Default Sportsmen's Lodge to close down?

earlier today I heard that the renowned celeb hangout of the heydays was closing its doors on Dec 31, according to its operator who claims to own the place.

however, the other owner said he will keep it open.

    btw...

"I know he's trying to bring in a steakhouse," said Steve Afriat, a lobbyist hired by Weintraub for the project. "Steakhouses are popular, and there's no high-end steakhouses in the East Valley."

He does have a point there. There really isn't a house that specializes in steaks over by me (Sherman Oaks). Lots of great sushi like Nozawa and Bizen, comfort food like Mel's Drive In, deli's like Frommer's and Jerry's, good chili at Chili My Soul, and of course plenty of ethnic cuisine like Anajak Thai and Indian. But for a real steak? Not so much. I usually head up to JJ's Steakhouse in Pasadena when I have a hankerin for that (or just rock my own cause I OWN the grill! ) so I guess it would fill a niche down here.

Fair enough. I've seen the place countless times but I've yet to go in there. I'll make it happen in the near future. I guess for me since I have Dr. Hogly Wogly's nearby I usually direct my outside bbq needs there (their brisket and ribs are to kill for), but they're not a steakhouse by any means and it looks like the Smoke House has plenty of that.

It just popped into my head- if I go out for meat and beers, I really like the Red Lion. Not steaks, of course. But a big sausage platter with potatoes, sauerkraut and pickles, along with a few Dortmunders, probably has more appeal to me as a 'hearty' dining experience than just about anything else.
