My wife has a birthday coming up and as one of her gifts I want to give her a nice bottle of wine and/or champagne.
What your top pick, bang for the buck?
Criteria:
- I would like to stay around $50-75 for this bottle
- She likes rose champagnes and red wines, merlot's in particular

Dude Sorry I didnt post earlier but you could get a great bottle of Wine for 20-25 bucks. If you really want to spend the bucks go for the Silver Oak...should be 60-70 bucks. Once again though you can get a great bottle of Merlot for 25-30 bucks and she or you probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference...not insulting you either but IMO Ive had bottles in that range that were fantastic. Not sure where you live but any local wine store not named BEVMO can point you in the right direction.

For a rose champagne, my hands down FAVORITE is Egly-Ouriet. It is divine.
it is a 60/40 Pinot Noir - Chardonnay blend. I actually love everything from this domaine.

If you want to chose a red wine - Bordeaux comes to mind since you say your wife favor Merlot. Now, IMO, Chateau Pavie-Macquin provides great bang for your buck. The wine is traditional and smooth. ETA: It is primarly a Merlot/Cab Franc blend FYI.
