    Default 'shine

so, I got my hands on a jar of moonshine from a well respected friend. not gonna tell you where it's made but I can tell ya it isn't from the commonly known moonshine-makin' areas of The South.

anyway, back on the subject, I sampled it with a shot glass and, OOF, it tastes like tequila. I've had moonshines before, real ones from The South and ones from a local liquor store here, but they never tasted like this. oof.

this one must have gone bad, no?
I BELIEVE I'll have another beer!

"Moonshine" is technically illicitly distilled from whatever the heck they had handy, grain-wise. Could be barley, rye, corn, sawdust...anything that could be fermented. Automotive radiators are used as condensers quite frequently, and no...not new ones. So if you got a jar of that, watch out for lead and methanol. Pour some in a big spoon and light it on fire, then let us know what color it burns!

As for the grain alcohol that is legally produced these days, the term "moonshine" is most commonly (from what I've seen) given to un-aged corn whiskey. Unflavored, it's clear. I've seen anywhere between 90 and 120 proof. When fruit flavoring is added, it drops the alcohol content significantly (but it sure does make for good sippin'). The stuff I've had has been triple-distilled and filtered, so it makes for a very smooth pull. I drink the plain stuff, usually, with a citrus twist and occasionally a bit of gassy water.

My favorite "moonshine" is from a place in Greenville, SC called Dark Corner Distillery. Their shop is right across the street from the overnight hotel, there. I need to get back, as I'm almost out and they don't ship to CA. Their straight moonshine is good, but for something REALLY inventive, check out their Hot Mama whiskey!! 111 proof, and infused with cinnamon and chipotle peppers. DAMN GOOD.

Aside from theirs, there's a bartlett pear-flavored whiskey that I had somewhere. I can't remember the name of it, but DAMN was it good!!! Tasted just like a pear off the tree!

If you couldn't ignite it, it ain't very high in alcohol. Probably way thinned out by the blackberry flavoring.

I tried some 'shine from a doomsday preper who lives in the middle of nowhere a couple thousand miles north of here. The stuff had an almost honey like flavor to it, but burned like a SOB going down. One shot of this stuff and your head wasn't right. The guys said he degreases his guns with it so it's got a dual purpose. I guess you need that kind of stuff with the armory(sp?) he put together.

Nah. What he makes it from doesn't matter much with the harshness (unless of course he's making it from fermenting oriented-strand-board and pink fiberglass insulation with a base of cat piss). The harshness comes from only a single trip through the still and zero filtering.

That moonshine distillery I visited in SC explained the whole process to me. Theirs is triple-distilled and triple-filtered for a very pure product that is extremely smooth and tasty going down.
