    Default All Things:DRAMA

BEASTS OF NO NATION Image: Idris Elba Is a Warlord

Focus Features has unveiled the first Beasts of No Nation image from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming child soldier drama. Fukunaga also wrote the pic, which is based on author Uzodinma Iweala’s novel of the same name and revolves around a young boy who is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters when a civil war erupts in his West African country. Idris Elba, who is also a producer on the film, plays the army’s terrifying commander, and judging by this first-look image he appears to be rather imposing. Though many may just know Fukunaga as the director of all eight True Detective episodes, his past two features, Jane Eyre and Sin Nombre, have been excellent, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing his passion project Beasts of No Nation realized on the big screen.

Exclusive: New Pics From John Michael McDonagh’s ‘Calvary’ Starring Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd & Kelly Reilly | The Playlist

There are few directors who could find comedy in the premise of a priest who has been mysteriously told by an unidentified man that he'll be killed. But then perhaps you're not familiar with John Michael McDonagh, who put himself on the cinematic map with outrageous "The Guard," and returns with "Calvary." And today we have a batch of exclusive pics from the film.

A terrific cast has been brought together for this one, with Brendan Gleeson, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Isaach de Bankolé and Chris O'Dowd among the ensemble, in the tale of the man of the cloth, who tries to continue with this churchly responsibilities, even with the looming threat of death. It's one we highly recommend with our critic out of Sundance calling the film "an inventive whodunit in reverse," but if you can't take his word, perhaps the Ecumenical Jury prize from the Berlin Film Festival will sway you.

The somber, resigned mood of the picture is also expressively captured by the photography of Larry Smith and in Patrick Cassidy’s sonorously elegiac score. An inventive whodunit in reverse, “Calvary” may not be for all audiences, with its pitch-black heart and sober existentialism not exactly commercial stuff, but its unwavering commitment to the intelligent thorniness of its themes, and the masterful control McDonagh exerts over the shifts in tone are worth cherishing, bringing it soaring close to something divine. Saw the trailer for this the other day. It looks great.

    Review: Calvary | Film Comment

If The Guard is an attempt at a wry, re-imagined Western, Calvary is almost a modern giallo, alive with emphatic religious imagery, beautiful vibrant colours, rapturous locations, and ominous figures obscuring the identity of a would-be killer. The chief difference between Calvary and What Have You Done To Solange? is that no blood is shed until the final reel. McDonagh turns Lavelle’s calm Irish town into a wriggling den of thieves—and world-class thieves at that. Besides Walsh, the cast is rounded out by Kelly Reilly, Chris O’Dowd, Aiden Gillen, Dylan Moran, Isaach de Bankolé, and Gleeson’s son Domhnall.
Have I ever told you how much I love Brendan Gleeson? Because, man, I do.

First Look: Gael García Bernal In Jon Stewart's Directori | The Playlist

Based on the memoir "Then They Came For Me," the movie tells the true story of Iranian/Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari, played by Gael García Bernal, who was arrested during the 2009 Iranian election protests, spent 118 days in jail and was forced to confess to a number of crimes. “It may not be what people expect from me; it’s not a comedy,” Stewart told EW. “I hope people view it for what it is—a love letter to expression and the importance of it. It’s everything.”

    "Rosewater" opens on November 7th.
