I had a major problem with Thompson and I will never go back. It took countless calls, and letters to get them to redeem the credit I had earned through their club. Most of my on-line ordering is through JR Cigars or through Freyboys. I get much better prices through both places, and the cigars arrive faster too. JR has some great weekly specials. In fact they are so great, I am often finding myself wanting to buy more cigars even though my humidor is full. Thompson is ok to start, but I think in time you will outgrow their selection. They also aren't very helpful when you do have a problem. You will also never get free of their mailing list.
If you have the time and patience to read through all the lots, cigarbid.com is the place to score some nice deals. I usually just search for my favorites. I'll second JRs and toss in a vote for Mike's Cigars in Florida.
Doug's right about JR's. I used them a bit and they are very good as well.
Regarding getting off of Thompson's mailing list Doug is also right. I had to move to Washington to get off of it!
I've never done business with Thompson's before, but I can tell you that I've heard many horror stories about them and their practices. I've also heard that their samplers are terrible. Having heard all this, it kinda irks me that apparently they have a link here on LGK. But anyway.
I use JR. Cigar Bid and Cigar International are one in the same as far as I know. There's also Holts (holts.com), The Tinder Box (tinderbox.com), and Famous Smoke Shop (famous-smoke.com), and they've all come recommended.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have purchased from Cigars Int'l before. Fine experience, no complaints. Have not purchased from Thompsons, but still may yet. I didn't see anyone mention Cigars.com...unless it's in the first 7-odd pages & I missed it. Any thoughts there?
I've also bought from local shops. I like that because I get to touch & feel. Yeah, you pay more, but it's nice to put eyeballs onto what you're spending money on.
Just to add 2 cents on a Monday afternoon, I smoked a Rocky Patel Signature Toro in my hot tub over the weekend. I really enjoyed it. Good flavor, really mellowed out about 1/2 way through. Not too strong or harsh, good smoke, good burn. And I found it went OK with a Sam Adams Summer Ale, but it really excelled, I think, with a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.
But in my mind, when it comes to cigars and liquor, a good smoke and a scotch is almost unbeatable. A red wine is good too, but the scotch is where the money is. But that's me.
For me, I go to the local smoke shop for single sticks and harder to find cigars. But for boxes, I'll buy online. I agree, it is nice to go into a shop, and lets face it, to make sure that cigar store stays there we all have to spend some money there.
Since I don't have the tastebuds for scotch, a cigar and a nice cup of coffee is a perfect match. Doesn't get any better than that.
Hey Eyesk8r,
I want to thank you for meeting up with me last Friday! The box of Fuente's (Chateau Sungrown robustos) is 1/2 gone and are excellent! With what I brought with me, we went through about 20 smokes between 6-7 of us that chose to partake. Everyone was good to go!
Hey guys, next time in Vegas, make sure you connect with Eyesk8r. I know I will!
Thanks man, I do appreciate it!!!
Hey i thought i revive this great thread...I *quite* smoking cigarettes beginning of february and lately i started smoking cigars again as i did few years back. It's not something new to me, I used to smoke cigars but it just didnt taste as good while smoking cigarettes. Lately I find myself hooked on Kristoff Corojo, bad enough to smoke one everyday especially when driving a truck at nights after a nice meal.
I would like to know what you guys smoke your cigars with, as in drinks. I for some reason cant drink anything else but Diet Pepsi with the cigar. I dont know what it is but the taste of the soda goes great with the cigars..
