Whiskey/Scotch experts, I need advice!

I have really begun to enjoy whiskey/scotch over the past year or two, but have never really ventured out beyond the Makers and Knob Creek in quality. I prefer the Knob Creek to the Makers Mark, if this means anything.

Anyways, I am going on a trip for the weekend to Big Bear to stay in a family cabin and would love to enjoy some whiskey or scotch next to the fireplace at night with some good friends.

I stopped by Costco to see what I could get and to venture out past my American tastebuds. Here are the 3 finalists I am interested in buying. What is the best one and/or what do you see as the best value?

Macallan 12 for $39
Johnny Walker Green for $34
Johnny Walker Gold for $50

always go with the single-malt.

that said, Albertson's is doing it and i'm sure they ain't the only market, but they're blowing out Glenlivet gifters for like $28 bucks.

get the macallan. blends (such as johnny walker) are god awful nasty. i've gotten so sick off them, i've sworn them off. i think the only one i'll try is johnny walker blue.

funny you started this thread. today, i picked up glenlivet 18 today as a gift for someone in the family.

edit: ges beat me to it! i was gonna say, while i like knob creek, i can't even think of how to really compare bourbon to scotch. to me, they're two totally separate entities.

I've gotten into Irish whiskey lately and can probably finish a bottle of Jamesons myself. Powers is also pretty tasty.

You might also consider Bushmill's. Very smooth, and you can get a liter bottle for 18.99 at Trader Joe's.

Jameson 1780 is a few dollars more than their basic bottle, but it's damn good.

Knappogue Irish Single Malt is also very, very good.

Irish whiskey, in my estimation, has more "bite" than Scotch, which tends to have a more peaty, earthy flavor. I'm no expert on Bourbon...

Don't know if this is getting to you too late or not, but go shopping at Wine & Liquor Depot in Van Nuys. Its on Saticoy just east of Balboa. You can also try Mission Liquor in the Glendale area. If you're in OC, go to Hi Times. These selections may be too much for a beginner (Wine & Liquor advertises they have over 300 Scotches), try out Bevmo which has some reasonable prices and a better selection.

If you enjoy Knob Creek and Makers, any single malt Speyside or Highland will do nicely. Macallan is a Speyside; very popular and as a result the prices reflect it. Some others to enjoy would be Highland Park, Glenmorangie, Dalmore or Glenlivet which should be very available and are more moderately priced. If you want something that is a bit more aromatic and fruit-forward, try a Lowland or Campbeltown like Springbank, Rosebank or Littlemill. If you want something very unique to Scotch, go for Islay (my preferred): Laphroig, Bowmore, Jura, Talisker, Caol Ila, or Ardbeg (if you're willing to shell out the bucks).
