I Need Cookie Help!!!
My best friend's baby shower is next Sunday, and I will be making either sugar or shortbread cookies and icing them. Her nursery theme is "Busy Bee", so I need to make some kind of cookie that can be rolled out and cut with a cookie cutter (in the shape of a bee).
Do any of you have kickass cookie recipes, for cookie-cutter cookies that can be iced?
And also, is there an icing recipe out there that will harden for decorative purposes and not turn soft?
Thanks

If you have cooling grates, this is a good one for covering the entire cookie

then, you can use colored royal icing for piping the designs and details.

I know youre crafty, but I have a million tips and icing colors that are sitting and waiting for me to do something with. Before you buy anything, hit me up to see if I have it first.

Creative time-saving
Yellow food coloring in the cookie batter+black frosting for bee stripes=more time to sleep in before the shower on Sunday. Just a thought.
Cold dough is easier to roll out for me, so if it were my project I'd make the dough Fri. night and fridge overnight in fist-sized balls (one fist=one sheet o' cookies) .
edit* fyi: that smiley came up all by itself... wtf?

When you type the word "idea" with a colon after it, it automatically inserts the smiley.
Thanks for the suggestions, you guys. I was hoping for an alternative to Royal Icing, though. I'm familiar with it, because it's the same stuff I use as mortar to hold together gingerbread houses. It's hard and crunchy, and not the best-tasting. But, I guess if I have to use it for the result I'm looking for, then I will.
Ruely: I already have every bottle of food coloring imaginable. But thanks for the offer! Wanna get together and bake cookies?

you could use a buttercream, but leave them out overnight/several hours so the buttercream gets a nice crust....
or you could try the color flow icing...

Well, as it turns out, the baby shower is kind of on hold at the moment, because the mother-to-be is in the hospital. We don't know if she's going to have to have an emergency cesarean or what.
But, if I do make the cookies, it will have to be Friday afternoon or Saturday sometime.
