Review: David Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis' Is Both An Excellent Adaptation & A Rich, Complex Character Study | The Playlist
"Cosmopolis," an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s typically provocative novel of the same name, is the first feature film since 1999's "eXistenZ" that filmmaker David Cronenberg has directed and scripted. This in part explains why "Cosmopolis" is such a triumph: it’s both an exceptional adaptation and a remarkable work unto itself.
Sorry Cronenbergers, but ExistenZ is one of the worst movies I have ever tried to watch. They shouldn't EVER mention that movie in a favorable review.
Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis: Movieline Review - Movieline
Easier to admire than to love, David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis is an amplified, feverish vision of the one percent as scarcely human — not because of any innate maliciousness, but because they're so removed from the lives of the masses. They're like children who've already won a video game and now play carelessly, without any need to observe the rules.
Cosmopolis presents a world of vivid and sometimes nightmarish imagery outside those tinted windows, and finds something elegiac and terrible in the detached way its characters process what they see. As Morton's character says as she gazes at a protester who's set himself on fire outside the limo: "It's not original -- it's an appropriation."
David Cronenberg Sees Superhero Movies as “Mostly Boring;” Can Superhero Films Ever Mature As Horror Once Did? | /Film
Anybody who works in the studio system has got 20 studio people sitting on his head at every moment, and they have no respect, and there’s no…it doesn’t matter how successful you’ve been. And obviously Nolan has been very successful. He’s got a lot of power, relatively speaking. But he doesn’t really have power. [Q: So that's a no.] I would say that’s a no, you know. And the problem is you gotta… as I say, you can do some interesting, maybe unexpected things. And certainly, I’ve made the horror films and people say, “Can you make a horror film also an art film?” And I would say, “Yeah, I think you can.” But a superhero movie, by definition, you know, it’s comic book. It’s for kids. It’s adolescent in its core. That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying, you know, “Dark Knight Rises” is, you know, supreme cinema art,” I don’t think they know what the ****** they’re talking about.
Isn't ExistenZ that pill that improves performance? mhihi:
I like ExistenZ, but wouldn't blame anyone for not liking it. For that matter, I wouldn't blame anybody for not liking a Dangerous Method either. :O
I think Eastern Promises was his last all around good film.
