As a Kings fan, I've always wondered exactly how the team prepares for a big game. Are they really concentrated on match-ups against the other team's lines or targetting certain opposing players because they have a short fuse and will take penalties? Does the coach scream "Shoot the puck!" or "Frolov, go to the net!" during the power play just like we do? How does the coach talk to players on a one-on-one basis? Well, a new show that is coming to Fox Sports West has this and a lot more.
The premier installment of "Kings Insider" (Friday, Feb 17th at 10 PM on FSN) gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the Los Angeles Kings and the preparation that take place in the locker on the day of the big game, and even the action on the bench during the heat of the battle. The show follows a day in the life of Kings' head coach Andy Murray, from breakfast in his extended stay hotel at 6 AM, to the morning skate at Toyota Training Center and ultimately to the Staples Center on November 17th to face the Vancouver Canucks. The program gives fans an informative look at the process of picking the right players and defining match-ups on the chalkboard and getting the boys ready for the game against what Murray calls "the best team we've played this year".
From Toyota Training Center, You get a good look at how the coach interacts one-on-one when he has a talk with Mike Weaver about his ability to give tough 60-minute effort and a chat with Roenick on his role on the penalty kill. You see him checking in with his coaches on their thoughts on the upcoming match up, even saying that he throws a bad idea out occasionally get a reaction.
Of course, most fans on LetsGoKings.com think they have all of the answers on how the team should play, and Murray even looks at those, saying, "Often [the fans on the web] are quite critical of the coach, which is normal in this business if you lose a game. There's a lot of very perceptive people and some of them have great ideas."
As the scene shifts to Staples Center, Murray does TV interviews with Canadian TV before more individual meetings with players, coaches and a talk with the team. Sure, we know this happens every game but this is a chance to see what is said and how it is said.
As the game progresses and the Kings grab a 5-1 lead only to watch it melt away in the final period, you get a look at how he barks at the guys on the bench, giving recommendations on offensive positioning, cautions on defensive coverage and doing a little cheerleading on the side. After the Kings nearly blow the four-goal lead, but hang on in the final seconds for the victory, his message in the after game address to the players is interesting also.
For Kings fans starved for more information on their team, "Kings Insider" is just the ticket for seeing how things work behind the scenes on the LA Kings!
