I've had Five Guys, and while quite good, it's hardly better than In N Out, and certainly not by any large margin. Plus there are hardly any around. Their fries are great in a more-grease-more-seasoning way, but you could have similar fries at Rally's.
ETA: I'd say Five Guys and In N Out are about even, with the tie breaker going to In N Out for being more accesible as well as a SoCal original.
in n out's fries suck. getting them well done does save them from being totally sucky, but the longer/double fry makes them sop up more grease. because of that, i can't eat a full order. last time i did that, i felt so sick. so i usually split an order of well done fries with my husband who doesn't mind because he's never been all that crazy about them either.
the last time i went to in n out though, we were on the road and i got seriously sick. really bad experience, i'm not likely to go back anytime soon. i was never really a burger person anyway unless it was made at home.

Market Grill in Monrovia does have kickass bacon burgers. unfortunately, their burgers are a bit oversized.
I cannot fathom the idea of putting Thousand Island dressing on a burger. It's disgusting and inhuman.
Having said that, I love In-N-Out without it.
The fries are ok.
Five Guys is huge here in Washington. We went there after a local radio show was talking about them since they are huge on the East Coast. I was a bit surprised that I wasn't overwhelmed by the burger but it has grown on me. If we had In-N-Out we would be there all the time as we love In-N-Out. We eat Five Guys once and a while. The other great thing about Five Guys is that you can order it anyway you want - all kinds of veggies, bacon, cheese, etc. I usually get it with jalepeno's in addition to the normal stuff.
Regarding the chilis at In-N-Out I never knew they had them. I have eaten these little demon hotties with Tommy's burgers for probably 25 years. I usually have a jar of them at the house and eat them with my sandwich (thanks to my dad pickled peppers are a staple in my household but I am the only one in the house who eats them). Next time I am at In-N-Out I am getting the chopped peppers on my burger!
