View Full Version : From Three Words: An Entertainment Quiz Game

Does anyone want to play a word game based on a Sporcle (http://www.sporcle.com/) quiz?

In this game, the answer will be a famous personality from entertainment. This could be an actor, director, cinematographer, producer, singer, music group, etc. The clues will be three words only, one each from three different works from the person (or group) in question.

The person asking the question, should include the following information regarding the answer:

1. Profession
2. One actual word each from the title three works by the person or group
3. The medium of each work (movie, TV, song, etc.)

The trick when making the question is finding words that are specific enough to guess the answer yet obscure enough to make it a challenge. Still, like the picture game, some things will be easier than others. For example, if I start with:

DIRECTOR:
Purple (movie)
Park (movie)
Encounters (movie)

The answer would be:

This is also one that looks like there is more than one answer. The words are a little generic. Iron Maiden is a valid answer:

Iron Maiden

From Here To Eternity

Still Life

The Evil That Men Do

So is [Jeff Lynne's] Electric Light Orchestra:
From the Sun to the World (or even Letter from Spain, or From the End of the World)
When Time Stood Still
Evil Woman

I think in a case like this if you have an answer you know you can defend, it doesn't have to be the one the question poster had in mind. Post your answer and move on with a new puzzle!

Seems like Chloe is the key to this one, but I don't know the answer.

It definitely can be the key. Two hints: followed the theme of the previous, and the words I used are the first in each song title.

Bonus hint: while this band may be somewhat obscure, after its break-up, a couple of its members went on to form another band with which almost everyone and their brother/sister/father/mother are familiar....

Well, looks like he might pass for a correct answer, but that's not who I am looking for. This is a band, and some additional hints would be that they broke up after the lead singer died of a drug overdose, just days before their first album was released. They are one of the earliest examples of a particular musical genre.

That's the one! One of the earliest grunge bands. Their lead singer, Andrew Wood, died of a heroin OD just days before their album, Apple, was to be released. One of their guitarists, Stone Gossard, and their bassist, Jeff Ament, subsequently went on to form Mookie Blaylock, before they eventually changed their name to.....Pearl Jam.

There was also a "supergroup" formed by members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, which recorded an album in tribute to Woods.

I totally cheated, but not really on purpose. Okay, maybe on purpose. I checked Liam Neeson because I thought I finally got one, and since I was already looking, I may have accidentally on purpose checked Scotsman. In my defense, I didn't see any rules so wasn't aware it could be cheating. I did feel guilty about it, if that helps. :5smile:

Gotta be the inimitable Ruth Gordon! I'm not sure about the mixing of disciplines, but it really works in this case, and, to me at least, Rib was a good key to go in the right direction. Plus, the mention of Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin is a very welcome one!!!

The other interesting thing about this puzzle is that it transitions into a different answer if you remove the "Writer" part. So, that's the next puzzle, which I'll put officially into my next post, for the sake of clarity.

Also, I think it's okay to use "ACTOR" in a gender-neutral sense for the sake of this puzzle. Maybe gender can be used as a hint.

I wasn't sure about the King Lear. I never knew it got a theatrical run. This is the same one as the Masterpiece Theatre show with Olivier and also Dame Diana Rigg (w00t!), yes? Great pedigree in these works even beyond Olivier! I love Guy Hamilton as much for Remo Williams as I do for James Bond. Seriously. And Herbert Ross does not get enough mention in general. Not to mention Nicholas Meyer! It might be time for another Wrath of Khan viewing.

I know the director, but not the actor. *sigh*

Anyway, yeah, making the actual puzzle can also be challenging and fun. A couple of times, I've tried to throw in a tough one on purpose, but for the most part I do not try to obfuscate the answer, especially if the answer is a director (who many people don't normally consider) or a sort of obscure answer. In those cases, I usually try to include one or two of the "hits" (relatively speaking). I also usually try to throw in a keyword (or two) that will make a good starting point for guesses. The thread turned into a challenge of obscurity fairly quickly, but the real spirit of the game is in the first puzzle where the answer is Spielberg. Turns out I really like some of the more obscure answers from this thread and the image quiz thread, because I've been turned on to some stuff I otherwise wouldn't know.

I've considered rooting through the thread and including a list of favorite puzzles in the original post, because there have been many gems, IMO.
