Albertson's... I started going there when I lived in Woodland Hills because it was closest along with Ralph's right across the street. But Albertson's always seemed to be slightly cheaper unless it was an ad item at Ralph's. Vons/Pavillion's always seemed to be higher than the others.

Albertson's is also the closest to work and built a nice higher end store in Calabasas.

Now that I'm on the east end of Simi, I drive past a Vons to shop Albertson's. Again, their prices on the things I use most seem to be cheaper unless it's on sale somewhere. I try to scan the ads when they come out on Tuesday. Also the Albertson's here seems to be VERY personable. Rather than a huge chain supermarket, it seems like the old local corner store atmosphere I remember in Chicago as a kid. For example, I know several of the employees by name. They recognize me and over the past 10 months have asked how my injury is coming along. They always ask if I need help out to the car and have even stopped while passing me in the aisle to ask if I'd like them to go get a basket during times when I've run in for just a couple things and found other items on sale and picked them up as well.

And lastly... 20% off frozen pizza on Friday! So when they've got DiGiorno (or other brands) on sale for a couple bucks off, then tack on the 20% and BINGO, you walk out of there with a bunch of food for not a lot of green.

The funny thing about Albertson's is that their sister company back in IL is Jewel/Osco which my mother tended to not shop at because they always seemed to be more expensive than their competitors in the neighborhood.

I have a Vons and a Ralph's around the corner from me. I used to shop either one. The Ralph's is 24 hrs. Then I started going to a Ralph's about 2 miles away. It was a much cleaner store. Now I go to Walmart Superstore about 12 miles away every 4 weeks or so and stock up. My money just seems to last much longer with Walmart. I go to Ralph's for in betweeners and fresh food.

there are Von's, Ralph's, Jon's, TJ's and Gelson's all within easy driving distance from my house. Von's is the closest and the easiest to get to of all places above.

my preference would have been TJ's but the parking lot is always crappy, you have to wait to find a spot. Ralph's and Gelson's, well, the traffic sucks major ass to get there, plus both places cater to the rich snobs who live in the area.

Jon's, the cheapest of them all meaning the messiest place around. nothing against the low income people who shop there, but damn, will the employees there ever keep the place in a good clean condition? doesn't matter if they're paid minimally.

anyway, I go to Von's for a general purpose. if I want quality meats, well, I'll go to Ralph's because their meat dept is better and well-staffed. other than that, fuhgettit.

ALbertsons, Vons, Ralphs, or Stater Bros. Why? Because if I was grocery shopping there, I'd live in California again.

Have a Winco about 2 blocks down the street, great prices on most things, about 30%-40% lower than what Albertsons charges. The "lowered prices" promo Albertsons is doing isn't being run in Boise, where the damn company started 70 years ago! Don't have a full meat counter, but otherwise, the selection is as good as most full service supermarkets. Plus the checkouts are fast and efficient, just have to bag your stuff.

Albertsons is now owned by Supervalu, based in Minneapolis, MN. They still are affiliated with Jewel/Osco.

Walmart is my second choice, but their prices aren't as good as Winco, and their checkouts are slooooooow.

I've only got 2 in my small town: Safeway (Vons) & Smiths. I shop exclusively at Safeway because Smiths meat dept is smelly and their produce never seems very fresh.

When I lived in Orange County, I mostly shopped at Vons (online and had it delivered usually).

It doesn't matter if you have 1 item or 150, checkout at Walmart is always slow. If I try the self checkout, I always seem to end up behind someone trying to buy like a pre-paid phone card or cold medicine that locks the system up until a checker comes over to help them. If you know you're going to need a checker's assistance, don't use the self checkout.

That, and Walmart is on my aunt and uncle's list right now because someone passed 2 checks on their account for almost $1000. Because Walmart uses those scanners where they just run the check through and give the customer the check back, the bank is having trouble trying to track down the bad checks someone wrote on their account. There's no physical copy of the check. Oh and Walmart couldn't tell the bank which Walmart location the checks were written at. The bank put the $ back in their account, but they had to close the account, get temp checks, new debit cards, etc. My aunt thinks the best thing is that the person at her bank told them this is the 3rd time in a month someone who banks at their branch has had the same thing happen at Walmart in the past month. That leads them to believe either someone at their bank branch is running a scam, someone at Walmart is running a scam and it just happens to be using their bank branch, or a bank employee and a Walmart employee are working together.
