The Grandmaster - first look review | Film | The Guardian

The rewards, however, are considerable: the discipline of the genre seems to have channelled Wong's flair for image-making away from the self-involved blind alleys his last few films have taken him up. The Grandmaster is something pretty special.

    The Thieves Blu-ray Review

A deftly handled, sleek, big budget heist film from South Korea, this one rivals anything Hollywood can push out and then some. It has action, comedy, special effects, fantastic gunplay, a love story, gorgeous locales, and beautiful women in catsuits – what’s to complain about?
Out today. All star cast. High hopes for this one.

Full Trailer For Takashi Miike's Police Thriller, Wara No Tate - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

It feels like years since I've seen a new Miike movie, even though he keeps pumping them out and that makes me sad.

Well Go USA Engaging in a Game of Deadball | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

    Synopsis:
Baseball prodigy Jubeh Yakyu (Tak Sakaguchi) is the most feared and dangerous juvenile delinquent in all of Japan. After accidentally causing the death of his father with a super-powered, deadly fireball pitch, Jubeh swore off baseball and became a criminal and now, at 17, has been sent to the Pterodactyl Juvenile Reformatory for hardened criminals. Headmistress Ishihara, the granddaughter of a World War II Nazi collaborator, runs the institution with an iron fist and the enthusiastic help of her sadistic assistant, Ilsa. After arriving at the hellhole, Jubeh soon learns from governor Mifune that his long-lost, younger brother Musashi had also done time there after a murder spree, but had since died mysteriously. Despite having sworn never to play baseball again, Jubeh is presented with an ultimatum by governor Mifune: join the reformatory team, The Gauntlets, in the national tournament for juvenile inmates, or witness the death of his innocent cellmate Four Eyes (Mari Hoshino). With the knowledge that the death of his brother is somehow connected to the team, Jubeh agrees, and Gauntlet training begins. Their first opponents: the sexy but deadly "psycho butcher girls" of the St. Black Dahlia High School, a team of literal man-killers. And so the splatterific baseball tournament begins, but Jubeh soon learns that he is not only fighting to win the game, but also to save his own life!

i've been thinking to hunt for the Zatoichi films. I have only one of the original Shintaro Katsu films, #10 Zatoichi's Revenge and the Beat Takeshi recent version but really want to get the rest of the movie versions starring Katsu before I get the TV series.

Well worth watching, if you can find them. I keep hoping someone will get around to putting them out on Blu-ray since the DVDs are almost all out of print. :(

Yup. I was lucky enough to get the boxset of the first 5 (?) and the set of the 8 (?) later ones back when they were still in print, but I'm still missing all the middle ones. ****ing blows.

Oh, look! The Weinstein Company bought the rights to a well received Asian film, let it sit on shelf for two years and are now releasing an edited version! Who would have guessed?!
