Should be Mangosteen as the mixer

3 fingers of Maker's Mark + 2 medium ice cubes = ahhhhhhh!
1) ya, always use quality liquor, as you would for cooking. the only instance where you wouldn't taste the difference is if you load up on the sugary mixers.
2) i find crushed ice is the best with tropical drinks (fitting obviously, since that's what you prefer). it doesn't make much of a difference with whiskey sodas though. i've had jack and cokes with crushed or cubed ice and it doesn't make a difference to me. if it's just lime and quality sugar you're using for a caipirinha, like i enjoy, crushed ice is super. too bad my fridge doesn't make crushed ice...

1 part tequila
2 parts orange juice
I call it... tequila and orange juice.
I sometimes mix it up a little, though, and add a splash of tequila.
Oh!
And if anyone knows of a drink I can make that tastes like turkey gravy, please post it here!
So far, the closest I can get is turkey gravy.
I prefer cubes with vodka or whiskey based drinks, but most tropicals, if made correctly, are typically more booze-heavy than most mixed drinks. The crushed ice acts as a congealing agent and waters the cocktail down in just the right ways.

Works like a charm. I've heard awful things about the crap they sell at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but I have nothing but positive things to say about this model.
