On the way home from a doc's appointment last night, my landlord wanted to stop for dinner and had a taste for BBQ. He knew this place was on the way home, on Sepulveda near the 118.

The place has been there for decades. According to their website, it looks like they opened in the late 40's. The decor and paintings on the wall certainly are from a time gone by. The floor is covered in wood shavings. I thought it has a great ambiance to it! It feels like some place you'd find out in the boonies.

We ordered the chicken and ribs combo. It came with choice of cole slaw, soup or salad as well as BBQ baked beans, fried fingerling style potatoes and garlic bread. The cost was $16 and change which didn't seem too bad. When the food got to the table, we were amazed at how much there was.

The ribs were huge and tasty, with the meat practically falling off the bone. Two different types of BBQ sauce were served on the side. We chose dark meat chicken and got a leg and back. Also very juicy and tasty with the meat easily pulling from the bone.

I don't know if any of you valley peeps have ever been there. But if you like good BBQ, I'd certainly recommend it. I've been to Hoggly Woggly's Tyler Texas BBQ just 3 miles down the road and I'll take Bear Pit over it ANY time!!

Bear Pit is a favorite of mine. Hogley Woggleys has really gone down in quality over the years. If you ever find yourself out in Simi hit up Famous Daves.

Oh yeah! I live in Simi and go to Dave's at least a couple times a month (probably lunch today!) and enjoy their food and kitschy decor. I love the mustard they give you with the hot links!

The biggest thing I liked about Bear Pit over Dave's was that it didn't have the "commercial chain" feel about it. It had a down home, family owned, out in the backwoods feel. Other than that, they've both got great BBQ!

There is a place called Furious Q's within walking distance from me, but I'm a bit aprehensive to try it. Its literally a smoker outside of a small cinder-block dive bar called the "Covina Inn". I don't want to go and be disappointed, but I really want some good bbq ribs.

Not much in the way of reviews available through Google aside from what appears to be a 2005 article written for the Walnut Weekly News... Furious Q's BBQ

Even Yelp only had one review that was inside a review of the Grand Inn...

They have BBQ here. Chef Steve of FuriousQ BBQ (http://www.furiousq.com/) smokes it up tasty and juicy. And I really love his coleslaw. Really one of the best coleslaws I have had. He makes it himself. Fresh and not too sweet. He has a chicken snack and rib snack that has two peices of meaty goodness and one choice of side for $6. A great dinner. His sweet potato pie is delish! Also has links, tri tip, pulled pork, french dip, etc.

Between the article and the review, I'd probably be willing to risk the $7 or so for the rib snack to try it out before going whole hog (pun intended) and investing $15-$20 for a combo dinner. Unless they totally butcher the ribs and have you eating what tastes like wood, I can't imagine they could be that bad. Otherwise they wouldn't still be in business. Give 'em a shot and let us know how it is!

The Bear Pit is great. I grew up in Valencia and we would frequent that place. I since moved to The OC and the BBQ up here is ok. I love the PBR signs that they have in the restaurant.

Make the drive up to my buddy's restaurant in Castaic. They've been getting good reviews lately.

A couple friends of mine work up at the pistol range at Pitchess Detention Center, right up the street from there. I'm thinking a lunch visit is in order for next week!
