    Default All Things:Coen Brothers

Apologies to Adgy...this is long overdue.

New Coen Brothers Movie Has A Title!
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

As previously discussed, the new Coen Brothers film will be diving into the 1960s folk music scene. Now it has a title, according to Variety: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS. The film will not be a biopic, as Llewyn Davis seems to be a fictional character, but will draw heavily on the New York music scene. i'm sure Dave van Ronk will still very much be in the finished work - perhaps Davis will be an amalgam of people from the time.

Scott Rudin will be producing, and as he's produced NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and TRUE GRIT for the brothers, I'm sure the film is in good hands. The script will be a Coen Brothers original, and Robert Graf will be executive producer. No domestic distributor has been announced yet, but Studio Canal has the international rights.

The Coen Brothers Enter Television With Hourlong Comedy At Fox From Imagine TV – Deadline.com

In the highest-profile migration of feature talent to television so far this development season, Oscar-winning filmmakers Ethan Coen and Joel Coen are set to executive produce an hourlong single-camera comedy for Fox, which the two co-created with another feature writer, Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids). The project, titled HarveKarbo, has received a script commitment with significant penalty from Fox.

It hails from Imagine TV, whose principal Brian Grazer is credited with luring the Coen brothers to television. (Ethan and Joel Coen did their 2003 feature Intolerable Cruelty with Imagine). HarveKarbo, which will be written by Johnston, features the type of quirky, offbeat characters that have become a staple of the Coen brothers’ movies.

It follows the title character — an ill-tempered LA private investigator whose cases frequently involve the depraved doings of the Hollywood elite — and his deadbeat friends in Los Angeles’ El Segundo. Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, Johnston, Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producing for Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV.

Oscar Isaac Scores The Lead In The Coen Brothers Folk Music Movie ‘Inside Llewyn Davis

With the Coen Brothers going the indie route for their upcoming “Inside Llewyn Davis,” they aren’t beholden to studios or anybody else and can damn well cast whoever they want, and Deadline reports they’ve selected Isaac to lead their film. Though plot details are under lock and key, the film will be loosely based on the life of Dave van Ronk, an American folk singer who presided over the Greenwich Village scene in the 1960s, which give birth to a new wave of artists that included Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Joni Mitchell. For Isaac, it won’t be anything new to sing in a film. In fact, in the upcoming “Ten Year” which we caught at TIFF, he not only plays a musician, but he writes and sings a key song in the movie.

Carey Mulligan Lands Coens’ ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’, Enters Talks for Untitled Spike Jonze Project | /Film

Mulligan is set to play the female lead in Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coens’ Scott Rudin-produced story about a folk musician in ’60s Greenwich Village. The project reunites her with Drive co-star Oscar Isaac, who was just cast as the title character. Details on her character are scarce, but considering the subject matter it seems possible she’ll get a chance to show off the vocal talents she recently demonstrated in Shame. Mulligan will begin work on Inside Llewyn Davis in February, after she wraps The Great Gatsby.
Man, this chick is in everything.

John Goodman Reteams With The Coens Again For ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ > The Playlist

With Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan on board, and an offer out to Justin Timberlake (and if he’s smart, he’ll take it), Showbiz 411 reports that Goodman is joining the forthcoming “Inside Llewyn Davis.” For the ‘O Brother’ actor it’s a return to musical territory with the directors, with movie loosely based on the life of Dave van Ronk, an American folk singer who presided over the ‘60s Greenwich Village scene, that included people you might have heard of like Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Joni Mitchell.

Of course, actual details are being kept close to the vest for now, so no word on what his role (or anybody else’s) is will be in the story described thus far as centering on a “struggling folk musician born and bred in Queens who, despite being a talented singer and guitarist, just can’t seem to make ends meet playing music.” Too bad “X Factor” wasn’t around back then.

The film is gearing up to lens in New York City in February.

Serralles gets 'Inside Llewyn Davis' - Entertainment News, EXCLUSIVE, Media - Variety

Stage veteran Jeanine Serralles, who previously appeared in James Gray's "Two Lovers" and Julie Taymor's "Across the Universe," has joined the cast of Joel and Ethan Coen's folk music pic "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Set amid the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, story follows a protagonist loosely based on singer Dave Van Ronk, a friend of Bob Dylan's, and other famous musicians.

Oscar Isaac ("Drive," "Sucker Punch") stars as the title character, a struggling musician from Queens who, despite being a talented singer and guitarist, can't make ends meet.

Justin Timberlake co-stars as another folk musician, while his wife will be played by Carey Mulligan, who shows off her vocal chops singing "New York, New York" in Steve McQueen's "Shame."

John Goodman is set to play a jazz musician who takes a road trip with the protag, while "Amadeus" star F. Murray Abraham is circling the role of Bud Grossman, a legendary manager. Abraham previously starred in Ethan Coen's off-Broadway show "Almost an Evening."

Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Cameron Diaz And A Lion Feature In First Posters For 'Gambit' | The Playlist

Years ago, as a paycheck assignment gig, the duo wrote a remake of the 1966 Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine caper flick "Gambit," and after years in development hell, the film finally made it into production in 2011, with Michael Hoffman ("The Last Station") at the helm, and Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz and Alan Rickman in central roles. And Orange have just unveiled a pair of character posters for the film, focusing on Firth and Rickman's characters, as well as a lion who will presumably figure into the plot.
