I heard rumor Dave Roberts was in the running (hah!) to manage?

http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2015/11/dave_roberts_blown_away_los_an.html

Dear Dodgers:

I would become a born-again die-hard fan if you do this.

Sincerely,

I don't understand the point of this thread. I can summarize the entire offseason for you: The Dodgers will spend another $4 Billion to lose in the playoffs again.

So, Kershaw is fed up with Puig's act. I'm shocked at that revelation.

I was a little skeptical on Dave Roberts, but so far I love his coaching philosophy:

Roberts, who said he will lean on Friedman and general manager Farhan Zaidi for help in the coaching search, laid out his ideal criteria for joining his staff.

"I want teachers. I think that sometimes people at this level get caught up in feeling we can just roll out the ball and let these guys play. I want teachers, and I want leaders, and I want guys around me who will challenge me, and help me grow. I'm going to do the same thing," Roberts said. "I want the players to know that the coaches around them are there to make them better, that they trust them, and they care about them. If a coach can check those three boxes, then I'm all in."

Greinke to the Dbacks for 6 years at $32.5M per. I wanted him back but I understand why the front office might think that's a risky deal for a 32 year old. And having Kershaw and Greinke didn't win us **** the past three years anyway. Time for a new strategy.

pb2k

Make that $34.3M. That's gonna be tough when he's 36.

Matching that contract would pay him 4 million per year more than Kershaw. The Dodgers were right to not do it.
Now go get Alex Fernandez for Puig and Cueto for cash.

Cueto is now the enemy, and they loaded up on more prospects in the Frazier deal.

You all aren't going to like me saying this, but honestly they shouldn't sign or trade for anybody. Sign the Japanese pitcher, and let those kids move up to the big leagues and take the hit for next year, IF it comes.

The Yankees were dominant for quite some time not because they signed a bunch of pricey Free Agents, but because the were able to develop Jeter/Williams/Posada/Pettite and then made signings and trades surrounding that core with and sustaining talent there. That won them 3 in 4 years, 5 Overall, and made them the Class of MLB for over a decade.

You're correct. The Dodgers are doing exactly what they said they would do. Spend money first, while they build up their prospect pool and organization. Then cut back the payroll (doing now) and let the young core players compete. If they ever feel they are close to getting to the WS they would then be able to pull off a trade for the missing piece.

That might be 2 or 3 trades and a couple of signings, it could be 5 to 7 more players.

Dee Gordon suspended 80 games for PEDs.

Now if they could just get Crawford and Kendrick so I don't have to watch them for 80 games that would be great.

They threw a boatload of cash at Darren O'Day only to have him go back to Baltimore!?!
Then they offered everybody who has ever pitched for anybody a spring training invite only to have them one by one break down or just flat out suck.
Even the guys they brought in last year, Jim Johnson and Avilan were decent until they came here.

I'd like to see an outfield of Thompson/Pederson/Puig all the time. Crawford is a waste and Kendrick playing LF is dumb. Get rid of Either when he's healthy enough to be traded.

pb2k
May 11th, 2016, 05:08 PM
Ethier got his 10 and 5 rights a few weeks ago so he can't be traded without his permission. He was pretty good last season any way so him and Thompson as a platoon in left works for me.

Dodgers took on Crawford's contract as a stipulation to get Gonzalez. He was injured at the time and wasn't expected to be a key contributor.

Considering the circumstances, he contributed far and beyond what most expected as a Dodger. I wish him well.

Grandal apparently has a hurt hand that they are for some reason letting him play through because it worked so well last season with his shoulder. It looks likes it might be getting better as he hasn't looked as bad the past little while. And Ellis can't hit to save his life either and at least Grandal is a good catcher so there really isn't much reason to not play him.

Sean Casey on facing Clayton Kershaw in 2008:

I only faced him one time. Actually, I was the first guy he ever faced in a spring training game. I turned to Terry Francona and was like, Whos this guy? And he shrugged and said, Hes some minor leaguer off the back fields.

First pitch comes in at 97 on the outside black. I dont even see it, I just hear a big thunk as it hits the catchers mitt. I look over at Joe Torre and hes cracking up in the dugout. And Im thinking, Who the hell is this guy?

Next pitch was a nasty knee-buckling hook for strike 2. I now look at the bench and Larry Bowa and Joe Torre are both laughing at me, and Im thinking to myself, They must know something I dont know.

The next pitch was strike 3, but the ump called it a ball. Next pitch, Kershaw throws a ridiculous hook on the outside corner, and that was called strike 3. I never pulled the trigger on any pitch. It was the first time I had felt like a little kid in the big leagues in a long time.

What a great anecdote. Well told. There's a link in the comments to Vin's call of that pitch: "What a curve ball! Holy mackerel! He just broke off public enemy number one!" Hahaha.

I don't get to many Dodgers games, but I was lucky enough to see Kershaw pitch live as a rookie. His wicked movement was obvious, even to a know-nothing like me, but his control issues were killing him, at least in the game I saw. Needless to say, if it ever was an issue, it is not now.

Dodgers Shut Down Clayton Kershaw Indefinitely, Might Be Screwed (http://deadspin.com/dodgers-shut-down-clayton-kershaw-indefinitely-might-b-1783963409)

Manger Dave Roberts spoke with reporters yesterday and revealed that Kershaw “didn’t feel great” the day after throwing, and won’t be throwing again until his back pain completely subsides. As for how that shifts the timeline for his eventual return, Roberts would only say that the situation is “uncertain.”

Before the game I was listening to the pregame radio show. David Vassegh said since Urias only pitched 1 inning since July 1, they were going to restrict his pitch count to 80.

They also want to save his arm for the bullpen for the rest of the season, so they want to limit his pitches.
