Thread: What's your favorite bar? Why?

Back when I lived in Altadena, the place where I could get my mail was called the Hideaway up in Little Tujunga Canyon on Kagel Rd.

Good drinks, ok selection of beers, and on the weekends they'd have the BBQ going. I loved the place because it was the last road house in the San Gabriel Mts. that hadn't been taken over by dick heads on there rice rockets. or the dick weeds on their road hogging ten speeds on the week ends.

I guess the thing I liked best, I could leave where I stabled my horses in Shadow Hills, ride up Little T canyon, get fed and hammered, ride back down to Shadow Hills, (the horses knew the way), and no DUI would be involved.

I want to ride a horse while hammered.

I talked with a police officer about the definition of a "vehicle" for a DUI. Of course, I'm an a-hole and ask if things like non-motorized scooters, bikes and skateboards can be considered vehicles. To which he said "yes", and that he'd given out at least one DUI for each of one of them. He basically said that anyone can get a DUI for anything with wheels if they're over 0.08. So I give him a hard time and ask about Healys, and if they're considerd a vehicle. Then I asked about disabled people in wheelchairs and people in the hover-round things. Then he asked me if I'd been drinking, and which car was mine in the parking lot.

What I'm getting at is that he never said anything about horses. X, you're a ****ing genius! I guess we all need horses now.

My bar days are mostly over, but my favorite bar was where I could pick up the most strange. Glory Days!

The Rusty Scupper, Clancys, Rusty Pelican, The Dugout in Pasadena, One West in Pasadena. Hillary's Hole in the wall, SunSluts, I mean Sunsets and the rest in MB.

Well, to be fair, I think if Slo Mo et al would respond they'd tell you that you could get a drunk in public, but I don't think you could get a DUI. I was always on a trail in the canyon bottom, cross under the 210 frwy at the east end of the Hansen dam area, I'd have to cross Wentworth, so for all but about 50 ft, I was on no roads for a copper to see how hammered I was.

pretty sure it depends on where you are as to the likelihood of getting cited while drunk (in public or while riding something... hey-oh!).
but i had a friend who got a DUI in a car. then a DUI on a bike.
i'm sure if you were drunk riding your bike or horse or whatever in the canyons, no one would care since you're not likely to hurt anyone there. there's a bunch of liability and increased likelihood someone's gonna get hurt if you're drunk bicycling in the city.

Very, very small. Not a huge beer selection but everything is great. A few beer, cider or wine cocktails as they don't have a full liquor license. Their Trippel burger is insane. Its a mix of aged angus, pork and duck confit. Comes w/ an apricot jam and some greens. I ask for it w/ the pretzel bun though. If you're familiar w/ The Hudson House in Redondo Beach, its the same owner, Brooke. She is actually on Top Chef Seattle right now.

You must definitely try Back Abbey. The beer selection alone is worth it. I've tried a few other menu items, which were all good, but I ALWAYS come back to the Back Abbey Burger.

The burger you described...I just drooled on my desk. I will DEFINITELY have to try to check those out. Brooke is kicking ass on TC and is one of the 2-3 chefs on the show that I am rooting for to win. She is creative as HELL.

According to the CA Vehicle Code:


CVC 670. A "vehicle" is a device by which any person or property may be propelled, moved, or drawn upon a highway, excepting a device moved exclusively by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks.


CVC 23152. (a) It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle. There is no stipulation that one must be driving on a road, highway etc.

So yes in the letter of the law you can be DUI on a horse. Whether or not you really upset the officer enough to take you jail for this, is a whole different story.
