For bars I prefer mellow dives, nothing too fancy or too crazy if I'm just going to drink.
In San Diego I occasionally go to...
    The Waterfront
Aero Club (great whiskey choices, maybe best in the city?)

I do most of my drinking at restaurants though.

    ahh the memories!

I think I still have their shirt with this logo

There was about a five year period in my life where I was at Mr. Lucky's on a daily basis....

    I love(d) that place!

The Gasser Lounge in Redondo Beach. Awesome dive bar, tables and stool stands made of old wheels, shrines to Johnny Cash, and an AWESOME Kings bar! Bartenders wear shirts that say "If the puck is in play, DON'T f***ing bother me!". Plus you get a shot every time the Kings score. I was there the night they scored 6 vs Colorado :D

Finally got to go to the Goathill earlier this year...meh. Beer selection is good but not worth the environment.

When I'm looking to get my pretensiousness on, I go to The Varnish and the newly minted rooftop bar at the Ace Hotel. I'm a fan of "union on Yale" in Claremont, one of the better old fashioneds you'll ever have is served there

The place really isn't a bar per se, but the Level II Bar at Whole Foods in Pasadena is a pretty cool little place. They always have 5 or 6 really good beers on tap and a few darn good wines by the glass as well. The really cool thing is that you can pick out any beer or wine from the store and drink it there with no "bar" markup. They sometimes have Pliny Elder & Younger there as well as a few Golden Road brews. My wife and I go there and have a few glasses of wine with some cheese and then go grocery shopping right after. Another bonus is that you can pick out any food there and have it cooked for the cost of the meat.
Another bonus... they've been known to show a Kings game or two there.

    I'm a fan!

Or take the Metro to and from the game. I do it every time. Also, I'm a public transit nerd. I love riding on trains and subways.
    weird isn't it
