I have to agree with Philly's Best. I recently went to Philadelphia for a wedding and tried both Gino's and Pats. I thought Philly's Best was very comparable to Gino's.

For my son's b-day party last week, we flew in a box of fresh rolls and pan of cheesesteak from our favorite place out east, and got a tray of hogies from Philly's Best. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. It was mostly symbolic so everyone could have a REAL cheesesteak (and I forced everyone to at least TRY it with ketchup), but it was the best 3-year old party that I personally have ever been to.
And I hate Gino's and Pat's. Especially Gino's. ****in' shoe leather sometimes. They are like the Universal Studios of cheesesteak shops. It's a tourist stop. The Char Pit on Concord Pike is the best out there.
I take this cheesesteak business serious.

many, many years ago, driving back to nyc from trenton, nj, i stopped at a little roadside shack in south jersey. it was IMPOSSIBLY good cheesesteak. unbelievable. like joy and comfort wrapped into a fantastic taste delight.
i don't remember the name of the place, and couldn't find it again if my life depended on it. but it was, by far, the best cheesesteak i have ever had.
i'd say the best sandwich ever, but i had a smoked turkey with avocado on squaw bread once that is the best sandwich i've ever tasted.

Funny thing about Gino's and Pat's, all the locals I talked to would ask me if I had been out there and which one I preferred, when I asked them which one they preferred they would mention a third place (i think it was called Mike's?) as their favorite.

Probably Steve's. I've never had one from there, but my peeps tell me they're really good and it seems to be the place everyone mentions as an antidote to the Geno's/Pat's nonsense.

In Philly I go to Ishkabibble's on South St. In Atlantic City it's all about the White House.

Wow...I ve been to Philly's Best a few times. I just didnt think it was the greatest. Been to South Street too. Oh well. I was hoping to hear of a non-chain place (in LA of course).
I ll be honest...I like the Buffalo Chicken at Great Steak Escape. They usually put a lot of chicken boobs and provolone cheese. The way I like it. There was another place down in San Diego by the Hotel Circle area that made the all time best chicken cheesesteak sandwich.
I m going back to Philly's Best this week and see what i have missed. Plus the one I go to shows some love to the men in blue!!

There is a place (used to be at least) on Highland on the East side right below where Franklin jogs to the south. I think it was called One Stop or something like that. It was in a mini strip mall and was part of a 24 hour donut shop, but the diner was open during normal hours. They had the best cheesesteak I've ever had. (Does anyone live in that area and know if it's still around?)
Aside from that, I do love the ones Giamella's serve up. Philly's Best have a bit too much of a mass pruduced attitude and flavor for my taste.
