    Default JackFruit

I had always seen this at the asian markets and the juice being served at vietnamese juice stands but never had a chance to try it until last night. Its a very unusual fruit in that it has an unsual texture(semi slippery-almost like squid or albalone) and an usual taste(think floral essence mango with bubble gum). It is a labor heavy fruit-one must cut it into quarters, then dig out the pods, the seed the pods before eating the edible portion. If anyone here has had any experience with a Durian-this is kind of Durian Lite.

Some at the BBQ were repulsed but I found it very good, I would certainly love to try it again and maybe squeeze some lime on it. Anyone else have any jack fruit experience and creative ways to serve it?

    Here are some pics...

The Whole Jack and nothing but the Jack....

Half the Jackfruit it used to be....

    The finished product...

If you havent tried this by all means do....it literally tastes like bubble gum.

I loves me some jackfruit. I'm part Indonesian, so it's no stranger to me. However, every way I've had it has been in some sort of Indonesian drink or shave ice thing. So yummy.

it's my dad's favorite but he hasn't bought it here because something about the shipping process changes the flavor from how it is when you get it right from the tree and that experience isn't worth the price they charge per lb. he's only had it canned since that's cheap or he eats it right out of the rind when we're in Vietnam.

my parents also like durian. that's my mom's favorite. DISGUSTING. I can't get by the smell. she says it smells like hell but tastes like heaven. I guess my olfactory nerves are too strong.

my favorite is lychee/longan. fresh from the tree like you can get easily in Taiwan is best. a lot of the time, the ones you buy here leave an itch in the back of my throat.

haha, deservedly so. yet no fine. she opened one of those up in her hotel room and made the whole floor stink. you could smell it down the hallway. I felt bad for the non-viet tourists.

I opened this thread and thought Jackfruit = Durian, I guess theres not the same. I don't know how people can eat durian, a co-worker brought some to a bbq once and it smelled so bad, akjsdlkfjlsdkjf. I think they're trying to be hipsters or something and they eat it to be different when they actually hate themselves for eating that stuff.

haha wow, that's extreme! if that's the case, they should hate themselves. I'd rather touch my baby's poo than eat durian or be anywhere in its vicinity.

I had a jackfruit "pulled pork" sandwich at Pure Luck, a vegan restaurant up on Heliotrope just off of the 101. I guess pretty much all of their fake "meats" are just jackfruit, which is pretty cool since they don't use any soy or wheat protein. It was pretty good, didn't have that much flavor and the barbecue sauce just kind of took over.
