Thread: Cultural Differences in Food Storage

I thought some of you folks would appreciate this...

My wife makes a wonderful Japanese Style Curry. After dining...she leaves it in the pan on the stove. Yeah-that right, the chicken curry doesn't get refrigerated simply stays on the stove. She reheats it to get it hot, which kills any bacteria, and then its as good as the moment first made.

Upon further questioning- this is standard for japanese style curry. They make a big batch and leave it on the stove until it the pot is empty. Anyone who wants to eat it-simply reheats and enjoys.

Now there have been some studies that show curry does contain some ingredients that are anti-carcinogenic but it still is weird when Im eating a bowl of curry that was made 3 days ago and has never been refrigerated.

Every year we make mince meat pie with venison and suet (kidney fat). We cook the filling and let it set out for 1 month (no refridgeration). I'm told the minimum is 3 weeks and the maximum is 1 YEAR. It used to creep me out and I still don't know why it's ok to eat. It's been done this way for 500 years, so it must be ok.

Note to self: don't eat at Hipchecks or Nakedarmy's house.

Im sure the cook at your local Denny's has served up far worse.

Cultural differences or not, I always make sure to refrigerate leftovers. I have gotten food poisoning, lol!

Of course, after hearing about Hip's wife curry, I might make an exception as long as they offer me some Japanese beer with the curry. That should kill any bacteria.

Ah yes...they refer to that as the "Sapporo-Wasabi" principle.

Any of us would only be so lucky to get a invite to dinner at the Hipchecks house.

I want to go to hip's house to drink beer and listen to teh beatles.
