Ken Burns documentary 'Prohibition' will debut on iPad and iPhone | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog
Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns's latest project, Prohibition, is set to debut on the iPhone and iPad on September 23 via the PBS iOS app. The first episode will debut on iOS devices, but the three-part series won't be shown on the PBS TV channel or streamed on its site until October 2-4.

There have been plenty of combat documentaries over the last 10 years, but photojournalist Danfung Dennis’ “Hell and Back Again” adopts an original conceit. Dennis follows Marine Sgt. Nathan Harris, a gruff 25-year-old who was stationed in Afghanistan, during two seminal moments in his life. During an assault on a Taliban stronghold, Harris received a bullet wound in his rear that prematurely sent him home. Back in North Carolina with his wife, temporarily unable to walk and unsure of his military future, Harris drifts through his mundane life dealing with echoes of the past. Rather than letting his subject attempt to explain the trauma, Dennis shows it, repeatedly cutting between the two periods. The events speak for themselves.

At a breezy 76 minutes, the film is extremely economical: both entertaining and emotional. It’s been charming festival crowds since it premiered at Sundance earlier this year and took home a Special Jury Prize. Even if Elmo was a little after your time, the doc is sure to wring a few tears out of nostalgia prone adults with its behind-the-scenes look at a show that everybody under 50 has grown up with. The only real disappointment is wondering why Jim Henson hasn’t gotten a doc of his own this good. [B]
