I forgot to post this, but I tried out this new location in Orange.
The food is pretty much the same from the original location in SB, good ingrediants...the steak (or carne asada) still has that good flavor. Yes, they have refried beans and rice, but it's not too bad
The thing I didn't like is the atmosphere, trying too hard with the decor and customer service, seems Applebee's-ish. It's not the hole in the wall burrito joint that I knew in SB.

I am also a UCSB graduate, and the other chick geologist in my office is too, so we were both really excited to hear of a Freebirds near us. Last week after a meeting, she stopped by there and picked us up some food. I got a burrito and she got the nachos.
We both agreed that it was good, but not as good as we remembered the one in IV. Maybe it's better when you're drunk at 3 after a rugby party?
She also said the decor was a bit too "OC".
