If they aren't high brow, and love 141 beers on tap, (and hot college girls) send them to Goat Hill Tavern on Newport/Harbor. This is a good place to send Angels fans looking for a bar to watch the game at too.
230 Forrest Ave. for a nice upscale dinner. The seating is rather small and tight, but the food is amazing.
I heard they were going to do that, but didn't know when. Also heard they were going to change Rouge at FI to another French 75, or maybe they did already. I know Savannah was the one of the Culinary Adventures group that wasn't making money so they moved it. Chimayo at the Beach at the Huntington Pier has some tasty stuff, but I haven't been there in a long time. My old boss's husband owns all those joints. I've never been to Sorrento in Laguna. The French 75 down there is really cute, pricey, but cozy and good food. And the chocolate soufflé is just bonkers. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
OH **** NO!!! that place smells like piss and vomit baked in a 300 degree oven!!! And there are OC flat-billers and Britney wannabes crawling all over the place. Not even the 141 taps and 5-minute-free-beer-dash-for-chicks makes that place worth it.
Maybe if I had a gas mask to filter out the stench though...cuz it IS cheap.
chimayo is no more. i think it's a savannah's also now.
oh ya & in regards to goat hill, i always end up going there when there aren't a lot of people around... like during the day on a weekend. and i sit out in the open air area where the pool tables are.
i haven't been around at nighttime since college... like 8-9 yrs ago.

That's exactly how I remember it except with Marines starting fights and a bunch of nasty river rat looking chicks. But it has been at least 10 years since I made a trip there, so who knows what it's like now. I went back to the Harp a while back and it seemed like the Marines from Goat Hill had moved down the street, which was kinda depressing.
If you want a good place for a nice intimate dinner with a helluva wine selection, give Old Vine Cafe a try. It's in the Camp across from the Lab on Bristol. Tiny place, eclectic wines, and a menu that changes all the time. Here's their beer and wine list:
