The best part of this was the quiet between the fight. Poor Pyp and brave Grenn...damnit I didn't want them to die. Neil Marshall did another outstanding job. I didn't like having to grudgingly respect Ser Aliser...

    This.^^

I was kind of "meh" after it ended. What makes the show for me is the dialogue. Battles and fighting are a dime a dozen these days. Incredible Dialogue, not so much...

I was more excited to see next week’s season wrap-up preview.

But there was great dialogue. Every scene Sam was in. The scene with Maester Aemon. Grenn's last stand. I think a lot of folks are being overly critical. A lot of the reviews I have read are saying who cares about the Wall, the Black Watch, Jon Snow, etc. Well, I do. It's all important. And are you honestly going to tell me that you didn't think the two scenes Dexter posted up a little higher weren't terrific? Man, underwhelmed...you guys are a tough audience. Just because it was Tyrion free everyone is a critic.

Yeah. Gonna want to watch this one East Coast style and live, and if you have to dvr, make sure you don't clip the end.

Overall I thought it was exciting all the way through and had some real cool moments but one issue I had is that I didn't feel they did a good enough job portraying the immensity of the wildling army. Just seemed like a couple dozen guys climbing a 700 foot ice wall and hoping for the best, it never looked like they stood a chance really.

Jon addressed that at the end saying 'they tested our defenses and almost took the castle. Mance has more giants and mammoths etc.' It was almost as if Mance conceded the battle in favor of the war. The night's watch was fairly decimated and most of their 'surprises' were exposed. They have ZERO chance of withstanding another attack.

Yeah. I thought it was a very solid episode. It was just different from what we're used to in the show is all. I was really impressed with the shot that started when Snow showed up below and seeing the camera track around the entire castle to end up back on him. The choreography needed for that set piece was really top notch.

The episode DID feel more like a harbinger of things to come more than anything else though and that may be why people felt a little meh about it. We know this was just a start so, with all the time devoted to it, it just felt like some filler. Quality filler, but filler all the same.

Yeah I understood that it was about testing the defenses but to tag that on after the battle was done doesn't make me go back in time and feel differently about the battle I already experienced. Do you know what I mean? For some reason I'm having a hard time putting this into words... but I spent an hour watching a battle where one side was in almost complete control the whole time and at the end of the hour they say that this was only a recon group. Okay, yeah I get it, it was very obvious from the start that it wasn't the full force of a hundred thousand wildlings, but make me experience that while I watch the episode, don't show a one-sided beating followed by "oh if they do this again we're screwed because of that huge wildling army hidden in those trees over there". Scare me, make me feel like the crows beat the odds THEN tell me they haven't accomplished squat.

Oh well, I still enjoyed the episode very much.

All good points in a good argument, maybe I was just a little more forgiving. I just kept thinking about what they accomplished within the confines of the budget and judged it solely on that. If you judge it by having read the books, I think that leads to the disappointment. For me, the hardest thing to suspend my book knowledge of was the burro trip up to the Aerie. The way that is described I actually got anxiety and vertigo. They didn't even try to accomplish that on the show, with good reason. For some reason I didn't experience that last night and was able to appreciate what they DID show as opposed to what I was expecting. All perspective really.

Any chance of a longer than 60 minute episode for the finale to fit all the potential storylines in?
