I picked up a used copy the Better Homes and Gardens (1996 edition) cookbook today over at the local bookstore for $5.50, certainly beats paying $25 or so for the 2010 version. Was the go to cookbook for Mom complete with water and grease stains. I also want to pick up the 1975 version of Joy of Cooking as well, not really a book Mom used, but I have read its much better than the current and 1997 versions.

Currently it is Tom Colicchio's "Think Like A Chef".
All-time fave is Julia Child's "Mastering the Fine Art of French Cooking" suite.
If I wanna make something, I generally do an internet search for recipes, look at a few to get a consensus of the main ingredients and the process, and then I go make my own version.
60 minute gourmet by pierre franey. the chicken with grapes is outstanding.
"the best recipe" by cooks illustrated.
they tried stuff a variety of ways and published the most successful method for each recipe.
"cover & bake" is also a good one by them done in the same vein. I get my eggplant parm recipe from there.
there's a British one I use for Brit dishes, but I can't think of it off the top of my head right now.
my sister in law just gave me "je sais cuisiner" (I know how to cook) by mathiot. I have yet to take that for a spin. for my husband's family, that book is as worn out as my mom's old "the joy of cooking" so I'm sure I'll find stuff to make in there.
for things I'm not used to cooking (squash blossoms, how to make my own all spice blend, etc) I'll use the internets.
Better Homes and Gardens is a staple in my kitchen. I just like the fact it has been around so long.

As for internet, epicurious is great and a staple for when you want to make something fancy. I like allrecipes.com. Give it a try. You can add ingredients you have in the fridge, and hit go and it will come up with a list of recipes that you can make with what you have on hand. Also love the comments below on each recipe - people who change them for the better.
