'Fruitvale' Takes Grand Jury & Audience Award Prizes At Sundance Film Festival | The Playlist
Not often you see one film win both.
Led by a much talked about lead performance by "Chronicle" star Michael B. Jordan, the film tells the story of the hours leading up to New Year's Day in 2009, when the 22-year-old Oscar Grant was pulled off a rowdy BART train at the Fruitvale station and was shot in the back, dying from his wounds. However, cell phone footage captured the entire event, leading to the sentencing of Officer Mehserle to two years in prison. With these two prizes, you might as well put this on the Oscar contender list for next fall.
Norah Jones To Perform Nominated Song From 'Ted' At Oscars, Tribute To Movie Musicals Planned | The Playlist
The Daily Mail are reporting that the Oscars are planning a tribute to musicals, and that the sequence could potentially get the likes of Meryl Streep, John Travolta and Catherine Zeta-Jones involved, as well as the majority of the “Les Miserables” cast, including Samantha Barks, Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried.
Of the films nominated for Best Picture, I've so far seen:
Argo
Django Unchained
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Of those, I enjoyed Django Unchained the most, but see Argo as the one most likely to win Oscar.
Still need to see:
Amour
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln

I really hope Lincoln doesn't win anything. That movie SUCKED!
Starting to make a big push for Naomi Watts...
Saw Amour, Argo, Django, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, and Les Mis this weekend. My guess is that Les Mis will win the big one with Argo the most likely upset. Thought Jessica Chastain was nice in ZDT but not sure why she got a nom. STILL have zero idea how Leo didn't get a nom. Thought Amour was tedious and like a documentary about watching someone die. Not sure why he got a directing nod but Affleck/Bigelow/Tarantino didn't. Academy patting itself on the back?
...and there's the rub on Amour for me. I mean, I get it. It was sad and you can relate to the situation, but...that was it. I didn't get attached to either of the two mains, there were shots that just lingered for the sake of lingering, and the ending was pretty much what you'd figure.
