CK's comedy has moved squarely into the middle-aged everyman. Some of its funny, some of it isn't - life at this age (I'm turning 40 in November) has more of its share of those moments where you realize just how different things are than they were at 30 or even 35. Not all of it is comical, and a lot of those moments of self-realization are actually like getting your soul's nuts stepped on.

This year he has gone away from looking only for the comedy in those situations and is playing it in a more ballsy, open manner. That he couldn't find Liz isn't the story - that Sevigny had an orgasm isn't the story. The kookiness of those characters is a reflection on the way he relates to women as he gets older. He can't understand them - he neer could, has less and less energy to put towards women, and is finding himself more prone to settle for those desperate experiences that he would have walked right past when he was younger and had more options. It's all metaphor for leaving youth and settling into middle age.

Nobody tells you just how crappy it is to get to this age. His kids being on the show more now is used to show that anchor to responsibility that you just don't have when you are younger, or that you try and escape from in your mid 30's. He's taking hummers from old ladies, willing to accept a freaking weirdo, all just to grasp some last hold on the things of his youth.

This season - his kids, his weight, his motorcycle, the strange women - it's all about the last stages of the fight before you throw in the towel, realizing that aging is inevitable. It's agonizing and depressing at times, but it is very real, and you just don't see anything like this in episodic television. I'm thrilled that he is doing what he wants to do - he writes, directs and edits his own show, and I am completely on board with what he is doing. It's not in as comedic a light as it was before, but the moments this year are just so recognizable, even if they are absurd by design. I don't see it as an homage to French New Wave Cinema as much as a natural progression of the character he has been working on over the last decade. And I don't think it is going to end all that well either.
Awesome breakdown of this past season. Totally spot on.

Don't overlook the sexual confusion he explored in the Miami episode. That episode as a whole was ****ing bold as ****. The nuts on this guy to take his character THERE. Amazing stuff.

'Louie' is not and was never a show about comedy. He's repeatedly showcased and reveled in the dramatic side of life. Yes, Louie is a comic and yes he does showcase his routine throughout but the Louie character is about as morose and sardonic as any lead character in TV history. His natural state is depressed. It's through this prism of abjection that the funniest parts of his life shine through.

Let's also not forget that 'Louie' has always been this absurdist satire from the onset. Remember in the pilot episode when his date ditches him and flies away in an awaiting helicopter? Take nothing from the show at face value, ever.

'American Horror Story Asylum' will scare the crazy out of you, some thoughts - Monsters and Critics

The tone, premise and pacing make this series one to NEVER let kids watch, or anyone with sensitivity issues. Let me repeat: This is NOT a family TV viewing event. This show is "in your face" sexuality, horror and psychologically disturbing moments all woven at the same time.

*Casting note: Ian McShane will be part of the cast according to Ryan Murphy who shared on Twitter that he will "tussle" with Jessica Lange's Sister Jude
It really sounds like they are going all out this season, and the addition of McShane just makes this even MORE cool. Walking Dead...meh, ok...this is the premiere I am really looking forward to.

[TV] 5 Reasons Why “American Horror Story: Asylum” ROCKS (Hint: Jessica Lange!) | | Bloody DisgustingBloody Disgusting

Cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this bat**** crazy show last night. Pinheads, bare bottomed nuns begging for canings, oldschool closeted lesbianism, some sort of speculum like alien probing, greasers, 1950's biracial couples...and the ****o from Maroon 5 with an arm off. And...they kept the theme song while adding even more ****ed up visuals to the title sequence.

A Look Ahead on American Horror Story: Asylum; Dylan McDermott Returns! | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

Great news. Always like DMD and some of his best work was on season 1. Love the format of this show and the return of the same actors in different roles. It really is some of the most creative tv going on these days. Hats off to Fx. Serious business.

I love this goddam show. The opening couple scene probably could have been handled better without bringing some cheap sex in. I mean, considering how tawdry the rest of the show was, that opening could have been more effective with them just being a couple of amateur ghost hunters. Aside from that, dayyyyyuuuuummmm! Sarah Paulson has always been a terrific character actress and I'm really happy to see her more involved this year.

Are they bringing Alexandra Breckenridge back, too?
