sports West- Yes

NHL Network- Yes

Strongly considering switching from SlingTV to YTTV mainly because, unlike Sling, you get DVR capability. On the other hand, Sling gives more bang for the buck and versatility, such as paying less by foregoing ESPN. One thing to consider though is that YTTV doesn't offer The Turner/Viacom channels like TBS/TNT which may impact your MLB/NBA playoff viewing. The main thing holding me back right now is that MotoGP season just started and YTTV doesn't offer BeIn Sports, otherwise I'd be all over it just for the DVR aspect.

Just took the plunge on the Directv now. Since I am already an AT&T unlimited member it drops the price to $20 ($35 if I want FSW broadcasts) because of the $15 off plus get HBO. Going to drop total internet and TV bill from $160 to just around $100. Also prepaid the 4 months ($140) to get new Apple TV 4K TV free.

So far ok. Miss a couple of the sporting networks and still adjusting to non DVR but since I don?t watch much live (Except King?s and USC) it?s not bad so far specially since they have most shows on demand now. I am not a techie so can?t tell you picture quality and such. So far no real hiccups as far as watching.
