"Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember the Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old"

What party?

It's a sad day indeed. That lady made every song she covered better that the original and the original artists' were no slouches in their own right. I've been entertaining myself with what current artist that if she covered them, would turn the music world upside down. Right now, my answer is Wilco*.

*If infact they are still together.

She was a legend! A true talent! I will go as far to say American Royalty, even though that does not exist.

Yeah, I know, "what does a street punk like you know about her, or like her stuff!" I do, honestly!

And this hits sorta hard, because it close to the anniversary of the death of a great friend of mine, Wilton Felder. A member of the jazz band The Crusaders. When ever you hear "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5, it is him who played bass. I don't know for sure but I am pretty sure he had connections with Aretha. Either met her or played with her at some point for sure. He was so humble he would never brag, you had ask him what things he did. How did a street punk like me and a Jazz legend like Wilton Felder, who was 30 years older than me, become best pals? That is a long story. But we used hang out a lot and drink Newcastle together. I miss him like you would not believe. Still hang out with his wife, in fact, got card from her the other day thanking me for "adopting me"!

Just bummed out today, over Wilton and Aretha.

My best pal Wilton.

Aretha, she was awesome!

An BTW, major props to Orphy!!! For making this it's own thread, not a "All things" deal.

I had a free ticket to one of her shows in Las Vegas in 2004 and it was obvious that she was coming off a cold... In fact...she apologized for this the first thing before she sang... Even at 90% power...she could outperform anyone to this day...outside of most opera singers...
