Going to Japan to see the inlaws and thought I would bring the father in law a bottle of scotch or american whiskey....also have a gift card for TJs so thought Id kill two birds with one stone. Any recommendations on a $25-$35 bottle?

I've just seen normal not very aged scotches at TJ's. Nothing special that I can recall.
I usually go to BevMo for a better selection.
i've been told TJ's house label single malt and irish whiskey are surprisingly good. i'll never try them since i have my favorites and hi-times carries them for a good enough price that it's just not worth it to me to shop whiskey at TJ. adding to what fisch is saying i'd honestly probably go elsewhere and buy them a nicer bottle than anything TJ carries.
Thanks all! I'll look into it.
Here is what I settled on...had a nice bottle that was shaped conveniently for the flight and had some good reviews.

BevMo! - Elijah Craig 12 Year Old Bourbon
Sorry for the late reply. Japanese whiskeys tend to taste a lot like Scotch. The flavors are very woody and refined. For years my father brought me home expensive bottles from Japan and I went through them in days.
If it were me I'd bring them something from TJ's like the Macallan 10 or The Balvenie 12. Those are nice single malt scotch varieties, and something the recipient will likely be used to as far as flavor goes. But I also like your choice; it may be a bit of an adjustment for him, but hey, it's a gift from you so he'll only be gracious.
Have fun in Japan, Hip! ;)
Me and the father in law had the Bourbon last night....very good. Smooth and a finish like caramal....almost like an Irish Creme. Papasan was happy!
That's a nice, honorable thing to do, you two sharing the bottle that you gave him. To a normal person that doesn't mean more than a little male bonding. But to the tried and true Japanese (you can ask my Dad), this is a big deal. He must think highly of you. Glad you had a good time.
Good idea to get the bourbon.. An American whiskey.. now I gotta try that one. Still working through my Maker's Mark I got from Costco on sale.
