    Default Nigori (unfiltered Sake)

As I write this, I am drinking Sho Chiku Bai Nigori (an inexpensive, but tasty, brand of unfiltered Sake).

I've had it before (at a sushi restaurant somewhere), and rather liked it.

But now I'm having it again and..

    I'm Lovin' It.

It is sweet, but not overly so, IMO, and has a slightly musty/flowery kind of aroma.

Looks like lowfat milk (you have to shake the bottle before serving).

    What I'm drinking:

I Iimagine it would go well with any exotic or spicy food, as well as
being great by itself. It should be served chilled, at least to some degree.

    It's great with sushi, ofcourse...

But it's pretty dang good w/o Sushi/Sashimi too.

I'm sure there are brands of Nigori that get really expensive.

Anybody ever had one of those?

In any case, I highly recommend (any brand of) Nigori for a deliciously-inebriating change-of-pace.

This is my favorite kind of sake, actually. And Sho Chiku Bai is the go-to. The flowery sweetness is much more pleasing to my palate than filtered sake. Everyone I've introduced this to LOVES it...except the most important person: my wife.

She likes hot sake, which I'm not big on (since only old or low-quality sake is served this way, traditionally). The heat really masks the flavors. If she wants hot sake, I'll typically have a Kirin.

At only 15% ABV, it's not exactly BANZAI!!!!! But it's a very good accompaniment to a Japanese meal, IMO.

My Significant Other is the same way--prefers the hot, filtered Sake.

But the Sho Chiku Bai is only about $11 per/1.5Liter bottle at
    my local Asian grocery.

(A much better value than the smaller sizes).
I guess there'll just have to be more for me.

With it's sugar content, it's not something I care to drink often enough to warrant a 1.5L bottle sitting in my fridge taking up space. Usually just buy a bottle at the restaurant.

I really like nigori but have never tried the Sho Chikubai. Wow, that's a crazy price for a 1.5L bottle of something actually drinkable. Like FBJ My Japanese wife also does not go for Nigori--or chilled sake in general. I'll get a special bottle for myself (720ml) occasionally or order when dining out. I do remember though a brief but passionate love affair with the nigori made in good ol' 'merica by Momokawa. It tasted like banana cream and had a wonderful acidity that cut through the richness and oiliness of sushi and sashimi. It was also reasonably priced, and if you can find it you may want to give it a shot triplcrown.

Frozen Sake is pretty good, would get them at Izakaya Nonbei in Hawaii. Pour the precisely chilled sake into the cup and it turns to slush. Like those videos of soda being poured out but turning to slush, same thing.

Nombei definitely did it right. For nigori the colder the better.

A Quick Tip....Gyu Kaku has a Saki Sampler that is well worth the price of admission. For the record...I like the unfiltered.
