I have to say Final Score in Newhall on Lyons. The owner, Joe, is a great Italian guy from New York. It is one of the very few places that actually cook their own meats. Everyday he roasts his beef and turkeys and bakes his own hams. He never buys pre-cooked or processed meats. He will also sell you any meat by the the pound at $10/lb. And his Philly CheeseSteak is made with real cheese and he uses chopped fillet mignon instead of sliced roast beef. mmmmmm.
It's a sports bar too with plenty of flatscreens.
Just to get it out of the way, I don't like veggies on my sandwiches and I'm not a big sandwich eater, I rather get a burger.
-My favorite non-deli Pastrami in LA was at Astro Burger on Santa Monica Blvd, near The Lot Studio.
-I liked to go to Canter's and Factor's for a Corned Beef or Pastrami on Challah (egg bread).
Too bad in San Diego, there seems to be a dearth of shops that serve a "good" pastrami sandwich unlike in LA where it seems everyone offered one.
-I usually go to DZ Akin's to get my salted cured meat sandwich fix. I haven't explored enough probably.
-My favorite sub place was Capriotti's in Hillcrest but they closed down, ****ty location in a small lot. I miss it. :(
Every time I see a travel food show that showcases Primanti's or the Carnegie Deli I want to get a plane ticket.
Yeah, it kinda sucks that the best pastrami sandwich to be gotten in San Diego is a freakin' Subway (select locations only).
So I just make it at home. While Costco no longer has the Carnegie Deli stuff, Ralphs has pretty good thinly shaved pastrami. Put that on some grilled marble rye, and enjoy.
Sounds like good ol SD needs to catch up with civilization and look into luring some of the heavy hitters into town. I am surprised SD does not have http://www.thehat.com/loca.htm yet. Come on up Zak and you and I will go grab a pastrami bomb, my treat. Damn, it's 8:50 in the morning and I am already hungry for a sandwich.![]()
When I was still in CA, had 2 favorites:
Jersey Mikes = #13 Mike's Style
Italian Greek Deli, Santa Barbara - Torpedo
I would have one of those at least once a week.
In CO, my new favorite, Jimmy John's #9 - #9 ITALIAN NIGHT CLUB®
Real genoa salami, Italian capicola, smoked ham, and provolone cheese all topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and our homemade Italian vinaigrette. (You hav’ta order hot peppers, just ask!)
And I still love the Hot Pastrami at Staples.
I don't eat subway if I can help it mainly due to their bread being meh.
The problem with many non-deli places down here that serve Pastrami or Corned beef is they don't use a steam box to warm the meat. I won't eat at a place that uses a griddle to warm it because it dries it out too much as the fat in the marbling breaks down.
Microwaving is even worse.
Concur on Bay Cities in Santa Monica.
I read where some food critic called the tuna sandwich at the Apple Pan as one of the best sandwiches he has ever had, and I have to agree it is very good, as is the egg salad sandwich. I usually go for a burger there but those two sandwiches make for a nice change, and they will do them "protien style" and wrap them in lettuce if you are looking to cut carbs.
