One beer I had recently in Prague CZ was Staropramen. OMFG was this beer smooth and yummy. It was a pils but it didn't just taste like cereal malt, though it did have a mild malted flavor. The hops were subtle and just enough to give a slight hint to the malt.
The beer went down magnificently, and at 25 Czech Koruna ($1.20) for a .5L glass of beer, it was a steal! It went wonderfully with the bread, mustard and sausages. If it had been one of these IPAs on acid, the beer would have overpowered the food. Just like consuming almost any red wine with lobster. It would just kill the taste.
So is the purpose of the beer to consume it by itself as a meal of sorts, or is it to be consumed with food to bring out the food's flavors?
I either case I think I'd go with more malt-like flavored beers than a hop attack with yellow/amber/brown colored water.
