I ate a 7x7 when I was a junior in college. The walk home was brutal.
They are a local company with many many friends in the area their public court battles within the family have been in the local papers often.
BTW some of the meat they used came from that processing plant in Chino with all the downed cows and forklifts lifting them up so they can slaughter them. They clearly didn't own that one.
The original owners wanted to keep it local so they had control and a great quality product, the money was not the focus, they also did a ton of chairty work and were big donors. the new CEO/Owner is the daughter, she's all about the money and has already started cuting back a bit to save money.
In N Out opened a store on Topanga near me. Before that, the closest one was on Ventura and the lines were so long I went there once... exactly once... 8 years ago.
Now that they have a store near me, I was all excited. I've been there several times now, and probably won't be going back any time soon.
Why? All three times I've been there, the meat was way way too rare.
Plus the lettuce was wilty and onions were half cooked.
It just didn't taste like In n Out. Not even the Strawberry shake was that good.
So in a way, I think they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they stay small, they piss people off with their horrendous lines. If they expand, they piss people off with horrendous quality.
It's a lose lose. Personally, I love Tommies significantly less than In n Out, but I go there significantly more because I know I can get in and out of there in a reasonable time. If I want to wait 20 minutes for a burger, I'll go sit down some place with alcohol.
