    Default The Cooking Channel

In my "most annoying foodtv host" thread back in '07, I predicted a second food-based channel would be born (post is here) and it finally happened: Fine Living channel became "The Cooking Channel" on Monday. Haven't had a chance to tune in, but the promos look promising! No celebs, no flash, no filler. Straight-up cooking, and at first glance looks more internationally diverse. What the hell took so long? Here's the official website

    Anyone check it out yet?

I watched it a little. It seems to be cooking show after cooking show with no "competition" type shows. There are a few celebs, Giada for example. But there is a LOT of variety of the types of presentations, so somebody is likely to find a show they like no matter what the type food they like.

Drink Up and Foodography are two good shows that I've caught so far.

Got some good viewing tonight, and scrolled through the next few days. A cool and low-key, low-budg feel, with simple down to earth shows by new and fresh faces. A bit like CurrentTV---only better, cuz it's food.

AND..... sprinkled with some of the few replays I’m happy to see anytime:

    Molto Mario
    Melting Pot
    Ellie Kreiger
    Giada
Entertaining (the two Canadian wine-pairing chicks)
    Tyler Florence
Nigella Lawson (+ her heavenly roaring sweater Lions)
    Jamie Oliver
    Thirsty Traveler

And oldest and dearest to my heart:

    the original Iron Chef Japan
    Julia Child
    The Galloping Gourmet
    Enuf said.

Even with these names the feel remains very real and inspiring. Just like the early days of foodtv.

    So far so good!

Was hoping for that too. But with all this throwback programming, may not happen. At least not soon.

As much as I LOVE HD, it doesn't bother me here. Lotsa great shows. I'll happily take I.C. Japan, Julia Child and the Two Fat Ladies any way I can get 'em.
