I always cut an X into the bottom before putting them in the pot. Helps them cook a little faster.

He's probably dead because they didn't realize until at least the 4th or 5th guy that you have to take the furry **** out... the choke.
I bet the guy who first ate one of those was named Artie, and yeah, he's probably dead. You can guess why.
Not really an answer, but found this interesting general link:

Which, in turn, links to this about artichokes:

I am bringing this thread back since it is a couple years removed and it is artichoke time again. anyone have any new good ways to cook them?
I have always steamed them until almost done (sometime stuffed and sometimes not) dumped either balsamic vinigrette or butter and garlic on it, and then put them in the fridge for a coulple hours to cool them down, cut them in half and toss them on the grill. turns out great.
Artichokes are a very goal oriented food.
As for Artie:

Do not eat the hearts, they are the worst part. Send them to me and I will properly dispose of them.
Has anybody ever tried artichokes with bacon? I think I will try that one next.
I usually sprinkle lemon pepper in them and then steam them. I will then dip them in buttery goodness.
I tried to BBQ them before but I failed. I did not steam them long enough.
