Black Vodka...?

I was researching cocktails for my upcoming Halloween party and they used this vodka in the drinks. Looks cool though. A friend sent me this link from TheDevil Stewart's website:

Edit: "The colour of the vodka is changed by adding catechu, a herb found in southern Asia and central and east Africa.. Rich in tannin, catechu has no effect on vodka's flavour. However, many say it makes the vodka a little smoother."


And I just found it for sale at Hi-Time which is down the street from me. $16/bottle. I'll report back.

Ive heard of Squid Ink Pasta but Squid Ink Vodka is a new one.

Black catechu is used to make Blavod black. It is an extract found in Uncaria Gambier trees of Asia.

It's hard to find, and my understanding is they no longer have a distributor in California. I was able to get a few of the airline size bottles at Liquorama in Upland. It really doesn't taste any different than regular vodka in a mixed drink.

i didn't click um the link, but if you're asking about Blavod... it's f***ing terrible and it ain't quite black.

if you're really interested, i'm sure i can convince my old roomies to give you the two martini-less bottle they still have after we were fooled into buying that s*** about 10 years ago.

I think it's cool. The website is right: floated with some mixer and rocks would look bitchen.


*edit* That bad, huh ges? For some reason it has me thinking black licorice, even though I doubt it's flavored thusly.
