Since I missed out on the Pappy and BTAC, I used the funds to buy a few that aren't available here. So far I've only opened the High West Rendezvous, which is a blend of 6 and 16yr ryes. As expected from H.W. it's excellent. The Whistlepig is next to be sampled... maybe tonight? Also stoked to try the Jefferson's as recommended by Azagthoth. What's interesting is that both Whistlepig and Jefferson's source their 10 yr rye from the same place--Alberta Distillers in Canada. Add to that they are both 100% rye. Really curious to see how similar they are--or aren't. At a glance there's an obvious difference in hue as well as price--the WP costs triple the other!
The Stagg Jr. Bourbon was the clear winner at the dinner/tasting I attended with Harlen Wheatley (Master Distiller of Buffalo Trace) as the speaker and guest of honor. It was a fun night and he is definitely one cool dude with one highly enviable occupation. But man, this whiskey is a BEAST. Look at the color! I think it's 136proof, but smooth as silk in spite of that. Can't wait to try it along side my George T. Stagg from last year's antique collection. At around $50 the Jr. is a STUPENDOUS value and is already becoming scarce. Shocking. ;)
