On less than 10lbs of lump it ran at 220 for 15hrs, ramped it up to 270 for another few hours to finish off some burnt ends and cook some boneless skin less chicken breast. I knew of the Egg's ability to hold temp (although the 15hrs was longer than I expected) but what really blew me away was the moisture that those breast retained. Seriously some of the juiciest chicken I've ever had.

The only negative thing I have heard was they can crack, so be very careful when moving your BGE. As for size I've heard of people cooking 4 butts on a large using, but if you have the room and extra money I would go for the XL.Quote:
When I start prepping for pizza, i fire the egg up first and I let the temps run away for a bit at first to get the stone REALLY hot. The egg goes 600-700 and then I damper down to about 550. i tell its tone by tossing a bit of cornmeal on it it starts to toast right away, and i brush it off. when ready with the pizza(on a peel), I cover the stone with some cornmeal and slide the pie onto the stone. At 550-600 pies are done in about 8-10 minutes.

I've heard Bobby Flay rave about them, and he's a guy who'd know about those things. Plus you see them alot on the BBQ circuit. But they aren't for everyone.
my co-worker is a huge egghead. had three of those things, large and small, til he gave one away to his dad.

Went and checked 'em out at Barbeques Galore today. Big bucks, Maynard.
The damned thing is the American Girl Doll of the barbecue world. It's quality is EXCELLENT, but your initial expense can't possibly be limited to the smoker itself. The Large Egg is $800. Then they really get you with all that accessories you,ll need...like a stand (you can't just put it on the ground, man!)$195, cast iron cooking grates (comes with ceramic-covered wire grates that, while adequate, are cheap **** for the amount you're spending for the thing) $95, a couple of shelves to hang on it at $45 each, a cover at $40' the indirect-heat platesetter (rrequired if you want to go low and slow with it) $99' and the extended cooking rack so you can smoke ribs for $35. Out the door, you're looking at $1200-$1400.
The XL is $300 more to start, but I can say I don't think I'd need one that big. Though the extra internal space would be nice to smoke more ribs at one, vertically. Meh...
It's not something that's going to wear out, though. Aside from having to replace the felt seal once a year (plan on it due to wear and weather), there isn't much you'll have to do besides shovel out the ash...and there is significantly less of that because the thing burns super efficiently due to the amount of control you've got over the air intakes and exhaust. It's got a lifetime warranty, too...so this thing is really a long-term backyard cooking solution. It may be even something to build a real outdoor kitchen around.
Still...too rich for my blood right now, by far. Maybe when I upgrade to Captain...

1) I have a pizza stone for the oven in the house. No wood fire flavor, but its $17 dollars at Surl la Table.
2) Got the Mangrate the other day for the gas bbq grill outside. The thing works great. Perfect daimond sear marks on the steaks. I used it with the cherry wood smoker box and it was awesome.
Total investment
BBQ- $150
Pizza stone- $17
Mangrate- $30
Smoker box- $5
The BGE just looks a bit too cumbersome(and expensive) for me. I'm cool with my little set up.
